Oh baby it's cold outside! HELP!

OK, I am sitting in freezing cold Milwaukee WI trying to stay warm. Can anyone give me a good description of a wonderfully tropical place to picture in my mind and try forget this coooooold weather? What's your idea of the perfect tropical paradise?

Elena Jan 23rd, 2003 11:53 AM

If I wasn't so cold right now, I could answer your question. I am in the middle of Alabama and the high is 20 today, low 6, and with wind chill of -2. Deep South? Deep Freeze would be a better description.

Hi Sara, another Milwaukean here. I just made plans to leave in two weeks for Colorado. I know thats not exactly a warmer locale and I don't even ski. Oh well, got cheap air fares,my son lives out there and they actually have snow. After that I'm going to try to get back to Puerto Vallarta later this spring. Hang in there, Summerfest is just around the corner!!

Cat Jan 23rd, 2003 01:49 PM

Having a heat wave here in Omaha--it is 1 degree outside.<BR><BR>Like the beach boys say: &quot;Aruba, Jamaica, oooh I wanna take ya, Bermuda, Bahamas....&quot;

LordBalfor Jan 23rd, 2003 02:00 PM

Here you go.<BR><BR>http://community.webshots.com/user/lordbalfor<BR><BR>I used to live in North Dakota so I remember that kind of cold.<BR><BR>I don't miss it.<BR><BR>Ken (in suprisingly mild Seattle)

Speaking of cold... all week it has been HIGHS of -20 to -15 CELSIUS which is about -4 to +5 FAHRENHEIT.<BR><BR>The windchill has it around -23 FAHRENHEIT every day this week.<BR><BR>&amp; that's the HIGHS! What fun. Cold crisp air, snow crunching underfoot.<BR><BR>Ontario Canada

scigirl Jan 23rd, 2003 02:09 PM

Well - it is a relatively chilly 60-70's at night here in Honolulu, low 80's for the highs during the day. It got done to 58 (!) one night last week. Right now the sky is quite blue, the sun is out, its breezy.... Pretty much perfect. I feel your pain - I lived in MI for 25 years. I moved to FL after the coldest winter in many many years (one day it was -60 with wind chill -- BRRRR!). HI is even nicer than FL.<BR><BR>Anyhow - strongly recommend searching for a cheap ticket and coming to HI for a visit!

Postal Jan 23rd, 2003 02:41 PM

I remember the low getting down to 50 or so when I lived in Hawaii and we all had our electric ovens on with the doors open since no one had any heat.<BR><BR>Now I live in Orlando, and luckily we have heat, because the low tonight will be 28! What a cold winter this has been!

Jennifer Jan 23rd, 2003 03:01 PM

Is there anyone besides me who actually likes cold weather? I know it can be rough, but I prefer really cold weather to sweltering heat where you can't even breathe outside. I just try to appreciate all four seasons. I live in the south (Birmingham, AL), so I have my share of hot weather.

Susan Jan 23rd, 2003 03:53 PM

Thanks for posting your webshots, Ken! I use it for my desktop, so I followed you link out of curiosity. Everyone -- check out Ken's pix!

Jen Jan 23rd, 2003 05:15 PM

Tampa here: low tonight is suppose to be in the 20s with windchills in the teens - high tomorrow is suppose to be 48. I realize that is &quot;nice&quot; or &quot;warm&quot; for most of the country now but if you are coming to Florida this weekend - bring a jacket!

pam Jan 23rd, 2003 05:16 PM

I am in philly and I cannot remember a winter like this. It is so cold the pipes have frozen and water will not drain. This is not good. Good news, we are leaving Sat. for the Southern Caribbean. I can't wait.

Surfergirl Jan 23rd, 2003 05:24 PM

If it will help, it has been a blissful week here in L.A., with temps hovering between 72 and 80 f., blue skies (surprise, no smog!). We added some dishwashing liquid to the spa, and just melted away in bubbles!

New Englander Jan 23rd, 2003 05:26 PM

Vermont - brrrr!<BR>Surfergirl, I hate you!

New englander Jan 23rd, 2003 05:27 PM

P.S. Hawaii, under a waterfall with my guy

Parrot Mom Jan 23rd, 2003 05:33 PM

Well, my tickets came for Punta Cana today..the suitcases are opened and I just put on my flannels to dream of the hot sun..only 16 more days...Record cold here for at least ten days..

njgirl Jan 23rd, 2003 05:57 PM

Well, it is 11 degrees here in Northern NJ and going Down:O(<BR> I keep thinking about warm places to move to and when can I do it!!!

xx Jan 23rd, 2003 06:10 PM

Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, think of the military now serving in Korea at the DMZ in this kind of weather. I was in Korea in Jan of '53 when it was cold like this and the fox holes were never warm.

LordBalfor Jan 23rd, 2003 06:14 PM

Glad you liked the tropical photos page Susan. Hope they make people feel a little warmer on the inside. The Bora Bora and Aitutaki albums are my favorites. Bora Bora is the most beautiful place I have ever been, but Aitutaki was pretty terrific too - 80+ degree crystal-clear water (sigh).<BR><BR>Ken

califgirl Jan 23rd, 2003 07:36 PM

In Santa Barbara today it was short sleeves and sunscreen weather- beautiful, in the 70's. I'd like to see snow here though, just for a day!

Melissa Jan 23rd, 2003 10:13 PM

Just got in from jogging around Ala Moana Beach Park here in Honolulu. Yep, it is pretty nippy tonight and I will have to use two blankets! But the sunset was wonderful and mostly clear skies. <BR><BR>Postal, that is exactly what my brother does with his family! When it dips into the lower 60s, the family gathers round the oven like a makeshift fireplace.

chris Jan 23rd, 2003 11:16 PM

I wish I could help you. I live in normally sunny Tampa, FL. But, right now it's 28 degrees.

OliveOyl Jan 24th, 2003 02:28 AM

28 in Tampa at 6:30 AM. We've got half our landscaping covered in sheets. The news is not all bad though. This is the first time in 5 years the temp has fallen below 30 degrees.

Sarah Jan 24th, 2003 03:54 AM

Burr it is 8 degrees in NYC and I am going skiing in the colder VERMONT this weekend. <BR><BR>My feet were freezing walking from the bus two blocks to work AND I STOPPED INDOORS TO BY COFFEE!!!<BR><BR>I want to write a letter because they took down the Hawaii video inside the sony plaza, :):):) It warmed me up, I had a bit of the Hawaii drug before work in the morning. A video of Kauai and Maui beaches in the warm warm sun.

Sarah Jan 24th, 2003 03:55 AM

Buy will learn to spell one of these days!

Frozen Jan 24th, 2003 04:31 AM

What the heck going on? I'm here in mountains of NC; its -3 and warmer than Maine, Montana and Alaska!! Did the earth flip?

Barry Jan 24th, 2003 04:40 AM

Frozen you have to see the Hudson and East Rivers they are freezing up in large ice chunks. We never see this.

zootsi Jan 24th, 2003 04:59 AM

It's been -10 f or less every morning here in New Hampshire for the last week, -25 last Saturday AM! We also have 4 feet of snow on the ground. We are used to cold up here, but this is the coldest, snowiest January in a while - a real 'old fashioned' winter!

Craig Jan 24th, 2003 05:09 AM

It's -6 this morning in southern new Hampshire; the only bright side of this 12-day cold wave is that the sky has been cloudless--bright blue sunny days. But if you're one of the people coming to NH or VT to ski, please dress appropriately, or they won't let you on the slopes--if they're even open.

suzanne Jan 24th, 2003 09:31 AM

I think we feel the cold here in NYC worse than anywhere else because almost all of us take public transit to work...so we've got to WALK in it every morning...brr...<BR><BR>Fashion goes out the window as we pull on our thick socks, warm boots, big fat mittens and hat...and wrap a scarf around our heads 5 times with just our little eyes peeking out...

Mafiaso Jan 24th, 2003 09:40 AM

Dem aint ice chunks, they &quot;old friends&quot; so to speak.

abc Jan 24th, 2003 09:46 AM

it's like -6 degrees with the windchill here in nyc! and all of us that dress in black look pretty funny in our big coats, hats, scarfs...but ny'ers are tough. we'll handle it. pina colada anyone?

mm Jan 24th, 2003 10:02 AM

Another report from New Hampshire.<BR><BR>My wife and I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Waterville Valley with the intention of skiing and relaxing.<BR><BR>Tues: -12F on the summit w/35mph winds<BR>Weds: -17 on the summit w/25+mph winds<BR><BR>They closed the mountain on Wednesday. Dangerously cold. Frostbite within minutes if skin is exposed.<BR><BR>We did not ski but spent a lot of time in the hot tub, eating, and drinking.<BR><BR>Today it's above zero and it seems comfortable.<BR><BR>MM

Barbara Jan 24th, 2003 11:05 AM

Here in San Diego it's sunny and 68F. The weather for the Superbowl should be a couple of degrees warmer. So, if you watch the game on Sunday, you might get lots of lovely pictures of warm, beautiful San Diego.

Lenore Jan 24th, 2003 12:02 PM

Here in the Ft Lauderdale area we had record lows this morning and our high temps for the day are expected to be record lows as well. A little warmer tomorrow, but we've had a very cold January this year. <BR><BR>My tropical paradise fantasy is lounging by the pool at our resort in Wailea Maui, sipping a Blue Hawaiian and watching the whales play in the beautiful sapphire blue Pacific. Pure Heaven!

ramjet Jan 24th, 2003 12:27 PM

mm: Maybe you can help me out here. My family of 4 (2 boys-16&amp;9) do 2 vacations a year. We do a summer trip &amp; a winter trip; for example in 2000 winter we did Yellowstone, San Francisco in summer, then Manhattan in winter, etc.. We plan about 6 months in advance and love the &quot;spur of moment&quot; choices. We stay within continental U.S.. New Hampshire has come up a few times. What can you suggest? Doesnt matter if winter or summer, we average 5 days, we like the outdoors, like history, like to eat!, and like &quot;tourists traps&quot; so to speak. Can you recommend some ideas? Thank you so much.
