No Carry-on Luggage Allowed UK-US flights!!

*Terror alert elevated to critical in UK.
*UK to US flights under scruntiny for terrorists activity
*All passengers will be hand searched.
*Expect long delays at all British airports.
*No carry-on luggage will be permitted.

SpeedBuggy Aug 9th, 2006 10:26 PM

"The current threat level is assessed as critical as of 10th August 2006 - this means that an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK." BBC News.

"Security at all UK airports has been increased and additional security measures have been put in place for all flights.

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage must be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:

Pocket-size wallets and pocket-size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags)

Travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets)

Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg, diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic

Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases

Contact lens holders, without bottles of solution

For those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags)

Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes)

Tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs

Keys (but no electrical key fobs). All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be X-ray screened.
Pushchairs and walking aids must be X-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate.

Extra time

Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

There are no changes to current hold baggage security measures.

Regrettably, significant delays at airports are inevitable. Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.

These additional security measures will make travel more difficult for passengers, particularly at such a busy time of the year. But they are necessary and will continue to keep flights from UK airports properly secure.

We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only.

In light of the threat to aviation and the need to respond to it, we are asking the travelling public to be patient and understanding and to cooperate fully with airport security staff and the police.

If passengers have any questions on their travel arrangements or security in place at airports they should contact their airline or carrier."

Scarlett Aug 9th, 2006 10:46 PM

Thank you Speedbuggy, I think this is already posted on the Europe forums.

SpeedBuggy Aug 9th, 2006 10:48 PM

It is, thanks! But it is something I believe we should all be aware of, and not all posters on the US board go to the Europe board.

CaliNurse Aug 10th, 2006 02:18 AM

Thanks Speedbuggy. Agree with you--this situation is something we all should be aware of, on any forum, or part of the world.

Also, no cell phones, ipods, etc allowed.

WOonder when/if the US will follow suit?

starrsville Aug 10th, 2006 02:30 AM

Carryon threads have a whole different meaning this morning.

Congrats to Scotland Yard and the great detective work that foiled a massive plot.

missamericalondon Aug 10th, 2006 02:50 AM

In London right now -- flights are being cancelled, airports may close later today. Chaos as flights can't leave or land. Most airlines are allowing re-booking for no penalties. Might be worth considering.

travel_addict Aug 10th, 2006 03:13 AM

CNN just said anyone flying anywhere out of the US should arrive at the airport more than 2 hours ahead of time for the extra security here.

gail Aug 10th, 2006 03:16 AM

The FOX News guy just said no liquids on US flights as well - do not know if that is just international or domestic as well (for those following threads on Airline board - that should solve all the bathroom issues posted lately!)

schmerl Aug 10th, 2006 04:45 AM

My sister is due to fly back to the US from London tomorrow. She is in Prague right now.I hope her flight can get out of London since our 94 year old father is not well.
I will be a nervous wreck until she is here safely on US soil!

Ida101 Aug 10th, 2006 04:57 AM

Not just the UK airports have big problems, but also many european airports had to delay or even cancel some flight to/from the UK.

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 05:13 AM

UGH!
Well at least the plot was foiled! thank God!!
I am headed to Turks and Caicos on SAt. morning. I have a 6am flight I am going on--now I ll have to leave around 1 am!!

tamjam Aug 10th, 2006 05:23 AM

The same liquid restrictions apply on US flights as well.

karens Aug 10th, 2006 06:15 AM

I truly undertstand security precautions, but please, please dont' tell me we can't use electronic devices like portable DVDs and laptops? What will I do with my kids?!

My husband will be bummed, too. He doesn't read, so he heavily relies on ipods and his laptop to keep him occupied on long flights.

Can anything else go wrong in our world??? (This last comment is more global, and does not refer to the mere fact that my son won't be able to watch a DVD on a plane).

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 06:21 AM

What will the future hold in store??

It's gotta be one or the other. Meaning, liquids will need to be checked from now on or electronics will not be allowed on board.

How they (TSA) will be able to keep up with this one is beyond me.

Karens, I understand what you mean. But what concerns me more is the fact that we unfortunately have to explain to kids the reasons for these exclusions. A frightening way to have to grow up now-a-days. :(

Suerich68 Aug 10th, 2006 06:29 AM

Is anyone else worried about the partial group of Arab students who "disappeared" I think in Colorado a few weeks ago?

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 06:34 AM

Karen-
I hear you but what did we do when we were kids> I am 40 so I had no computers or dvd's when growing up..we used to use our brains more lol back then!
I am off to the Caribbean SAt. and I have 19 mo old twins.Should be interesting.....I better pass out the earplugs on the flight!:)

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 06:35 AM

Sue-I hadn't heard that one! ay ay ay!! Scary world we live in today isn't it? Thank God Scotland yard foiled their attempt at this crap.

karens Aug 10th, 2006 06:35 AM

As the Madagascar penguins (and Beavis and Butthead) would say...

this s*&ks.

JAGIRL Aug 10th, 2006 06:43 AM

I wonder what parents with small kids are going to do ?

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 06:46 AM

LOL, jag...if some people had their way around here, they'd like to see small children checked at the gate. ;) :D

SpeedBuggy Aug 10th, 2006 06:46 AM

I've been watching this all night. Seems it was Continental, United, and American . . . maybe others, can't remember. All USA airlines coming from UK to US.

All transcontinental flights from US to UK now have the same "no carry-on" restrictions. It's changing minute to minute so definitely check the homeland security website (and any other with flight info) before you take any flight in the new future. Thanks you Scotland Yard, and God Bless the USA. Scares the hell out of me that people are trying to blow up my children! :(

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 06:48 AM

BA too.

dfr4848 Aug 10th, 2006 07:03 AM

Hi Sue - I think you may be referring to the group of exchange students from Egypt who were scheduled to enroll at Montana State Univ. last week. All but 11 showed up. They found 3 in Minnesota on Tues and 2 (or 3) in NJ yesterday. According to reports, they were interviewed by the FBI and HS and concluded they didn't find any connection with a terrorist organization. The last report I saw didn't say whether they had been released or not and they are still looking for the rest of the group.

jetprincess Aug 10th, 2006 07:23 AM

Just wishing everyone flying soon safe travels and lots of patience!!!!

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 07:28 AM

OMG! I will be with my 19 mo, old twins in Logan airport at 3am--and the flight is at 6am!should be interesting.
Are dvd's allowed or not? I am hearing conflicting reports!!

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 07:31 AM

I'm hearing NO electronics. I'm also hearing no books.

I wonder if you can pack stickers to occupy the children.

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 07:34 AM

omg no books ? ok. I will have everyone giving me the evil eye with twins who are going to be HAIRY, to say the least!!! this should be one heck of a trip....

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 07:35 AM

stickers LOL .,sad, but it'll HAVE to do lol

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 07:35 AM

Tear out pages from the inflight magazine and make them paper airplanes.

travel_addict Aug 10th, 2006 07:36 AM

What harm can books cause?

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 07:38 AM

Don't know, other than it's just easier to ban things entirely or perhaps containers can be hidden inside and they don't want to have to screen them all. All I know is that my BIL, traveling UK to JFK was told they were not allowed. I can't entirely clarify if it is the same traveling in the other direction.

Gardyloo Aug 10th, 2006 07:41 AM

Here's what I know -

US domestic flights and flights TO all foreign destinations including the UK - all liquids/gels etc. to be in checked bags. Exceptions limited to Rx meds, baby formula. Apparently the TSA inspectors will "verify" that any permitted liquids are legit (e.g. take a sip from baby's bottle, etc.) Otherwise, check it or chuck it. Wife's traveling companion this morning had masacara, lipstick, sunblock go bye-bye. Cell phones, laptops, other electronics okay but subject to normal inspection standards (including SSSS if they think it's wise.)

UK-originating flights - no carryons beyond travel tickets/ID (passports etc.) Rx meds and other pocket contents; no liquids, eyeglasses cases, women's handbags, computers... in short, nothing but the clothes on your back and a baggie filled with a very short list of allowable contents.

Keep tuned to official media on this - there's a lot of misinformation rolling around. I have CNN on behind me and another window open to BBC as I write this, and I've probably made a mistake as it is.

sunnydelite Aug 10th, 2006 07:44 AM

yikes! Can I bring my purse on without the liquid stuff? or one plastic clear bag only??
going to turks and caicos out of Logan Sat.

Seeworld---I tried the paper airplane thing--works for 1 minute then they eat it lol

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 07:49 AM

sunnydelite, this will be your opportunity to create a whole new bag of tricks...what can I say?? Just pack the baggie, and put your bag in your suitcase!

Bring candy.

GoTravel Aug 10th, 2006 07:53 AM

It looks like alcohol will be the only way to entertain yourself on flights these days.

Hmmn. Plane arrival=Passengers plastered.

tracys2cents Aug 10th, 2006 07:55 AM

All these years of beefed-up security...suddenly shampoo and cell phones are dangerous? If they are, why hasn't our wonderful Homeland Security figured this out until NOW? Just sitting around waiting for the terrorists to outsmart them AGAIN?

karens Aug 10th, 2006 08:18 AM

Best wishes to you, sunnydelite! We have found that flying with kids, the DVD works like a charm to keep them quiet, occupied and stop kicking the seat in front of them!

What in the world will *I* do on a 7.5hour flight without a book? The only reason I look forward to flying is b/c I can read!

karens Aug 10th, 2006 08:21 AM

My husband and I have a huge decision to make. I have outbound FF tix to London for next July (2007), and I have to call tomorrow to secure the return flight. Do I want to fly with my kids without all this stuff? (No.) Do I still want to go to London (Yes.)

We are ticketed on Air Canada (and flying through Toronto) - maybe that will give us a bit more protection? Although overseas USair flights have those built in TVs...

I was having a really hard time getting FF tix to London - I wonder if it will be as hard now?

I still agree with the Madagascar penguins.
