From suburban DC, Gaithersburg, MD - The birds were singing their hearts out this morning! The poor things are going to be as confused as the flowers when the weather changes back to winter again, as always does this early in the year. I do wish I could take the rest of the day off to take advantage of the day as the temperatures are going to approach 70. For everyone who can get outdoors today, ENJOY!

Here in central New Hampshire, it's about 52 right now, which is about 30 above normal. The whole winter so far has been warmer than normal, and so has the past 10 years in general. Pretty scary.

Now the radio weatherman is talking about record breaking high 60's in NYC!!
I am going out and not coming back in until dark~c

Nina Jan 28th, 2002 09:18 AM

After some rain last night, I woke up to another sunny and beautiful day in Southern California.

Don Jan 28th, 2002 09:20 AM

Winter's been cancelled? That's news to me. I'm working from home today because our car and truck are stuck in our sloping, gravelly driveway (western Washington state) and can't get out. Maybe if it warms up a little.

I'm really, really glad we don't get snow very often...

Suzie Jan 28th, 2002 09:21 AM

It's snowing in Northen CA and not in the mountains either, down in the valley. We're freezing!!!! Ok it's not snowing Buffalo style but cold none the less.

Ah believe that this unusual weather is caused by the event known as global warming. Under mah plan ah could have saved the environment bah the year 2010. Under mah opponent's plan we are doomed to burn in the fires of hell right here on earth. You'll remember that ah told you the number one problem facing America was the environment, didn't ah? Sorry, but ah didn't even think about terrorism at the time.
Well, Nina, I don't know where you are in Southern California, but in my corner - San Diego - it's very cold (for here!)After a lot of rain overnight, the temerature is now 50F, and we're expecting more rain later today and the snow level is around 2000ft. After this storm leaves us to go visit all you sun lovers in the mid west and on the east coast, we're supposed to have a couple of cold, dry days, then more rain at the weekend. We're all pretty happy to see rain, but it makes the roads very slippy at first, till all the oil has washed away.

For So Cal it's a cool 52 degrees this am. Even Palm Springs is 60. Not excactly warm by our usual standards. Cloudy. Where are you Nina?

It's so beautiful near Chicago that the teenagers are doing cheerleading practice with their short shorts costumes on. Big boom for the car wash people and bust for the plow brigade. I love that I'm getting to use all my old spring and in-between coats that you usually get to use for about 2 or 3 days in March, if you're lucky.

Last weekend all the motor bikes were out again, and those who hadn't drained oil etc. for winter had the last laugh. I love the weather here, as you are constantly surprised by change. Maples have started to bud and some crocus are simply confused, doing a sort of start and stop thing. I have some perennials that were snow covered but really never died back this year yet. One year we received a foot and a half of snow on April Fool's Day. Could happen again but it would melt quickly now anyway. I've heard that the Michigan ski locations are mostly a total bust this year. Our club had to cancel the Marquette trip. If this keeps up, I think we will go canoeing next weekend.

Spring,

You know, of course, that we're going to have to pay for this with a blizzard on Memorial Day weekend, don't you? :-)

Spring Jan 28th, 2002 12:57 PM

Don't remind me! Deep down I just know we're going to get a blizzard the day I'm supposed to leave for vacation!

Grasshopper Jan 28th, 2002 01:54 PM

It snowed in San Francisco this morning. First time since 1976. Brrrrr. (of course I was out in short sleeves hiking yesterday)

Skier Jan 28th, 2002 02:57 PM

Jeannette-The place to ski in MI is Boyne Highlands. They have a 50" base with more snow precicted later this week and cold enough temps they can make it...

xxx Jan 28th, 2002 04:48 PM

Isn't this what the old-timers used to call the "January thaw"?

Dayle Jan 28th, 2002 05:15 PM

Well, skiers, we've got winter big time here in Park City, Utah ! It's been snowing all day and we LOVE IT!!!!! More, more, more.....Park City has 30 inches (new) so far and that means Alta & Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon have lots more. Could be a snorkle day! There will be a lot of people calling in sick tomorrow. Powder to the people!

bm Jan 28th, 2002 05:19 PM

Dayle, don't tell me that! Was at Park City and Alta last week and was praying for a powder day! We'll get ours here in New England soon enough-Thurday! (keeping my fingers crossed!)

Tim Jan 28th, 2002 09:58 PM

Newport Beach was sunny this afternoon. While not overly warm, it was nice enough to eat out on the patio this afternoon. Just to note, Nina said that it was sunny, but never mentioned it being warm in Southern California. There is a difference.

Sue Jan 29th, 2002 03:39 AM

In south Georgia it's in the 80's almost every day - currently running the air conditioner. I would love some cold weather just to get to wear some winter clothes for once!

Mother Nature Jan 29th, 2002 04:15 AM

So the term "global warming" - and all that it will entrail - really does *not* mean a thing to anyone, does it?

The Great Lakes are drying up, folks. Does anyone stop to think what it will mean when places accustomed to a frozen dormant period, and lots of snow cover...have neither? The effects on every bit of life, from a micro-organism now exposed on a stretch of shore to plants, trees, animals....? The ecological toll of this winter....and who knows what else to come....is going to be a whole lot more serious than just the chance to romp about in shorts in January.
