Freaky Friday Rants and Raves 5/28/04

IIIIIttttttt'ssssss FRIDAY!!!

Rave: Leaving for NYC in 12 hours for a great weekend w/daughter. Thanks to those who helped plan it (you know who you are).

Rave: Today I booked free hotel rooms in Yokohama and Kyoto w/Starwood points for 3/05 trip w/son. Got totally amazing deals for free (eg. stay 4 nights on points, get 5th night free and no points). Now can plan side trips and rest of trip itinerary. We are so looking forward to this. We are starting to follow Japanese baseball already.

Rave: 2 cyberspace fodors friends are traveling in Japan now.

Rave: Much better week than last week. The stressful work-related situation from last Friday turned out to be a "test" situation set up by a client to see how I would react under stress. I apparently performed well and I got the work. But have any of you ever been subjected to that type of stressful psychodrama? I felt sort of "set-up", but this is apparently becoming an increasingly popular method of checking out your character and reactions.

missjanna: Are you still employed? Saw your invite for pizza Sat. or Sun. We're going to Grimaldi's for early lunch on Monday, then to Jacque Torres Chocolate Factory, walk across the bridge, then to the airport.

hey everyone- et tu?

dwoodliff May 27th, 2004 09:07 PM

Is it Friday again already???

Rave: Daughter's new job is going great. We work for the same office, and I get to see a lot more of her now.

Rant: She hasn't even gotten her first paycheck, and she's already found an apartment (her first). She's hoping to move in next weekend, which means I'll be cancelling my gambling trip -- again.

Rave: Both kids asked if we can go to Cancun again next summer. (Oh, boy!) I'd really like to try someplace else, but anywhere in the Carribbean is fine with me! Prefer somewhere with a "party" atmosphere (for them) and great snorkeling (for me). I'll be asking for suggestions later on ...

Is this another Fodors cyber get-togethers?????

ahhnold May 28th, 2004 03:11 AM

Rant: What is up with Al Gore? Didn't he realize that when he endorsed Howard Dean he lost all credibility.

Rave: Got a Hole-In-One yesterday;-)

ccolor May 28th, 2004 03:56 AM

Rave: I took today off for a 4 day weekend.

Rant: It's raining........

jersey May 28th, 2004 03:57 AM

Rave- My son is out of the hospital and doing well! My family is all together and will be celebrating Memorial Day here.

Rave- My daughter has been notified by several college coaches that they will be watching her play this weekend at the soccer tournament she is playing in. One of the schools she is very interested in will be there.

A safe and lovely weathered holiday to you all. (Please don't drink and drive.)

Anonymous May 28th, 2004 04:01 AM

emd, Yes, I have been subjected to that sort of setup/game playing: "Let's see how you react under stress." In my experience, clients like that are a pain in the neck and you'll regret working with them. They think they're very clever and insist that their opinion is right, even when they've hired you to be the expert. What ever happened to checking people's references to see how they react to REAL situations?! Good luck!

bm May 28th, 2004 04:22 AM

Rave: It's going to be a beautiful weekend up here in VT. Going to get the garden planted, go hiking, and go to my town's Memorial Day festivities.

Rant: We lost 2 of our VT Nat'l Guardsmen in Iraq this past week, so it's going to be an extra-meaningful Memorial Day in my town & in our state this year. My thoughts are w/all our troops over there...

Wildflower May 28th, 2004 04:22 AM

Rave: Our beautiful property in the Adirondacks is on the market

Rave: It's going to rain

Rave: Life is good to us

Rave: Last evening we saw a mother bear with her tiny Spring baby

Rave: Hummingbirds are here

Rant: Our beautiful property in the Adirondacks is on the market

Rant: We won't be going this June to Paris and the Seychelles

Rave: For the first time in many years we are going to be home in June

Rave: We decided to go to Greenland in August

Jersey, good luck to your daughter

RAVE: It's Friday and a long weekend
RAVE: I'm on vacation next week. Off to Naples Florida for some much needed R and R.
RAVE: it's a do nothing vacation, the only exertion I intend to partake of is rolling over on my beach chair
RANT: it's raining today but RAVE it's supposed to be a nice weekend.

emd May 28th, 2004 05:02 AM

Jersey: Sending good positive vibes from me to your son who is just out of rehab; he has a whole new life ahead of him.
And I recall your other son just graduated, and now your daughter is being scouted. That's a good week.

Hopefully next Memorial Day the U.S. will be more at peace.

bennnie May 28th, 2004 05:10 AM

Rave - Mother and Puppy are settling in well to their new home. The kids are loving them and are living up to their responsibilities - so far. Princess has been perfect. Fiona is less than perfect but so darn cute who cares.

Rave - All our servicemen and women who give up so much. You and your families are in our hearts always.

Rave - My church was spared from closing by the Archdiocese of Boston this week. I can still hope that I'll see my daughters walk down the aisle where they were baptized.

Rant - Stupid, self-serving, evil predators who sullied the Catholic Church and those that hid their crimes have caused 65 churches in the Boston area to be closed. My prayers are with those fellow Catholics whose parishes will be gone soon.

doc_ May 28th, 2004 05:35 AM

Rant: Bennnie...And Cardinal Law just got a promotion at the Vatican. Somehow, someway they have missed the big picture. Awful.

GoTravel May 28th, 2004 05:48 AM

Rave: Memorial Weekend and all of you amazing Veterans. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Rave: Ahnold's hole in one! I'm jealous!

Rave: I'm spending the next three days on the beach!

bennnie May 28th, 2004 05:59 AM

HI doc! Long ago my mother told me to place my faith in the Church - not the men who run it. She, as always, was right.

Changing the subject - how about those Sox? Don't you love Pokey!

doc_ May 28th, 2004 06:07 AM

Pokey is the best! But, Manny's attitude and performance is the best this year. He looks like he can carry the team this year. We need Derek Lowe to get his sinker down, and all will be well.

Isn't it great that pokey is batting higher than Jeter this year?

bennnie May 28th, 2004 06:17 AM

Doc - I didn't know Pokey is outhitting Jeter. That's great. My husband and I are going to our first game June 10. Can't wait to check out the changes to Fenway. Wish we had Monster Seats. Maybe someday.

audra May 28th, 2004 06:18 AM

RAVE: A heartfelt thank you to our Vets and all the service people who keep America free. God bless you!

RAVE: We are free to enjoy a three day holiday weekend1!

RANTS: None today. We are free and rich in life and liberty!!

(Bennie: I know what you mean about the Church My mom used to say something similar, except she said to always place my faith in *Christ*, not the Church as the Church is only the man-made home for believers.)

GOD bless America!

bonniebroad May 28th, 2004 06:18 AM

Rave: Thank you to our wonderful people in uniform who protect our freedom everyday. And to our Veterans, God bless you all!

Rant: Shame on those who would do things for political gain, even when it hurts/confuses the country!

Have a wonderful holiday, all!

doc_ May 28th, 2004 06:22 AM

Enjoy the game,Bennnie. I have not been to Fenway in a couple years. Have a $6 beer for me.

buckeyemom May 28th, 2004 06:23 AM

Rant-bennie, our Catholic school tuition just took a hefty jump while they paid out beaucoup $$$ to those evil idiots.

Rave-Picnic with the family this weekend.

Rave-School is out next week.

Rave-Pump price went down 6 cents a gallon just before I filled my tank.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day. God bless our troops and keep them safe. And bless those who have served in the past, especially our WW2 vets who are dying at a rate of 1,000 a day.

missjanna May 28th, 2004 06:30 AM

Rave: Still working. For how long, who knows, I wouldn't put it past them to throw the ax at me today, but that's perfectly fine because....

Rave: Have been on 6 interviews including 2 agencies and have 3 more set up for next week including a 2nd interview with a Foundation on W57th Street.

Rant: It's another day of rain

Rave: It's supposed to be beautiful this weekend

Rave: BF and I may be moving in together on Long Island over the summer

Rave: Actually have plans this weekend, including my BF and I are going to act like tourists for a day

Rant: One of them is to take the poor ((@)) to the vet since she's been throwing up. But she needs her rabies shots anyway.

Rave: Finally getting plans down for my CA/LV trip. I will still need some help from you guys, though!!

Rant: Next Fri is my bday and I STILL have no clue what to do. Any suggestions?

Rave: It's Fleet Week! Everyone honor our servicemen and women. Whether you think they should be overseas or not, they are still doing a job for this country and others.

Rave: 3 day weekend!! Can you say extra sleep??

Hey emd, we can go to Grimaldis on Monday if you want to meet up!

Statia May 28th, 2004 06:37 AM

Rant: Everybody is off work Monday except me! :(

Rave: My DH and I will both be off work together on Sunday, which is a rarity. So, we can spend the day researching our planned spring trip to France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy from the latest guidebook I just got in the mail! :)

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend, everybody!

travelinwifey May 28th, 2004 06:57 AM

Rant: MIL's knee problems may keep us from being able to walk around NY 2 weeks from now. I love her dearly but she doesn't take good enough care of her health :(

Rave: Dad's coming to visit me next week!

buttercup May 28th, 2004 07:07 AM

Rant: thunderstorms are predicted on and off all weekend.

Big Rave: made reservations last night for Boston and Maine trip in July - will have many questions as date approaches. Thanks to all who posted about the democratic

buttercup May 28th, 2004 07:09 AM

Oops - accidentally hit enter. I meant to say thanks to all who posted about the democratic national convention in Boston. It helped us choose dates. I'm sure I'll have more questions as we get closer.

TravelerGina May 28th, 2004 07:11 AM

Rave: Only six more hours until the long weekend starts.

Rave: Its suppose to be sunny, so will do some yard work - picked up some flowers on my way to work to plant in pot on my deck.

Rave: Next weekend (when traffic is down), going north to spend three days in friend's cabin on Lake Huron with sis; relaxing, reading, grilling, and walking along the beach (hoping the weather cooperates).

Rants: After watching news of all the suffering of so many people throughout the world on TV, I'd feel guilty complaining about anything - we can all be thankful this Memorial Day that we are so blessed compared to a majority of people on this planet.

AHaugeto May 28th, 2004 07:32 AM

Rave: The Deacons at my church have a support-the-troops drive going on right now, as one of our members has a son serving in Iraq.

Rant: He's running convoys in and out of Baghdad, and two of his comrades were killed via roadside bomb last week. His Mom is absolutely terrified.

Rave: My company gave me a $100 voucher to spend in our company store for the drive, and I loaded up on sunscreen, gum, dried fruit, candy, deoderant, bandaids, creams, etc. I have a huge bag of goodies in my car that I can't wait to send over there for her son to share with his platoon.

Rant/Rave: I just got a huge new project to work on, which is good and bad right now. Nothing like a huge learning curve in the middle of all kinds of other stuff!

Rave: My folks are up for the weekend.

Rant: We're going to go furniture shopping...

Rave: Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, everyone, and thanks to those teaching their children the meaning of the Holiday. Drive safe.

kimamom May 28th, 2004 09:22 AM

Rant: America's Sweethearts was on TV last night & I waited the whole movie for the line: "Pleeeeeeze Kiki" (what I say to my daughter when I want her to do something for me.) They deleted that scene from the movie. Grrr,,,,,,

Rave: Memorial Day parade in small-town-America, where my nephew (who just returned frm Iraq) and my daughter (with her Brownie Troop) will be marching in. Very proud of both!

Please remember our troops, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who are working hard everyday so that we may be here, making travel plans and going about our everyday lives.

Ryan May 28th, 2004 10:05 AM

Rant: When people use comments like "Shame on those who would do things for political gain, even when it hurts/confuses the country!" if they are implying that those of us against the war are any less supportive of the people who are fighting it.

Rant: That people actually believe that politicians on either side of the aisle don't make 99% of decisions for political gain - ESPECIALLY in an election year.

bonniebroad May 28th, 2004 10:18 AM

Ryan, my statement was not about those for or against the war!!! You are injecting your own meaning into my words........ I was speaking in broad terms, about those who lead and influence others.

cigalechanta May 28th, 2004 10:21 AM

Gads, what Bush has done to relationships and to Iraq!
This memorial day, let's pray our soldiers are withdrawn and sent home.
