Freaky Friday Rants and Raves 9-22-06

Rant: I overheard a doctor on the phone wanting to make a contribution to a state law maker on behalf of our local medical group. The next conversation was with the state law maker asking him to vote no on legislation which the local medical group did not like. Buying legislation is alive and well.
=-o

Rave: I still believe in the system despite abuse of it.

Rant: It's been a another really hard week with loved one's medical crises and diagnoses. When it rains, it pours

Rave: Good friends, and good people with good hearts in my life. They are just all around us. We need to focus on them and the good things and try to let the crap drop off the radar.

Wishing Fodorites a safe and happy weekend.

Rave: Jonatha Brooke. 'Nuff said.

"We need to focus on them and the good things and try to let the crap drop off the radar."

Excellent advice, starrsville!

So sorry to hear about all the medical problems. Sending good thoughts your way.

Will post more later.

Good Friday, everyone! :)

Rave--After 60+ days, our infernal home remodeling is finally finished!! The painters wrapped up the last part of the work and left at 8:30 last night. Now life can be good again: No more rising at dawn to move our cars, no more endless hanging around a totally disrupted house with all our furniture in chaotic heaps in the middle of the rooms, no more listening to air compressors and nail guns till our minds slip the very last of their moorings and we descend utterly, irrevocably into madness!!

This has been a really wretched summer, but the relief we feel brings such a sweet happiness that, honestly, it's hard to believe!

I wish everyone a good weekend! Starrsville, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, and I hope things can work out.

Best wishes to all!

Rave: Leaving for ORD tomorrow night (Friday Hawaii time)

Rave: Leaving for Paris next Friday

Rant: Still not packed yet!!

seetheworld Sep 22nd, 2006 02:05 AM

Rave: It's Friday!

Rave: My DH comes home from a week-long business trip!

Smalti, reading your rave reminds me of the nightmares of home renovation! My stomach did a flip-flop, lol. We are in the planning stages of a kitchen renovation, and the idea of living through it again doesn't thrill me for all the reasons you stated. I think I'd rather move! But we are too sentimental to do so (that would be a rave). :)

starrsville, wishing you peace.

My good wishes to those who need them. I'm afraid I don't get to spend too much time here anymore. Hugs to you guys!

Have a safe and happy weekend!

STW :D

marigross Sep 22nd, 2006 03:12 AM

Happy friday!

((Y)) All is well with my family.

((N)) Major Rant and personal pet peeve:

How can people be so angry and frustrated at 6:00 AM!! I have a 6.7 mile commute to work and I saw quite a few instances of road rage.

Many drivers pushed and shoved to be on the turning lane because it was moving faster just to try to merge back at the last minute, thus completely blocking the turning lane. Irrisponsible and criminally negligent driving is rampant in this island! AAAARRGGGHHHH!

I alos witnessed several parents screaming at the top of their lungs to their children inside their cars. Why don't they prepare in the evening and send the kid to bed at 8:00 PM so the child can be well rested and not dragging feet in the morning. So what if the parents have to take them out of a few extra curricular activities in order to have a well rested child (and parents).

I think that if people would go to bed early instead of watching TV until midnight, everyone would be in a much nicer mood in the mornings. That is why I think that TiVo is the greatest invention!!!!!

If people are experiencing road Rage at 6:00 AM, what does that leave for the evening? physical assault or murder?!?!?!

Mari
-a happy morning person, proudly going to bed well before 10:00 PM -

P_M Sep 22nd, 2006 03:57 AM

starrsy, wishing the best for you. ((L))

Marigross, I know what you mean about road rage, I hate road rage too. UGH.

Rave: One week til ALOHA!! :-D

Rave: All my Fodor's pals.

Rave: Leftover chocolate cake from office party, I'm on my way to grab a piece for breakfast. YUMMMMMEEEEEE!!

Rant: I can't think of any because I'm going to HI in a week. :-))

Happy weekend to all.

Later gators. :-p

PamT Sep 22nd, 2006 04:07 AM

Best wishes and good thoughts to starrsville - hope all works out well for you.
Rave: I'm with STW -IT'S FRIDAY!!

Rave: Going away next weekend with my sweetie:)

Rant: 6 month "follow up" mammogram on Monday for what they believe is a benign area (hope they're right)

Rant: Good friend diagnosed with breast cancer having a mastectomy on Wednesday next week.

Rave: I only have to commute two days a week and work at home the rest of the week! Thanks to a wonderful employer!!
Happy Weekend All :)

ethel Sep 22nd, 2006 04:19 AM

Starrsville--good thoughts to you. Sorry to hear about all you're going through.

PamT--good luck with the "follow up". Keep thinking positive.

Rave: 1 more week until you know what. I bet you are all ready for it to be over so I can stop talking about it.

Rant: I thought I'd be able to pick up my dress tomorrow but now I don't know.

Huge Rave: As of 4:00 today, I will be on vacation until 10/11.

Humongous Rave: Only one week and 3 days until I'm in Puerto Vallarta with my new husband. That's so weird to say :)

Happy Weekend to all!!!

AnnMarie_C Sep 22nd, 2006 04:35 AM

starrsville, sending good thoughts your way.

MelissaHI, enjoy a wonderful trip!

smalti, one of my friends just completed a major renovation at her house, too--what a nightmare she, her husband, the cats and dog lived through but it was so worth it in the end! Enjoy the fruits of your labors!!

PamT, I went through something similar a few years ago--waiting is the hardest part. Praying that everything turns out to be okay for you.

Major Rant: drunk drivers killing innocent people time and time again. This week, a local neurosurgeon, working late on call, was hit by a drunk driver and killed leaving behind a wife and 12 year old son. This accident happened on the same stretch of highway my best friend and her family were hit, driving home from church on a Sunday morning, head on by a drunk driver just a year ago. A month after that accident, on the same stretch of highway, another family was hit head on, on a weekday morning around 6 am, by a drunk driver killing two of the passengers. Times this by however many cities and towns there are across the U.S..

I'm feeling especially ranty this week so I'll stop there... ;-)

Rave: Finding good laughs on this board--they always come at a time when I need them most! :-)

angethereader Sep 22nd, 2006 04:59 AM

Rave: Weekend in Chicago for our 25th and DH's 50th Birthday. Working half a day today! (is that a separate rave?)

Rave: Oldest DS stopped by on DH's 50th to wish his HB and give his some CD's. Made the day.

No Rants this week

starrsville - sending good thoughts your way

smalti - enjoy!!

melissa - Wow! Have in HI!

PamT - We're going away for weekend too - have fun. I've had mammogram issues the past couple of years too. Along with a sister who was diagnosed with breast cancer last November. Dont' worry, if they really thought there was in issue they wouldn't wait 6 months. I am currently in 6 month ultrasound mode. (I have to get an ultrasound on one side every 6 months).

ethel - NO! We love your anticipation. It's nice to have good news every week. Make sure to post a trip report when you get home. We've been to PV three times. I love the area, you'll have a great time.

Rave: One more - Youngest DS is home for 6 months before heading back to college. Boy it's nice to have him around. He and I have the same sense of humor. Most of the time DH just gives me a look and shakes his head.

StephCar Sep 22nd, 2006 05:13 AM

Rave: It is Friday!

Rant: I am not going to HI, Paris or on a honeymoon anytime soon….I am envious!

Rave: I was hired to complete six mini-projects in the next two months—YE$$$$!

Rant: Had one of those parenting moments where you think: “Man, I am really not doing my job!” My 4 year old was asking a lot of complex questions, so I took the easy way out and said “because that is the way God made it.” His response was “WHAT IS GOD?” Sigh. My mother would spend all day in church if she heard this.

Rave: My rants are really insignificant compared to what others are going through--wishing everyone the best.

Rant: Thumb still not 100%, had a mini-relapse and now need an x-ray to see if any foreign bodies remain. I am starting to wonder how hard it REALLY is to live without a thumb.

Rave: One of my best friends had a baby girl yesterday! Ani is next!!!!!

Have a nice weekend everyone.

bennnie Sep 22nd, 2006 05:21 AM

Rave: I am blessed and I know it -good friends, good family, good job, good health.

Rants: - None today. See above plus it is absolutely gooorrrgeeeooosss (to quote Kayne from Project Runway) today.

Smalti - I feel your pain - literally - air compressers and nail guns, wet paint, wet plaster, dust, dirt, clutter, too many decisions etc, etc. But I keep believing it will be all worth it in the end. I am sure your remodel is beautiful.

Eeva - say hi to DD for me. She loves your class (not just sucking up either LOL). Every day she tells me something new about the Roman Empire.

Starsville - Prayers for you.

Ethel - we can't wait for the wedding because we want a full report. Will you change your name to Mrs Ethel after next week?

BuffaloGirl Sep 22nd, 2006 05:44 AM

Rant: My son broke his leg during a soccer game this week.

Rave: If the break was just 1/2 in either direction, it could have been a lot worse. It was his tibia, not his growth plate or knee.

Rant: No soccer for a year (that's a lifetime to a 15 year old).

Big Rave: Dad is doing so much better (still in rehab). He can't wait to get out of there an into an assisted living facility. It looked like he was going straight down hill after mom's death, but he has surprised us!

Rant: I had to turn the heat on in my car this morning - it was that cold.

Rave: My brother was home this past weekend to help me out with things and we had a more lengthy discussion about visiting ITALY next year. :-) I think we're definitely gonna do it...OMG!!!! I'm going to be like a kid in a candy store.

My best to all having family or self health issues, those ready to give birth, and those who are going to be walking down the aisle (Ethel)!

Have a great weekend everyone!

travel_addict Sep 22nd, 2006 05:45 AM

Big, big rave: Went to see Eric Clapton & Robert Cray at the VanAndel Arena last night and the show was AMAZING!! This is the 5th time I've seen Eric Clapton - starting way back when I was 18 - and I was expecting him to be a little more mellow now that he's getting older. Not for a minute! The man can play guitar and he rocked! The whole place was energized. And his newest guitarist, Derek Trucks, really knows how to make a guitar sing - he kind of reminds me of Eric Clapton in his younger days. Keep an eye for this guy as I'm sure he'll make it big. Robert Cray was incredible too, but only played for 30 minutes. He did come out to play with Clapton a couple times though. Excellent night! :D

Minor funny rant: There were two very drunk ladies sitting in front of us, and at the beginning of every song one of them would yell, "Yeeeehaaaawww!" and start clapping her hands & stomping her feet. It was a bit annoying, but she made us laugh the entire night.

Happy weekend & positive thoughts to all of you. And best wishes Ethel!

JJ5 Sep 22nd, 2006 06:09 AM

Rant: Fall in MI and I can't be there.

Rant: Family health problems long term on all counts. They just gave my sister another 6 month chemo schedule until March. This entire will be 19 months long before she is "through". 87 year old Father has been through so much in the last year he is down to 148lbs (over 6' tall)and so mean he isn't even asking about my sister.

Rave: I'm getting 23 brand new window replacements next week for a new house-the seals were flawed. We have to stain them and replace window treatments etc. And it may be messy. Yet I'm to the point where it doesn't matter, as Starrsville said. Ten years ago it would have made me mad.

Rant: Please let it stop raining. I'm so sick of driving in the pouring rain through lakes.

Rave/Rant: marigross' post and same here. Why are people driving like crazies??

Rave: Babies

Rave: Grandkids and their tiny and/or loud voices over the phone.

Rant: New car prices.

I am seldom ranty, but entirely today- and it is because I need to plan a trip and have no time left off nor way to see one coming until 2007.

RAVE: GTG in Chicago post-emails that have given me some "travel" through other eyes in the meantime.

Can't wait to hear about OSB's first GC or Ani's. Have a good weekend everyone and drive carefully. I had the Last Rites twice before I was 20, I've been ultrasounded for 12 years, was told I had thalassemia and given a dire prediction in my 20's etc. It is almost 40 years later. Have fun and they call it "practice" for a reason.

kopp Sep 22nd, 2006 06:14 AM

Good morning, y'all!

starrsville: "When it rains, it pours." So sorry for you. Hope things clear up soon. %%-

ethel: Best wishes! ((M))

marigross & AnnMarie: road rage and drunk drivers, ugh!

BuffaloGirl: I feel your son's pain and know his heartbreak. My DD tore her ACL when she was a high school sophomore, had to wait a year before surgery as her growth plates weren't formed yet, then had 6 months of rehab. She did play for one more season, but said enough is enough. At that age, playing is their life, and it's so hard when it's ripped out that fast.

To all the travelers this week, safe journeys to you! To those in need, prayers of hope. And if you're celebrating, congratulations!

Rant: My parents live in CA (I'm in TX). All their conversations these days are about doctors and pills, over and over and over. They don't even know why they're taking half the stuff. Sometimes I feel the docs are using them as guinea pigs. :@) I just know if I tried to intervene, Mother would have a real snit about it. But I really think half her problems are because of her over-medication for every ache and pain.

Rant: The water out of our faucet tastes like it has dirt in it. Anyone use a Brita and have good results? *-:)

Rant: It's September 22, and it's supposed to be 90 today again! :((

Rave: We're going to DisneyWorld in December! Okay, you naysayers, I know you're out there. But I love Mickey and Dopey, and the decorations at the holidays are so beautiful!

Have a good weekend!

(P_M - a special Alooooooha to you!) :-x

Tess Sep 22nd, 2006 06:15 AM

Thinking of you Starrsville and hoping things look up--wish I could say more that would help...

BuffaloGirl--that's awful about your son--glad the break wasn't 'worse.' My son is a soccer player, too, so I know what you mean about it being a lifetime until he can play again. My son's a senior and he's counting down the minutes until the high school tennis season is over with because it means soccer season is just that much closer. Anyhow, best wishes to him for a speedy recovery and rehab.

Rave: Had a wonderful vacation to Los Angeles/Santa Monica with DH last week. Other than watching our Huskers lose to USC, we had a great time! Loved all the seafood and had a particularly nice day driving up the coast to wine country. Guess I should do a trip report, huh?

MAJOR RANT: We woke up to a broken water heater and a flooded basement this morning--about 6 inches since the drain didn't work. How handy. DH is on the phone right now with insurance people and the cleaning/restoration company. On the plus side, I'm so grateful that he was home for this little incident and not traveling. I haven't been able to get to the storeroom yet and I'm praying that no photo albums or scrapbooks were left lying around on the floor. Furniture, etc. I could care less about but our memories... Ugh, I'm going to flip out if I think too much about this whole mess. I know what the coming weeks will be like, though, since I'm sure we'll have to replace drywall, carpet, etc. Okay, I AM freaking out now...
