I Hate To Be The One to Bring It Up.....

But TD #12 officially exists now. Good gosh, is it ever going to end?

Spygirl Sep 16th, 2004 04:22 PM

Statia-have you had ANY sunny skies down there lately? Perhaps you should do the mainland for the next couple of months!

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 04:36 PM

That is OK, Statia honey, we here at the SunnyVale Farm for the Hurricane Harrassed, don't mind hearing about storms. We just sit here quietly on the porch and take our meds when the nice nurse comes around.
Ooops, they caught me on their computer again, so you stay safe honey and when this season is over and they send me home, I will talk to you :)
love, Scarlett

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 04:42 PM

Yikes, is Scarlett in the funny farm? Statia, maybe, just maybe, if you don't post them on Fodors then they just might not exist. I'm beginning to see a pattern here...

cigalechanta Sep 16th, 2004 04:49 PM

I hope for your sake and everyone else at the mercy of this terrible weather beast, will be able to relax soon and not experience anymore loss and damage.

Statia Sep 16th, 2004 04:50 PM

Actually, Tadoori Girl, this is the first one I've originated a thread about, but you might be right. Perhaps we should just all ignore "them." :)

Scarlett, can I join you on those meds? The Pinot Grigio just isn't doing it for me anymore. :D

Not to make light of the situation, but should I make a toast to Karl?

coccinelle Sep 16th, 2004 05:07 PM

Sorry for all of you that are in the eye of the storm.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 05:09 PM

Karl? Is that his name? I think I'll burn one in his memory. I believe he's dying a slow death in the eastern Atlantic as I write this.

Statia, we'll need your cooperation in this. So toast him goodbye. No hello toasting allowed.

Statia Sep 16th, 2004 05:13 PM

You got it, Tandoori Girl. Good riddance, Karl!....or possibly Karl. Although, I don't know how much help I can be. :) Maybe I should get some of these islander witchcraft folks after him.

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 05:28 PM

I might be on my way to the funny farm ... being so tempermental and all ~

Statia, I hope to hear from you before we leave on Monday and that you and I can both gloat over the lack of hurricanes in our forecast :D

Patrick Sep 16th, 2004 05:34 PM

Well, I'm really thinking Jeanne is no threat, but now Karl. That's another matter. Notice how so far it's been the male hurricanes this season that were the biggies?

Patrick Sep 16th, 2004 05:37 PM

Nevermind. I guess Frances was supposed to be a female name, since they alternate. But I always thought the female version was Francis and the male version was Frances. Guess not.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 05:47 PM

Yes, that's right. The male is Frances. But I think Karl is not a biggie wiggie but a teenie weenie.

Haha, Karlo, you're a teenie weenie. Patrick, that must be the ultimate insult for him, to be called a teenie weenie. You know how you men are.

Scarlett, sorry about calling you tempermental. What I meant to say is that you have the fire of life inside of you, a wonderful thing that burns with passion. Don't be mad at me.

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 05:53 PM

Tandoori Girl, I am seldom mad at anyone or at least never for long..:D

My brother called tonight and asked if we had started building an ark yet..sigh..I think a Bunker is a better idea!

Remember the Ark thread :) LOL...
Stay safe everyone ((L))

Patrick Sep 16th, 2004 05:54 PM

OK, if they alternate male and female names alphabetically (which they do), explain why Frances was between Earl and Gaston. They must have meant Frances as a female name. How weird!

Statia Sep 16th, 2004 05:57 PM

Patrick, not to get picky, but....

Frances......female.

Francis.......male.

Statia Sep 16th, 2004 05:58 PM

I forgot my smiley on the end of that last post.

:)

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:04 PM

Oops. The male is Francis.

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 06:05 PM

Let's just call him Frank.

cigalechanta Sep 16th, 2004 06:10 PM

and let's hope it never becomes "Frankie and Johnny."
Gosh it gives my age away!

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:12 PM

No, Scarlett, he was a she. You've mixed genders with all this francis/frances. Maybe Francine.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:15 PM

Yes, Frankie, that's a she.

Cig, let me guess...you're talking about that movie, Frankie & Johnnie?

bonniebroad Sep 16th, 2004 06:21 PM

Jeanne is making us nervous in North Carolina...... she may very well be looking this way! :S Go away, girl!!!

cigalechanta Sep 16th, 2004 06:22 PM

No, it's an old, old song, "Frankie and Johnnie were sweeethearts,"....

hibiscushouse Sep 16th, 2004 06:24 PM

Seems as though Karl may "go to the fish". A term I've been hearing lately.
Now Jeanne..I'm not liking the uncertainty of the forecast. Seems they won't know until Ivan goes away (if that ever happens). But I certainly don't like the track accuweather.com has for it. :(
Enoughs enough!

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:26 PM

I know, I'm joshing you. It's a great song. But let's hope that they're not lovers and that hurricanes don't take viagra.

A nurse told me that because of the barometric pressure of the hurricanes, lots of women go into labor and that all the natal units are full of women having babies now. So there is a bright side to this awful mess after all.

cigalechanta Sep 16th, 2004 06:27 PM

1Frankie and Johnnie were lovers,
2O, my Gawd, how they could love,
3They swore to be true to each other,
4As true as the stars above;
5 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

6Frankie was a good woman,
7As everybody knows,
8Gave her man a hundred dollars,
9To get him a suit of clothes;
10 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

11Frankie and Johnnie went walking,
12Johnnie in his bran' new suit,
13"Oh, my Gawd," said Frankie,
14"But don't my Johnnie look cute?"
15 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

16Frankie went down to Memphis,
17Went on the morning train,
18Paid a hundred dollars,
19Got Johnnie a watch and chain;
20 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

21Frankie lived in a crib-house,
22Crib-house with only two doors,
23Gave her money to Johnnie,
24He spent it on those parlour whores;
25 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

26Frankie went down to the corner,
27Went for a bucket of beer,
28She said, "Oh, Mr. Bar-tender,
29Has my loving Johnnie been here?
30 He is my man, and he's done me wrong."

31"I won't make you no trouble,
32I won't tell you no lie,
33But I saw Johnnie an hour ago
34With a girl named Nellie Bly;
35 He is your man, and he's doing you wrong."

36Frankie went to the hock-shop,
37Bought her a big forty-four,
38Aimed that gun at the ceiling,
39Shot a big hole in the floor;
40 "Now where's my man that's doing me wrong?"

41Frankie went down to the hook-shop,
42Looked in at a window so high,
43There she saw her Johnnie,
44Loving up Nellie Bly,
45 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

46Frankie went up to the front door,
47She rang the front-door bell,
48Said, "Stand back, all you chippies,
49Or I'll blow you all to hell;
50 I want my man, who's done me wrong."

51Frankie went into the hook-shop,
52She didn't go there for fun,
53'Cause underneath her kimona
54She toted that forty-four gun;
55 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

56Frankie looked in at the keyhole,
57And there before her eye,
58She saw her Johnnie on the sofa,
59A loving up Nellie Bly;
60 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

61Frankie threw back her kimona,
62Took out the little forty-four,
63Roota-toot-toot, three times she shoot,
64Right through that hardwood door;
65 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

66Johnnie grabbed off his Stetson,
67Said, "Oh, Gawd, Frankie, don't shoot!"
68But she pressed hard on the trigger,
69And the gun went roota-toot-toot;
70 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

71"Roll me over easy,
72Oh, roll me over slow,
73Roll me over on my right side,
74'Cause my left side hurts me so."
75 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

76"Bring out your rubber-tyred buggy,
77Bring out your rubber-tyred hack,
78I'll take my man to the graveyard,
79But I won't bring him back;
80 He was my man, but he done me wrong."

81They brought out the rubber-tyred hearses,
82They brought out the rubber-tyred hack,
83Thirteen men went to the graveyard,
84But only twelve came back;
85 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

86"Bring 'round a hundred policemen,
87Bring 'em around to-day,
88And lock me in that jail-house,
89Then throw the key away;
90 I shot my man, 'cause he done me wrong.

91"I've saved up a little money,
92I'll save up a little more,
93I'll send it all to his widow,
94And say it's from the girl next door;
95 He was my man, but he done me wrong."

96Frankie went to the madame,
97She fell down on her knees,
98"Forgive me, Mrs. Halcome,
99Forgive me, if you please;
100 I've killed my man, 'cause he done me wrong."

101"Forgive you, Frankie darling?
102Forgive you I never can.
103Forgive you, Frankie darling,
104For shooting your only man?
105 For he was your man, though he done you wrong."

106Frankie went to the coffin,
107Looked down at his face,
108Said, "Oh, Lord, have mercy on me,
109I'd like to take his place;
110 He was my man, but he done me wrong."

111A rubber-tyred buggy,
112A rubber-tyred hack,
113Took poor Frankie to the jail-house
114But it didn't bring her back;
115 He was her man, but he done her wrong.

116Frankie sat in her prison,
117Had no electric fan,
118Told her little sister,
119Never marry no sporting man;
120 "I had a man, but he done me wrong."

121The Sheriff took Frankie to the gallows,
122Hung her until she died,
123They hung her for killing Johnnie,
124And the undertaker waited outside;
125 She killed her man, 'cause he done her wrong.
Notes

1] "There is but small doubt that this extremely old and popular ballad had its origin somewhere along the Mississippi, the reference to Memphis makes that clear; and from its phrasing it seems not unlikely that it is of negro extraction. So many versions have been heard and published, that it is hard to tell just which is the original authentic one. The above is representative. Going very well to chords on a guitar or a mandolin, this is no less popular with cowboy and ranch hands than with the tramps, and has been sung all over the United States" (Godfrey Irwin, 213).
For recent versions of the song, see American folksongs & spirituals: 75 songs of the American Heritage (Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Hal Leonard, 1996). M 1629 .A52 1991 Music Library; and compact discs by Bunny Berigan, 1937/1939 (Paris: EPM Musique, 1991), the music copyright to Kahn, Kaper, and Jurman, and by J. J. 12] bran' new: very new, like a brand-name product off the shelf, not second-hand.

16] Memphis: city in Tennessee.

21] crib-house: a small wooden shack (a crib is an animal's stall or a storage bin for feed).

36] hock-shop: pawnshop.

37] a big forty-four: pistol.

41] hook-shop: shop where

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:30 PM

Ohmigosh, Hurricane Javier is in the Eastern Pacific heading north up the eastern side of the Baja peninsula!

Well, it's only fair that they get some of this action too.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:36 PM

Here he is:

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:41 PM

Oops (my most used word) -- I meant the western side of Baja. And this one will end up in Arizona on day five according to the forecast. Wow. A hurricane for every state.

Cig, I could almost hear your singing.

Patrick Sep 16th, 2004 06:42 PM

OK, not to get even more picky, but are you people trying to tell me that Frances (yes that's how it was spelled) the Talking Mule was a female??? I don't think so!!!

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 06:46 PM

Patrick, all mules are Males.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:46 PM

That was a very deep voice. Wait. Isn't there something about mules. They're hermaphradites or something? No, aren't mules female? maybe Frances was a mere horse.

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 06:47 PM

I was wrong, mules are male and female but males cannot reproduce.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 16th, 2004 06:50 PM

OK, time for an expert. Any farmers out there?

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 06:53 PM

The Mule is a cross between a donkey stallion and a horse mare.
Not a farmer but a horser :)

Patrick Sep 16th, 2004 06:53 PM

Wrong, mules can be male or female! A mule is the offspring of a cross between a male donkey and a female horse, but can be either male or female. The result of a cross between a male horse and female donkey is called a hinny. Both hinnies and mules are usually sterile, but still cna be either male or female.

But Frances was definitely a talking MALE mule with the voice of Chill Wills in the original movies, later replaced by another man. I've just been googling like crazy.

But get ready for this. You can type in Frances the Talking Mule or Francis the Talking Mule and most of the hundreds of posts come up in both spelled just the way you enter it. I'm now suffering from mule stress as well as plywood stress.

bonniebroad Sep 16th, 2004 06:54 PM

I'm a farm girl, but this explains it better:

http://www.imh.org/imh/bw/mule.html

Patrick Sep 16th, 2004 06:56 PM

Bonniebroad that is exactly the site I was quoting from!!!

Scarlett Sep 16th, 2004 06:56 PM

Patrick,

Francis male Latin, Old French
Frances female Latin, Old French

From a meaning of names site..
