Jocelyn-If you are in that much pain, time to go to an orthopedic specialist as Ryan suggested. I tore my ACL skiing, and one of the things my surgeon suggested was not to wear high heels, watch my weight and do weight training to strengthen my quads. No high impact excercise either. I power walk now which is a good alternative.

Good for you Bonnie.

Jocelyn, if you have suddenly upped your running mileage, knee pain is a distinct possibility. The rule of thumb is not more than 10% increase per week.

Strength training for your quads and hamstrings, and lots of stretching should help.Lots of knee pins are often caused by weak muscles especially quads.

But do check with your doctor, I suspect if you back off your mileage a little you will be fine. After that you can gradually up it again.

sheesh meant knee pains :)

Jocelyn - stop running! bike ride!

I started the glucosamine a month or so ago, and I think it was making my knee worse! I quit it a few days ago, and actually have felt better since I quit - little by little.

Rave: Air conditioning!

Rant: As of 3 days ago (Tuesday):

AC at my house had been out for 18 days.

AC at the house my son is moving into was barely working.

AC in my car had been out for a week. (Thought it was due to the 32oz glass of tea I spilled INTO the dashboard, but it wasn't.)

AC in car I just fixed up for my son (to the tune of $1500) was not working.

Aiiiyyyeee!

Temps here near 100. Temp in my house never went below 90. Bought 7 oscillating fans, trying to survive. Cats and dog thought they were dying. So did son and I. Spent $130 twice to have freon put in broken AC, just to get the house down to 80 for a day. Started wearing tank tops, short-shorts and ponytail (at 52)! Son dispensed with clothing. Every bottle of Dasani we drank was turned into a "squirt" bottle or a giant ice cube. Slept outside on trampoline one night. Got a hotel room, and turned the temp to high-cool for one night. Finally wrote out a bunch of checks, and we can breathe again. All of this while I was on vacation. :(

I go back to the ice-box where I work on Monday. Now where is my sweater?

Rave: Summer Fridays!! (I'm outta here at 1pm)

Excellent news about all the weight loss and fitness! On that note:

RAVE: Now 1 pound below pre pg weight...and it was a good weight to begin with! The key? Wine, lots of wine. Oh, and running my ASS off.

RANT: Regardless of weight, the post pg tummy looks....different than it used to. Oh well-Riley is worth it!

Jocelyn_P Aug 13th, 2004 08:06 AM

10% increase per week??? Well, that explains it then. I've been increasing my mileage at a much faster rate and was keeping up just fine, until this week when the knees fell apart. I'll go with the bike and strength training for awhile, then ease back into the running (or power walking). If I'm still having problems I'll go see the dr. Thanks for the advice, all.

Jayne11159 Aug 13th, 2004 08:10 AM

I'm on sending emails and phone #s to family and friends. FYI, they're thinking worst case scenario for Tampa Bay. Pray for us and everyone please stay safe.

tpatricco Aug 13th, 2004 08:29 AM

Happy Friday the 13th everybody!

Rant: Hurricane Charley making me worry about all my Fodorite and real world friends in Florida. I pray for their safety & that their homes are not destroyed.

Rave: Doing more planting in my backyard landscaping project tomorrow. Hopefully the rain on Sunday will not wash everything away!

Can't think of much today except that everyone down in FL rides Charley out safely!

Have a restful & relaxing weekend!

Rave- Dad finally sold his house.

Rant- NJ politics. (no commentary about right or wrongs, just a sad time for all...we all lose)

Rave- DH and I are beginning to plan our 25th wedding anniversary trip for next year. (Gives us something to look forward to in these unsettled times) We're thinking about Eastern Europe.

PS A prayer of safety for all in the hurricanes path.

missjanna Aug 13th, 2004 08:37 AM

Jasper, I'll be taking the Ronkonkoma line on the way home (Brentwood is the most convenient station for me) but I'll be going into Penn Station from Hicksville since I ride in with my BF. All I know right now is I have to take either the 6:21 or the 6:51 home (depending on the time I leave work!)
