Freaky Friday Rants & Raves 12-23
Rave: Postal Service point-and-click pickup service at my door. Not so sure about the guy who picks it up though. He looks like a mass murderer and he doesn't like me because of my frequent pickup orders. If I stop posting you will know why. The mail man did it ! :-d
Rave: living in a very rural area and having nearly every modern convenience. ((h)) Rave: being able to use my local bank ATM card as a credit card. :S- Rave: the internet. I could not have moved back to this rural area and make a living without it. ((i)) Rave: Bill Gates. My favorite billionaire and humanitarian. ((*)) ((*)) ((*)) ((*)) ((*)) Rant: My health insurance premium when up $66 per month. My real estate taxes went up 34.6%. My income is still the same and my house isn't getting any newer. :@) Rant: Have to put up with my short tempered alcoholic brother for Christmas again. Ever wonder why some people don't look forward to Holidays? I hope he calls in sick. But I wish everyone a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays. |
Hi jorr!! Happy Holidays!
Rave: Christmas in Portland Oregon. The Yankee. My children are in other countries having fun. My son is coming home !!!!!! Nothing really worth ranting about, lucky me. ( Oh and this is my 4th year on Fodors, I started posting after Sept 2001 :) Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to All ~ |

Everyone is getting stuff they will hopefully like. I am very grateful that I have two great kids who really did not ask me for anything. They are really so wonderful. I am blessed. We are having Christmas at home with no visitors!!!Yeah!!! We are visiting family afterwards and that will be hectic, but hopefully fun?? :) Merry Christmas to all and safe travels!!! Happy Hannaka (can't spell sorry) to everyone who is celebrating! |

Everything is DONE! I will enjoy my DGD, make her Dad's favorite turkey dinner for Christmas day, and just enjoy going swimming, ice skating, to the IMAX for "Polar Express" AGAIN! :-) What a blessing it will be to have them here for five full days!
I want to wish all my dear Fodorville friends a very Merry Christmas, and to say what a pleasure it is to chat with you guys every Friday! Have a fun and festive Christmas Day!!! :-) |
Rant: This week at work was a burn...
Rave: It's all but forgotten now because I'm off until the new year, and am looking forward to a peaceful Christmas at home. <font color="red">M</font><font color="green">e</font><font color="red">r</font><font color="green">r</font><font color="red">y</font> <font color="green">C</font><font color="red">h</font><font color="green">r</font><font color="red">i</font><font color="green">s</font><font color="red">t</font><font color="green">m</font><font color="red">a</font><font color="green">s,</font> <font color="red">F</font><font color="green">o</font><font color="red">d</font><font color="green">o</font><font color="red">r</font><font color="green">i</font><font color="red">t</font><font color="green">e</font><font color="red">s</font><font color="green">!</font> |
Rave: My siblings and I used to meet for Christmas at my Dad's home until he passed away in 2003. Last year we all did Christmas separately (us in Bangkok), but this year all of them are coming here to Hawaii. 13 are here and 3 more arrive tomorrow! We've got Christians, agnostics, Muslims, Mormons and Jews and we all have so much fun together. But no ham or bacon!
Rant: I'm still recovering from my India trip, and cleaning house was exhausting. Will anyone even notice I just did the surface stuff? Why would they care...its Hawaii and the weather is 80`!!! Merry Christmas & Happy Chanukkah Everyone! |
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Jorr -- Stay on good terms with that postal worker. :-d Rant -- Just the annual "I can't believe I am not done shopping." Rave -- As of 2:15 today I am off 'til the new year. Rave -- Eighth graders who reaffirm that not all "kids these days" are spoiled and inconsiderate. In addition to teaching, I work with a group of "peer leaders" at our school and watching them work on a project this past week, I had the pleasure of witnessing acts of sensitivity and maturity that really touched me. Very happy the project is over though as it was a ton of work. |
Rave: The NYC transit strike is over.
Rave: Leaving for a week in Berlin on Sunday. |
Rave: I'm at work, I'm caught up, and I'm going play all morning on the computer, until I'm off at 11:30 ! Rave: 4 years olds make Christmas magical ! Rave: Watching my son's eyes light up over new bottles of play doh from his babysitter, and him giving her an unprompted thank you and kiss...my weepy eyes ! Rave: I'm breaking out the Christmas cookies today, and for the next week will eat whatever I want, when I want it ! Rave: Everyone's home, safe, happy, and ready to start the holidays. Merry Christmas, and holiday wishes from Nova Scotia Canada ! Cheers everyone ! |
A Merry Christmas From me to all of you, even you Jorr;-) .
Rave: Looking forward to Christmas with my in-laws in Ohio, gotta 6:05AM flight Saturday. |
Hello and Happy Holidays Everyone!
It's been a while since I was able to post on a FFR&R because work has been crazy and I have been traveling! Rave: Leave today for a cruise! I can't wait to go somewhere warm and tropical! Rave: Was able to travel to Alaska and India this year, plus the cruise! Possible trip to Hawaii this February! Rant: Work will be crazier than ever for three weeks after I return from the holiday because of an event we are doing. Rave: Family is healthy and I have a second nephew on the way! Hope everyone has a very nice holiday and a happy new year! |
Rave: Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza, Happy Hanukah and ....
HAPPY FESTIVUS!!! Rave: Done with shopping until we exchange presents in two weeks with my stepchildren. Rave: Riding around looking at the lights. Rave: The six foot pink flamingos are back in my yard! Rave: Christmas lights on Palm trees. Rave: Mr.GoTravel and I were able to help a needy family. Rave: Friends, loved ones, and holiday cheer! |
Rave: There's a lot of good information on this board. I enjoy the friendly banter, differing opinions... and recipes :-)
Wishing those of us hitting the road over the holidays safe travel. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! :)>- |
Jorr
You might want to give that postal service guy a Christmas tip :-) I read that the Postal Service frowns on huge tips and suggest $20.00 as appreciation. Just a thought.... Rave: Family and friends Rave: Husband and I are having a slumber party tonight. Just the two of us! We have a huge TV screen in our lower level with a sleeper sofa in front. Decided we would pull it out tonight and watch a bunch of our favorite movies with our favorite drinks! Rave: Holidays and Holiday spirit. Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukka to all. |
Rant: I got an email looking for help placing a twelve year old cat who was a "loving companion, the best cat ever". Author: a woman who had owned the cat for her entire life. She had just recently bought a rv so she could travel and she didn't want to take the cat. She had decided to put the cat down if she wasn't placed by Dec. 23.
Rave: Cat has a new home. Rant: People who think pets are expendable. Don't buy, give or encourage pets as Christmas gifts unless the new owner really understands the obligations. Rave: Pets forgive. Best wishes for the holiday season! Peace . |
Giant Rave: Went to see my "estranged" friend last evening. We both talked as if we had never had a little tiff(3 years ago), plus, she said that I have given her the best Christmas present ever by coming back into the "family".
Rant: I have only 2 gifts wrapped! I think it is going to be a very late night tonight! MERRY CHRISTMAS |
A Big Rave to cmcfong for giving or helping to find a home for a twelve year old cat. Animals that age are usually passed over.
|
cmc, the woman is an ASS.
geez. |
Rave: No work or campus for 10 days, I will remember how to sleep. YEH!
Rave: Two parties here in the next 3 days- my kids are tonight. Hope they like the new tradition I'm going to start: Ricotta Fried Cakes we are going to do together. Rave: Sunday my birth family and their offspring will all be here, as my brother is home for good from Iraq, and my sister won't start chemotherapy until Jan.2. We are all getting old, but we're all still standing. Rave: My guy, who helps me so much with Michigan, and that I have all next week to rest there. I couldn't do it without him. Rant: The wonderful hoarfrost that made everything look like a Tim Burton movie is melted. Rant: That I always start to feel like I "should have" done the mass Christmas gift glut like everyone else instead of money for school and gifts of shared activities. That marketing does get to you. Peace and inner serenity despite the random nasty relative to all. Merry Christmas, Happy Channukah and real love in your future! |
JJ5
I've got to know how to make Ricotta Fried Cakes! Please post your recipe. Thanks! |
GoT...agreed!
|
Grandson is 5, other son's GF has a 2 year old little girl. This is a rave that I hope doesn't turn into a rant during the holidays!
Looks like a white Christmas in my neck of the woods. rave Work is still busy, so I have to drive down to Columbus on Monday. Rant Still haven't made any real vacation plans for 2006. Rant that I'm going to turn into a rave asap. Merry Christmas |
Rant-Been sick for the last 3 weeks! UGH! Bronchitis, sinus infection, you name it, I have it. Just finishing up a round of antibiotics.
Rave-I lost 15 lbs. Rave-The head elf is cleaning my house. Rant-Why are the bowl games on Jan. 2nd now? Whatever happened to New Year's Day? Rave-OSU vs Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Rave-Daughter's Brownie troop adopted a family. Rant-Someone stole presents from Goodwill. cmc-I was watching Animal Planet and they had a show on Northshore Animal Shelter. Someone left a 10 year old dalmation tied to their fence with a note they couldn't keep her because they were moving. The poor dog was traumatized. Luckily, the shelter found space and decided to keep her until they found a home. County shelter probably would have put the dog down. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all in Fodorville! ((G)) |
Rave: The same one as always - my family and I are so very blessed and we thank God each day.
2005 has been a year with many ups and a few downs. We lost my very special mother-in-law this year to breast cancer. There are no words to describe how wonderful my mother and father in law were. I miss them and my own very special dad very much. I am grateful that my daughters reflect their grandparents spirits so very well. I am also very grateful that my husband and I learned more than a few lessons about marriage, parenthood, and adulthood from that generation. What they taught us will be passed on and on. My own mother continues to live independently and happily despite a litany of medical conditions which would have stopped most people in their tracks years ago. She is a source of inspiration and wisdom to all of her eight children and 16 grandchildren. On the positive side, my daughters continue to grow and mature into beautiful strong intelligent young ladies. My eldest has transitioned into middle school exceptionally well while my youngest continues to shine in her own special way. They both have faced a few challenges along the way and I'm proud of their responses - from standing up to a bully on behalf of a classmate to working hard to reach a goal but falling short yet not giving up. I was fortunate enough to receive a promotion this year and my husband was very successful in real estate as well. Our extended family has grown by two with the birth of two new nephews, both healthy and thriving. Best wishes to all Fodorites for a peaceful Holiday season. |
Rave: The weather looks to be cooperating with our plan to actually make it to my wife's aunt's home in Charlottesville for Christmas.
Rave: My wife's eyes are going to swell when she realizes I got her a new kitty. Rave: Today is our seven month anniversary!!! Rave: Boston didn't overpay for Johnny Damon. Rave: My father, who a year ago last Monday had a heart attack, is in fantastic health and just had a GREAT yearly examination Rant: Too many people take Christmas for granted - but that is their loss and our gain! Merry Christmas to everyone in Fodorland - may family, friends and strangers too bring you all smiles and happy thoughts. |
GoTravel, I second the motion.
|
Me, too. We cancelled a big trip this year because our cat is sick--there is no way on this earth we would leave her behind.
|
Rave: So many good souls looking out for lost and abandoned pets.
Rant: The idiots who had no business being pet owners in the first place. Rave: Finals are over with for our kids and school is out for two weeks. So good having our two teens hanging around the house with their friends. We're blessed! Rave: Our family is heading to sunny and warm San Antonio Dec. 26 for the Alamo Bowl. Four days together with 15,000 of our friends in red. Go Huskers! Merry Christmas to all of my Fodors' friends and a happy, healthy 2006 full of fun and travel for us all :-) |
Rave--Done shopping and now we are relaxing and truly enjoying the holidays:)
Rant--None! Rave--A girlfriend and I do an annual spa vacation, and yesterday we got this trip finalized. Headed to Red Mountain Spa in Utah next month! Merry Christmas Fodorites! |
Rave: 19 y.o son had his friends over last night so they could learn to make latkes which will be served tonight at their holiday gift exchange/party at our house. It meant a lot that he wanted to share our traditions and that his friends wanted to learn. Makes you realize you must have done something right. Once we got rolling, we must have made 200 cocktail size latkes..
Rant: My house smells like fried potatoes. Rave: discovered our 2 puppy boys love potatoes and cleaned up everything that fell to the floor! Rant: will have to make at least 200 more latkes for New Years eve/hanukah party next week. maybe my son and his friends will help. Merry christmas, happy chanukah, best wishes for whatever you celebrate and may you enjoy a new year of love and hrmony with your family and friends, good fortune, good health, and peace. |
Rave: The smells of homemade sauce and Italian sausage are wafting through my house!
Rave: My mother is helping me make lasagna this afternoon. YUM YUM YUM Rave: It's 11:27 a.m. and I'm still in my jammies! Rave: I'm gonna play (that means doing anything I want) later this afternoon, this evening and tomorrow morning! Rave: After putting up our REAL tree and listening to my husband grunting and groaning about how much work it is, and my complaining that he picked a tree that was way too big,I gave in and said next year we can buy a FAKE tree. But I have since come to my senses, and with my son siding with me, we are not giving in to a FAKE tree. Nope, not doing it. (However, in the news today there was a story about an 18" oppossum that popped out of someone's real tree the morning after the put it up! I'll just check for oppossums before our tree comes in the house next year.) MERRY CHRISTMAS! (And Happy Hannukah where applicable....and Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy to all others)! |
BuffaloGirl--LOL! That sounds like us with the tree. My poor husband was not happy when I always pick out the tallest tree we can find. This year it is only 12 feet tall, so he got off easy;) But then I told him I wanted a normal size tree for another room, lol! Thank goodness no rodents came out though, lol! BTW, looks like I will be in Buffalo in about 3 weeks or so.

Love that aroma, Buffalogirl. I'll get mine going tomorrow for Sunday.
For cd, who asked: Ricotta Fritters (Fried cakes- makes about 25-30) 1 pound ricotta cheese 4 eggs 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1/2 cup cake flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 pinch salt 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup Confectioner's (10X) sugar 1. Mix eggs and sugar. Add ricotta & vanilla. 2. Sift together dry ingredients, add to egg mixture. Beat until smooth. 3. Fill pot or deep fryer with oil and heat to 350 degrees. (I use canola.) 4. Drop dough into hot oil by the tablespoonful. 5. Fry until golden brown. 6. Remove to paper towel to drain. 7. Dust with the powdered sugar,and/or drizzle with warm honey or fruit preserves and serve immediately. As good as the old stuff is, I had to try something new as I'm just about all pizzelled out. Lots of people have pets that shouldn't. My cockatiel found me the same way in a series. Why do people take a baby pet that they know may live 20 or more years without thinking of the consequences. Selfish, selfish! A long lived bird is REALLY a committment. There's two excellent places that just run adoptions for cockatiels on a huge scale. One is in CA and one is in IL (Western burbs of Chicago). If anyone is interested in these wonderful TRAVELING pets- google this and see who you might adopt. These birds are not extremely loud or as messy as large parrots and have huge personality. |
BuffaloGirl, I had a co-worker who was sitting at her dinner table when one of her kids spotted a rat snake on top of their tree.
Well, the mass murderer mail man is coming soon and I think I will put my dog in the house. I swear he trys to run him over when he charges up my driveway. I have talked to him before and he is not a very nice person and yes, he looks like a mass murderer! As for tipping mail carriers it just isn't done here. It would be embarassing for a carrier to accept a tip and I sure don't want to T him off any more than he already is. |
jorr - I know how you feel about the mail man.
I've been "pointing-and-clicking" too and for the last bunch of packages, my DH had to yell and run after the guy to get him to pick them up! |
Rave: perfect annual review and huge bonus, half-eaten by taxes! Another vacation subsidised!!
Rant: our building's elevator is not working due to heavy rains. Older people on the 6th floor feel stranded. Rave: dinner next week with the older son; we don't meet as often as I'd love to, but we meet too often if you ask him :) Rave: this year was my turn to get a X-mas present for the manager. Thinking of travels, I got her a carry-on. She loved it! And everybody's shocked how come a Jewish woman can be so good at picking X-mas presents :) |
FainaAgain, if your boss has a good sence of humor you could have put a fake one-way ticket to Siberia inside the carry-on.
|
Thank you, Jorr, I always struggle with April 1 ideas... putting a pile of used inter-office envelopes in somebody's in-box gets old after a while ;)
|
Rave: Used last day of vaction to stay home today from work and cookies are in the oven
Rave: Son #1 made it home from NYC Tuesday after walking 3 1/2 miles to his office lugging his bag and car service came thru getting him to LGA Rave: Son #2 is arriving STL from SAN at noon today Rave: NYC strike is over and DIL should have no trouble getting her flight here later today and she did not have to walk the 4 miles back and forth to her office Rave: Daughter and family that includes two darling grandson's will join us Christmas day Rave: 86 year old mum in UK despite short term memory problems was able to have a half way decent conversation with me this morning during our weekly phone call Merry Christmas to all and happy travels in 2006.
