Budman Jun 28th, 2006 05:13 AM

I'm looking at sometime in the last 2 weeks of September. My mouth is watering with the thought of cold beer and an oyster roast with you guys, Beach Dweller, and GoTravel along with anyone else in the area who's "game." I'm even willing to try fried pickles & twinkies. :-) ((b))

OneWanderingJew Jun 28th, 2006 05:25 AM

Budman--Fried pickles?! And you call yourself a good citizen of New Jersey?

Tsk, tsk
OWJ

SAnParis Jun 28th, 2006 05:27 AM

If you go north on 17 you'll run across The Parsons Table, it's right on the main drag (if you hit NC you've gone to far). It is located in Little River. It is a nice break from the fried seafood you'll be getting most places, not that there is anything wrong w/that.

OneWanderingJew Jun 28th, 2006 05:56 AM

Thanks, SAnParis! I *try* to avoid fried foods though sometimes a French fry or two or something else will jump in my mouth :D It will be nice to have somewhat healthier options so those fries have to work extra hard to make it past my lips and onto my hips!

kathleen Jun 28th, 2006 06:04 AM

QWJ,
Another suggestion. If you go south on highway 17 to the town of Murrell's Inlet, you'll find one of my favorite seafood restaurants--Oliver's Lodge. It's near the end of the run of restaurants, as you're heading south out of town.

Just a few miles further south you'll find Huntington Beach State Park, IMHO the best grand strand beach area. And just across the highway 17 is Brookgreen Gardens, a lovely outdoor figurative sculpture garden, if you're into art.

Together these three--beach, garden, and dinner would make a great day. Pack a picnic lunch for either the beach or the garden.

Enjoy your stay in the Myrtle Beach area.
Kathy

SAnParis Jun 28th, 2006 06:07 AM

I would probably make a reservation - www.parsonstable.com.

iceeu2 Jun 28th, 2006 06:52 AM

OWJ doesn't want that fried food cause she's gonna get her calories in some adult beverages, I bet!!:D

GoTravel Jun 28th, 2006 07:39 AM

I forgot about Oliver's Lodge! They were bought out by an old Murrells Inlet family a couple of years ago and have totally revamped and renovated the restaurant.

Excellent food with a beautiful view of the inlet.

OneWanderingJew Jun 28th, 2006 12:52 PM

sssh, icee--you'll have people thinking my name is Lushkowitz :D

I'm adding this info to all that I've saved, thanks to all of you! The only thing left to do is hit the road and make some decisions on what to eat (and drink, but don't tell anyone I'2)

One night OWJ2 requested we see the Braves minor league team play one night--he says they're at home this w/e. Is that convenient to NMB? Is there any reasonable way to go to a game and combine it w/one of the many restaurants recommended?

maryanne1 Jun 28th, 2006 01:23 PM

I live here at N Myrtle Beach. Yes, you can go to the Braves team game and find a place at Broadway at the Beach which is nearby to eat. Liberty Steak House was mentioned, but there are quite a few other places nearby. The easiest and quickest way to get to that area if you are at the North end Is go over the inland waterway Bridge and take the new Highway 31 and get off on Grissett until you get near Broadway. You will find the maps in the books given in stores around here. You have been given many good suggestions for places to eat. On main Street Ocean Drive there is the old Hoskins restaurant which is good home cooking. We have many of the chain restaurants on this end such as Bonefish which we like, Outback. K and W Cafeteria, etc. We like Tonys on this end for Italian food. Another favorite for seafood if you don't want to go as far as Calabash is the Marina Raw Bar off 17 down on the water. A fairly new restaurant is the Grill House near Leows where they have very good steaks.
You will enjoy our beach and Southern hospitality. We have grown so much here it is unbelievable for us natives.
Will be happy to give any other suggestions. have a good time and enjoy!

OneWanderingJew Jun 28th, 2006 01:57 PM

Thanks, Maryanne! Southern hospitality is pretty wonderful and that's why I choose to live in this part of the country. OWJ2 is going to be so excited to go to the game and I'm happy that I don't have to rely on a ballpark dog for dinner :)

starrsville Jun 28th, 2006 02:04 PM

maryjane recommended two of my favorites near my home-away-from-home in MB (just south of NMB). Bonefish and K&W Cafeteria are regular haunts. The Islamorada Fish Company (mentioned before) is not far away either. Based on GoT's recommendation I did try (and enjoy) the Sea Captain's House so if you find yourself in the area (right in MB) it was good. I'd prefer an oceanfront location over Broadway at the Beach, but that's just my preference. The she crab soup was as wonderful as GoT said it would be. Neat little story about how this little short house is still there in the midst of all the hotel and condo highrises.

starrsville Jun 28th, 2006 02:17 PM

Hubby's back probably won't tolerate it but I LOVE MB's Par 3 golf courses. I'm a horrible golfer - but have such a good time on the Par 3's. Toss in some clubs if y'all think you may be the least bit interested. There's a nice Par 3 behind Bonefish.

iceeu2 Jun 28th, 2006 02:32 PM

OWJ, lucky OWJ2! He's gets his way also! It's Robert Grissom parkway (instead of Grisset). I think there may be a map on the fridge. If not, like maryanne said, it's in the books.

maryanne, were you in SF when we got together down there in December? You gonna be around for the fried pickles and fried twinkies next time out?

cmcfong Jun 28th, 2006 05:23 PM

OWJ, I am so glad to see OWJ2's back is healed. I hope you have a wonderful time. I would just add a ditto to SAnParis' suggestion of Parson's Table. It is a nice change of pace from the more traditional beach treats. Enjoy yourselves!!!!

OneWanderingJew Jun 28th, 2006 05:38 PM

Icee--He gets his way every once in awhile. I don't spoil him very often or he'll expect too much--just looked what happened to me with all of his spoiling ;)

cmcfong--always great to hear from you! I must say, it's made a world of difference in his disposition now that his back feels good!My normally happy and easy-going guy was a lousy patient.

Starrs--I'll tell my dh about that course. I'm not sure he feels he's ready for a round of golf but he could use some time on the putting range.

Thanks, guys!! I can not wait to get down there, smell that salt water smell, hear the waves crashing on the beach, and feel the sand under my feet. The one thing I've missed most living in Atlanta is being able to go to the beach whenever I want!

iceeu2 Jun 30th, 2006 08:25 AM

Hi all...Just heard from OWJ & OWJ2 and they are safe and sound in Myrtle Beach.

Have to tell you all a little short story. At Christmas we were given a clock that on the hour says "Praise God". It's a very deep, almost scarey voice.

I got so tickled last night when I thought about it being at the beach shack. I started laughing and the real icee is like what is so funny.

I said, "Oh, no...we sent the Jewish kids to a house with a clock that talks and says.."Praise God".

Just had to share this. Don't know why it strikes my funny bone so, but it does!!!!

Plus, it feels good to laugh!

seetheworld Jun 30th, 2006 08:37 AM

Thanks for the laugh iceu2!!!! :D

I can just picture the expression on the faces of the OWJs!

starrsville Jun 30th, 2006 08:48 AM

Just wait until they walk past the Big Mouth Billy Bass!

LoveItaly Jun 30th, 2006 11:58 AM

Thanks for posting they arrived Iceeu2!

I heard from OWJ yesterday morning and she was so excited about this getaway. Like me she misses the ocean and beach.

Have a happy 4th of July weekend!!

maryanne1 Jun 30th, 2006 01:41 PM

I do know the highway is Grissom-don't know how that Grisset got in there. Travel that highway very often. It certainly helps us.
We expect a big weekend down here in NMB. The firworks will be exploding!!
No, I was not at the SF in Dec. Was trying hard at that time to get over a complete knee replacement.

starrsville Jul 5th, 2006 05:55 AM

OWJ, how was the vacation? Give us the scoop, especially on the food! :-)

OneWanderingJew Jul 5th, 2006 07:38 AM

Hey Starrs!
Gimme a break, I'm still on vacation mode :)

It was a GREAT little getaway! Accom-superb (THANK YOU i'2!!!!!!!!!!!), beach--wonderful....and meals yummy.

One night we went, on your rec, to Islamorada Fish Co. The food was good but the service was mediocre. We had a fantastic dinner at Devine Fish House (thanks GoTravel). We just loved Murrell's Inlet and the drive wasn't too bad from NMB. It was fun to walk around after dinner, have a beer and listen to the live music at the many restaurants along the marsh. I also loved looking at the boats and fantasizing that one day one would be mine!

We met up with beachdweller and Mrs. BD for happy hour at Liberty Tap Room on 17Bus. They are just the nicest, coolest people--we loved hanging out with them! (Hi guys!!) After we parted ways, OWJ2 and I headed over to B'way on the Beach, had dinner. Bway was waaay crowded. I think it would be fun to go back when it is a little calmer. We were in mellow moods and were not in the mood to deal w/so many people and after dinner we headed back to the beach house.

It was a fantabulous little getaway. I can't tell you how much we needed that! It really recharged my batteries--that said, the lazy, beach-loving girl that I am wants to back soon!!

GoTravel Jul 5th, 2006 07:41 AM

How wonderful! Glad you had a good time!

(Plan on returning for the oyster roast in September!)

OneWanderingJew Jul 5th, 2006 07:49 AM

Hi GoT!
How was BVI??

Come back in Sept??? Ok, if you twist my arm :D

OWJ

GoTravel Jul 5th, 2006 08:00 AM

They were completely fabulous!

Not only that, the groom gave me his house for the week of Christmas! AND, he gave our good friends his 48 foot catamaran his boat that week!

Woopee! Life is good!

Did y'all stay for the fourth and see the fireworks?

I just love Wahoos (the outside bar at Divine's) and the marshwalk.

LoveItaly Jul 5th, 2006 08:21 AM

Welcome home OWJ. I am so glad you two had a wonderful time. You have been in my thoughts. I hope you can just kick back for the rest of the week and keep that relaxed feeling!!

iceeu2 Jul 5th, 2006 08:31 AM

OWJ....the real icee did a real guffaw when I told him about the tarantula you saw!!

When is the September oyster roast?

And, if you all get a chance to go to the other place - for a good read, go to the US forum and read beachdweller's(lets cool one) account of Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand. It is fabulous and will make anyone want to go down to Myrtle and unwind.

OWJ, welcome home! My friend ran her 20th consecutive Peachtree Road Race in 80 mins and 56 secs. I am so proud of her.

beach_dweller Jul 6th, 2006 06:49 AM

OWJ AND OWJ2,

Sorry you had to leave--isn't it fun down here at the beach?

It was so great meeting both of you Sunday night. (Here's the scoop: the OWJs, my better half, and me met at Liberty Taproom for a few drinks. They are really cool people, as all fodorites I've met are. We had some things in common, like teaching, love of travel--duh, and ended up having a great conversation. And a few cold ones!)

As for the September MB Oyster Roast, it's probably going to be another MB GTG. We're still in the planning stages--no committee chair has been appointed, but GoTravel is the master oyster chef. Everyone is welcome, details to follow later.

One possibility Mrs. Beach Dweller mentioned to me is to make it the same day as the Liberty/Broadway Oyster Festival (at Broadway at the Beach), usually first weekend in November. They roast oysters, serve Liberty (local brewed) beers, have live music--it's pretty cool, but November is a ways off. Maybe we should do both a September and a November oyster GTG.

Not that I am looking for another excuse to party ;-)

GoTravel Jul 6th, 2006 09:49 AM

That is the weekend of the NYC Marathon so you would have to count me out!

I would leave my expert oyster roasting instructions and skills with icee whom has already had success with my formula! LOL!

Budman Jul 6th, 2006 10:22 AM

The weekend of September 16th looks good right now for us to fly down. The Mrs. doesn't do oysters or drink beer, so there's my designated driver. :-) ((b))

GoTravel Jul 6th, 2006 10:33 AM

Well I do both to excess so there ya go!

:-D

beach_dweller Jul 6th, 2006 11:01 AM

Budman and GoTravel,

just save some beer for me!

September 16 sounds like a winner to me. Perhaps we should think of penciling in that date. Anyone else tuned in think that weekend sounds good?

And we should probably start a new GTG thread once we're done hijacking OWJ's original post ;-)

starrsville Jul 6th, 2006 11:34 AM

Well, I for one, vote a BIG FAT NO on a GTG and oyster roast on the SC coast on a weekend when GoT can't be there.

Otherwise, count me in. I'll "work" my way on over.

Budman Jul 6th, 2006 11:40 AM

Oops, as it turns out, that won't be a good date for us. ((b))

iceeu2 Jul 6th, 2006 01:09 PM

Y'all do it when it is convenient for the majority. If we can make it, we danged sure will and if we can't you need to take lots and lots and lots of photos!

((8))((8))MYRTLE BEACH DAYS((8))((8))

OneWanderingJew May 29th, 2009 03:07 AM

Topping because the 4 OWJs are going back! Yaaay!

When I posted this 2yrs ago, we were a couple who desperately wanted to be parents. A little less than 3 months after we got back from NMB, our dream came true through the miracle of adoption.

We are really looking forward to going back with our 2.5 yr old daughters.

(Icee2--we will email ya with some dates!)

Gretchen May 29th, 2009 04:25 AM

I haven't read the posts, but GO SOUTH. Calabash is a shell of its former glory as a place for good food--and we have eaten there in the last few months.
Go to Murrell's Inlet. Creek Ratz is fun and the food is good.
Actually SaraJ's at the Garden City causeway is a bit closer and good and the Conch Cafe ON the waterfront in Garden City is good--and great to eat on the water.
Inlet Crab Restaurant in Murrell's Inlet.

Dayenu May 29th, 2009 06:40 AM

Bon Voyage, OWJ! It will be a new experience to see the familiar place through the eyes of your daughters. We need a Fodor's Junior forum :))

iceeu2 Jun 3rd, 2009 05:25 PM

Hey, OWJ.......you think maybe it was 3 years ago since those baby girls are already 2 1/2???? Time flies!
