OWJ does Myrtle Beach

First off, get your heads out of the gutter...OWJ2 and I are heading down for some fun in the sun (with sunscreen, Jorr) next weekend. We will be staying in N. Myrtle in fabulous accommodations thanks to our sweet iceeu2.

We loove to eat--suggestions? We are not picky eaters and are as comfortable in the local dive as we are with fine dining, just expect yummy. I'll have to shop and OWJ2 will have to reluctantly go along w/that :D And what about a public driving range so OWJ2 can hit some golf balls?

And Gotravel, beachdweller and others--whatcha up to Fri-Tues? Wanna meet us for a beer or some other tasty adult beverage?

IamBooth Jun 24th, 2006 06:05 AM

Where to eat? Creek Ratz of course!

http://www.creekratz.com/

OneWanderingJew Jun 24th, 2006 06:21 AM

I should mention we've never been to MB so we're pretty clueless (more than usual. hehe)

motherdaughter Jun 24th, 2006 06:43 AM

Most South Carolinians go to Calabash (NC, not the Calabash style restaurants in SC) or Murrells Inlet (south of Myrtle Beach) to eat. Best seafood restaurants. Have fun! Get in the mood for some sweet tea and fried seafood, ad you'll enjoy it.

LoveItaly Jun 24th, 2006 06:57 AM

That is great news OWJ!! I know you both will have a wonderful time..and a well deserved one.

starrsville Jun 24th, 2006 07:09 AM

Dang! I just got back this week from MB. Sorry I missed you on the sunny coast! GoT suggested Creek Ratz in Murrells Inlet and it was casual and yummy. Good outlet malls in MB - although I usually refrain. I always like Bonefish - although it's a small CHAIN (boo, hiss!) Definitely yummy!
Have a great time. Good talking to you and sorry you can't make the GTG today! Love ya, starrsville.

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 08:52 AM

OWJ...while Creek Ratz may be good, it is definitely too far from where you are staying to just meander on down to Murrell's Inlet for the short period of time you will be there.

I asked about Benny Rappa's for you and beach dweller said for sure it is good....maybe he will see this and give you a really good heads up since he knows where it is you are staying.

((r))i'2

People, how about giving her more recs in the NMB, MB, Calabash area.

Our fav Calabash place is The Seafood Hut. Out on Hwy. 9, we like Stevens and then on farther than that we like Horry's. We had great apps and adult beverages at Liberty at Broadway at the Beach with a few fodorites and I remember beach dweller's wife telling me that the restaurant at The Bass Pro Shop is good. I have always wanted to try The Parson's Table in Little River but never have. The kids have been to Thoroughbred's for fine dining and loved it. There's also some good looking places out at Barefoot Landing. Hey, I know....you might want to do the House of Blues Sunday Brunch or just their morning breakfast buffet.

Good day!

starrsville Jun 24th, 2006 12:38 PM

Hey i2, missed you at the GTG.

I still agree with IamBooth that the Creek Ratz is a good choice. I was at the edge of MB and NMB this week and enjoyed the drive. For me it was only 24 miles and about 30 minutes. If you take the bypass around MB you can be there in just a flash. The food was good. The location was wonderful - water view and I think OWJ and OWJ2 would enjoy walking the elevated boardwalk along the marsh and water. As far as being a "drive" from MB, it took me as long to get there as it would take OWJ to drive to Bahama Breeze at the mall at home. Well worth it to me - but I like driving around a new destination. Of course, the main reason I went there was because GoT told me to. :-)

The place at Bass is the Islamorada Fish Company and I love the one in Islamorada. I opted not to go to the one in MB since it was inland. I drove down to Islamorada from Miami in March when I was working there and had a sunset dinner overlooking the water. Hmmmm... there's a theme here. It was warm enough to snorkel at Pennekamp that day, but I had to excuse myself after ordering 'cause it was so chilly as the sun set to buy a gorgeous cardigan just outside the doors of Zane Grey's. What a trial. Shopping and eating in a 50 foot radius! :-)

I almost ate at Bonefish - small chain, but I just love their seafood and martinis. As it turned out, I opted for the K&W 'cause I was more in the mood for comfort food.

The last time I was there I ate at a good Japanese restaurant, but am not sure you are in the mood for that. And, once per trip I usually get Thai take-out - but it's not better than the one in OWJ's hometown.

Let me see if I can think of a really great place in MB and I'll post if I do.

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 01:29 PM

NMB great dives-Hoskins
The Club House

LoveItaly Jun 24th, 2006 01:41 PM

Hi there iceeu2, just a personal thank you from me to you for helping the OWJ's to have a wonderful trip to MB!! They are a special couple and it makes me so happy they will have this get-a-way! Best regards.

cmcfong Jun 24th, 2006 01:53 PM

Have a great trip, OWJ. I hope OWJ2's back won't be a concern and you will have loads of fun!

GoTravel Jun 24th, 2006 02:00 PM

Hi OWJ!

I do agree Murrells Inlet is a wonderful place to eat and sit out on the water. At night, tiki torches abound the mile long marshwalk with live bands everywhere.

Good food:

Bovines
Divine Fish House
Creek Ratz

Great drinks:

All of the above plus
Spuds
Drunken Jacks
Dead Dog

I'd love to meet for a drink but I'll be in TORTOLA!!! Here I come BVIs!

Check out the new driving range at Barefoot Golf & Resort. The new clubhouse/proshop/restaurants aren't open yet but the range is impressive. Also, the BF courses are ranked nationally in the top 100.

I've been eating at The Calabash Seafood Hut since I was a kid and they do have the best fried shrimp I've ever eaten in a restaurant!

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 02:55 PM

LoveItaly, you have to be the nicest, kindest, sweetest internet non-ax murderer I have never met. I read your posts all of the time and if you are just one little inkling of the way you write, then you are just outstanding!!

We just need that cutie couple to go to the beach and RELAX, don't we?

((r))

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 02:56 PM

And, if y'all are gonna keep talking about Creek Ratz, I guess I'm just gonna have to try it myself if we ever get to go back down!

I asked on another thread and beachdweller answered, but what does anyone else think of Benny Rappa's in NMB? She can just skip hop to it.

i'2

GoTravel Jun 24th, 2006 02:58 PM

I've never eaten there. Where is BRs?

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 03:07 PM

On Hwy 17 in NMB at the corner of 15th Avenue South. Almost across the street from The Outrigger and I think maybe Possum Trot Golf Course or maybe Beechwood Golf. It's the Crescent Beach area..only on the highway!!!!

Maybe, I should join the biggest loser...One glass of pinot noir and I'm typing silly!

Where is Totola?

LoveItaly Jun 24th, 2006 03:19 PM

Oh iceuu2, it is our OWJ's that are soooo wonderful..and I truly mean that. I can't believe that I haven't known them "forever". OWJ has been such a love, such a good friend, such a comfort when I have needed it.

And you do know about when I flew from Sacramento to Atlanta, arriving around 9:30pm (the plane was late) and the two OWJ's were there at the baggage area waiting for me. The first time I have ever met them. After my most beautiful week there (including OWJ and I going to beautiful Charleston) I had friends ask "you got in car at night, in the dark, with strangers and drove through Atlanta without knowing who you were with or where you were going?" YIKES!!!

Yes, Iseeu2, I sure did. And I knew that I was with the most loving and adorable couple one could ever be with.

Oh shush OWJ..you are so pretty when you blush, lol!!

So all of you Fodorites, keep giving the OWJ's suggestions for their vacation. I sure know that GoTravel's report regarding Charleston sure added to OWJ's and my time in that beautiful city.

seetheworld Jun 24th, 2006 03:25 PM

OWJ, we've been to MB numerous times, but I am clueless as to where to send you. It was before I took notes on my trips, lol.

I just wanted to wish you both a fabulous trip!

I do remember going to some pottery/basket outlet -- it was HUGE. Can't remember the name though. And I do think it was about 30 minutes away.

Anyway, have fun! :D

GoTravel Jun 24th, 2006 03:29 PM

Totola=British Virgin Islands!

Yea for me!

I'm going with my best girlfriend under the guise of a friend's wedding.

So far, the groom's boat almost sank off Kiawah and the bride has been deported. They have moved to Tortola and he is running his businesses from there and here.

I'm going because this wedding is the apocolypse and I want a front row seat!

I. Need. This.

OWJ and OWJ2 will have a fabulous time!

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 03:30 PM

seetheworld, you probably went to Waccamaw which is now defunct.

But, they are talking of building a Hard Rock Amusement Park in that area.

LI, when the real icee falls instantly in love with someone then you know they are beyond grand. He liked them from the get go! And, he ain't easy to impress. I just hope they like staying in a fishing shack!

seetheworld Jun 24th, 2006 03:32 PM

THAT'S (WAS) IT! Waccamaw - I used to drag Mr. STW there. He'll be happy to hear it's gone, lol. ;)

starrsville Jun 24th, 2006 03:54 PM

Myrtle Beach has changed alot since the Waccamaw days. Mr. STW can still wait for you as you shop at the outlet center - Ann Taylor, Kenneth Cole, Nautica, Tommy Hilfinger, Coach, Old Navy, etc. :-) And of course, BassPro is across the street so to speak. That part of MB used to "country". I realized my new chain hotel is next to a Par3 course I played 16 years ago - and there was nothing much out there.

Murrells Inlet was a delight. I'm sure there are good restaurants in MB, but nothing I know of with the "atmosphere" of the Murrell's Inlet area. Great advice from GoT. I'm looking forward to trying all the recommendations of GoT and beachdweller, etc and sample as many good, scenic SC coastal restaurants as possible. Divine Fish is next!

Safe travels and have fun in BVI, GoT. The USVI are some of my favorites.

seetheworld Jun 24th, 2006 04:01 PM

starrsville, Nothing stays the same for very long. :(

Pre-kids we used to stay at the Teakwood with our best friend. We had a blast -- drinking and playing Monopoly until all hours of the morning.

Post-kids we'd stay at the condos.

We would always drive. That part I did not enjoy.

OneWanderingJew Jun 24th, 2006 04:17 PM

Ooooh jeez, people--we deserve none of your compliments, but thank you! We're just normal people (well, if crazy is normal...) Anyway, thanks for all the advice and the swelled heads. We can't wait to leave and visit i2's love shack--oops I mean beach shack!

Atmosphere, beverages and good food make for a perfect evening so we may have to venture to Murrell's Inlet! You provided us with so many suggestions--how will we ever narrow them down. OWJ2's boss may get mad if we don't come back and cut him off from that paycheck I like spending :)

I'm so sad I'm not going to be able to meet up with you GoT. You are one of the funniest people on this bb and I was hoping to be able to hang out together. Hope the apocolypse is everything you imagine it to be!

Starrs-baby! We live close enough that we will have to hook up for lunch one day!

LoveItaly--What can I say? Thanks. (BTW, we never got to have the conf. call we were hoping to have--it's back to the drawing board on the adoption front :( )

OneWanderingJew Jun 24th, 2006 04:21 PM

Oh, and one more shout out to my pal cmcfong--Hi!! OWJ2's back is doing so, soo much better. He did some yardwork last weekend and felt good. I think he's pretty much back to normal.

(One more thing, Starrsville--the mere mention of Islamorada makes me weep. I spent more than a few weekends there or in other parts of the Keys back when I was still living in FL.)

starrsville Jun 24th, 2006 04:26 PM

Well, then, try out the Islamorada Fish Company in MB. They have a good coconut shrimp and a very interesting smoked fish spread at Zane Grey's bar/restaurant at the Bass in I. with the IFC next door. It's pretty much what I order when I go there. And, if you are drinking they mix a MEAN bloody mary! I was more in a Southern comfort food mood that night though :-)

GoTravel Jun 24th, 2006 04:27 PM

Really great restaurants on the north end:

Rossis
Thoroughbreds
Chesnut Hill (fabulous Sunday Brunch)
Biminis (although it's gotten a bit campy of late)

iceeu2 Jun 24th, 2006 05:27 PM

Ok...

I say Benny Rappa's over Rossi's

Thoroughbred's-definitely

Chestnut Hill-it's been a long time ago

Bimini's-know the name, but don't have a clue where it is.

OneWanderingJew Jun 25th, 2006 08:23 AM

Grazie, my sweet i'2!

(BTW, my dh wants to know when you can come down our way--we'd love to have you guys over for a cookout or to take you out somewhere!)

iceeu2 Jun 25th, 2006 09:23 AM

OWJ....I have been accused of a lot of things, but never ever have I been accused of being sweet!

We'll make it that way before long. Life situations have been keeping us close to home lately.

Tiff Jun 25th, 2006 09:30 AM

My dear OWJ and OWJ2 ~

Mr. Tiff and I would like to extend a very hearty "have fun in the sun" to the both of you. You SO deserve it!

Oh what's that I hear... Soph says to "chase a stick on the beach for her and remember to take long naps!"

Love and "rrrrrufffff",
Tiff et al

Tiff Jun 25th, 2006 09:48 AM

p.s. iceeU2, you rock!

OneWanderingJew Jun 25th, 2006 12:47 PM

Tiff,
Tell that cutiepie Sophie that we will throw sticks and take long naps in her honor! OWJ2 has dog-dar so there won't be a dog w/in 5mi. that won't come up to us and expect a little loving.

We are very excited to get some R&R and beach time and will forever be grateful to the i'2s for making this happen! To paraphrase the immortal Gotravel, "We. So. Need. This."
OWJ and OWJ2

I'2--
You are sweet! And fun...and funny...and have a heart of gold!
us

beach_dweller Jun 26th, 2006 05:10 AM

Wow,

I don't think I have much to add to the great suggestions above! You can't go wrong with any of them. Here's a few more NMB/Little River/Calabash places I didn't see anyone else mention.

Sea Merchants House in NMB (on Hwy 17) for the baked grouper parmesan.

In Little River, Parson's Table is a good special occasion restaurant. And on the waterfront there's a really cool place called the Cockney Cheddar, they have great fish n chips, as well as a creative shrimp appetizer.

A little further up the road in Calabash is Cafe Latte. A very welcome change when you just. can't. eat. another. bite. of. FRIED. anything.

Best nearby happy hours, if you're interested in that sort of thing:

1. Liberty Steakhouse & Brewery at Broadway at the Beach.

2. Biminis on Lake Arrowhead Rd (turn left just past Thoroughbreds)

3. Liberty Taproom (sister restaurant to #1 above)

4. Islamorada Fish Co., great apps, including sushi (6-8 pieces) between $3 & $4.

Oh, also, we used to love Duffy Street Fish Shack - it seemed a little pricy for a dive, but the seafood baskets were awesome. Haven't been in ages (they serve wine in a plastic cup, and there are some things that Mrs. Beach Dweller just won't tolerate).

Have a great time!

P.S. We'd love to meet you for a drink somewhere, you're here this Friday through Tuesday? Maybe Sunday evening?

OneWanderingJew Jun 26th, 2006 05:25 AM

Hi Beachdweller--
Once more, thank you for all the choices you've offered us! I think you might be well be the welcoming committee of the MB area :)

We'd love to meet up with you on Sunday night--email me at onewanderingjew at homail dot com--and we'll get organized!

Thanks again,
OWJ

iceeu2 Jun 26th, 2006 07:38 AM

Once again....(I just love butting into the business of others!)....Benny Rappa's is a hop skip from the Freeze luvin shack!

Sorry guys, I just couldn't resist!!:D

beachdweller & OWJ..there's a Duffy's on Main Street in OD, but I'm with you on thinking it was overpriced. I drank coke the night we went...didn't figure they had wine to even put in a plastic cup!! However, they used to have a good happy hour for shrimp and oysters.

Now y'all need to go over to the pavillion at OD and watch some of the old-timers shag in the early afternoon. It's about a mile one way by beach walking. Or, if you can stay up later (and tolerate the smoke), Fat Harold's should be hopping with lots of people dancing and drinking beer!!

Y'all just keep posting if you want me to keep on buttin in yer bizness!!:-)

iceeu2 Jun 27th, 2006 02:41 PM

Not to worry OWJ and bd...I got your message loud and clear!!:D

OneWanderingJew Jun 28th, 2006 04:12 AM

We're not sending you a message, at least I'm not. Really! There's a diff btwn being a busybody and being helpful--you, my friend, are helpful! Thank you, thank you!

Budman Jun 28th, 2006 04:13 AM

She certainly is a helpful person. :-) ((b))

iceeu2 Jun 28th, 2006 05:09 AM

Thank you my Budman friend!! OWJ, I butted into the biznes of Bud and the Mrs. and saved them about a gazillion million dollars!! :D How's that for a friend?

Budman, when y'all headed back that way?
