Christine - What my husband used to say on that subject was, "Sharing one room with three kids is not a vacation." So, yes, we had to get an extra room once the youngest was out of a crib. As I recall. a lot of places didn't ask how many people were in the room, just how many adults.

Back to the OP's question - if you ask around, you can find a suite for not much more than a deluxe hotel room. We liked the New Otani - they had suites with a kitchenette, living room and a gigantic bathroom, but no beach view. However, we were on a nice, quiet beach or out at the park or zoo so that the view didn't matter. We much preferred a smaller hotel so we didn't have to trek far with all that kid stuff. This was a few years age, check more recent reports.

I just attempted to make a reservation on at the Halekulani on their website for 2 adults and 2 children sharing one room and it gave me a range of rooms to reserve. I'd call them. I can't imagine the Halekulani refusing you. Maybe I a missed something.

LG2...Which hotel are you referring to on Travelocity?

The suites at the hotels I am talking about are much more pricey than I am willing to spend. I like nice hotels with great views (on the ocean) but not sure why many places are ok with four people (when there is enough bedding) vs. three in others. I had this same problem in Chicago..Four Seasons will only allow 3 people...Frustrating!

By the way, I don't wish to lie or sneak around...But I can see why many people would do it or at least be tempted to do it.

Ashley, Have you called the hotels directly? Perhaps you are bumping into some kind of a restriction on the Travelocity (middle man) website.

Ashley24, the hotels do it BECAUSE THEY CAN, and they want to make more money by having people rent two rooms rather than one. To the person who asked if you should put kids in a room by themselves, no, one parent would sleep in one room and one in the other, as we've done in my family.

Ashley, there is a brand new Embassy Suites at the new beachwalk. Check it out. They have 1 br and 2 br suites.

Aside from standard hotel rooms there are many nice condos listed on great rentals and vrbo.

Auntie stayed at the Embassy and loved it. It's not right on the beach, however. How's it working out Ashley?

I read about three to a room at the Halekulani from a travel book and then started looking on the internet and saw similar info on other hotel websites. I just went to Halekulani's website to try four people. The choices were rooms with one king or two twins. It didn't say I couldn't book a room but how can four people fit on two twins or one king!?? YIKES! Now THAT'S not a vacation!

Ashley, I don't know your dates, but I just tried to make ressies at the Halekulani and I got the option of 2 queen beds.

Ashley24, I just picked Halekulani because it was on your list. I can't imagine a hotel with a limit of 3, unless maybe the limit is 3 adults. Sorry I can't help you. Good luck ....

I just tried again and it only shows 2 twins or one king bed. My dates are over a year away (summer 2008) and they don't take ressies that far away. So I have plugged in other dates (Sept. for instance) and it shows a bunch of room choices but only twins and kings. I will call to see what they say. The book where I read about the 3 person limit is Hawaii with Kids (Frommers).

Another example of the 3 person limit: when I tried to book a Christmas vacation at the Four Seasons on the Big Island several years ago, the reservation clerk said they have a three person limit in their rooms. Our only choices were two rooms or a suite. We ended up staying the 4S on Maui with a king bed, sleeper sofa and a toddler bed for my dd5. Strange!

I wouldn't take hotel advice from a guidebook, rather directly contacting the hotels. That kind of information can change and vary from one place to the next. I would also avoid middle-man website booking agencies like Expedia which may have its own limitations different from the hotel itself.

Sheesh -- PICK up a phone and CALL them and simply ASK if you can have 2 adults and 2 young kids -- just like everyone has been telling you to do. End of it. Stop dragging out the pondering.

Ashley24~~~ As most of us keep saying, STOP trying to go thru websites or take advice from a guidebook. Pick out the 5 hotels you like best, and call each one, to the front desk directly. Request 1 room for 2 adults and 2 kids. I'll bet money someone will say yes.

I will be placing some calls today to my top choices. Is anyone interested in knowing the results???
