At the risk of getting flamed, I'm going to have to say DisneyWorld (and Universal). I have school-age kids and they just love it. And if they're happy, I'm happy. We vary the parks and always drive down to Southern FL to spend a few days at the beach (to unwind from Disney!)

Traditions for us are: Disney World. I've visited since childhood and IMO no other theme parks compare. My daughter agrees.
Topsail Island/Surf City, NC. Terrific family beach. Quiet, uncrowded compared to other beaches and much less touristy, although million dollar beach homes are replacing the simpler cottages and hogging beach access. Again, grew up going there, so repeating tradition. Enjoyed Germany and would like to travel more in Europe, but slow to fly international these days and like to keep my money closer to home since 9/11. Enjoyed New Orleans on my honeymoon, not dying to go back though. Enjoyed touring CA by car in younger, wilder days (San Jose, San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Wine Country). Only San Francisco appeals for a return visit. Beautiful during Christmas holidays and the street cars are romantic. Had a blast bouncing over the same hump that was featured on "Streets of San Francisco", a favorite cop show when I was a teen. Good food. Don't quite understand the appeal of GA or of SC, and I'm a native southerner. Don't particularly care for VA, too many snotty people, but at least they have built tourism around something other than a war that never should have happened in the first place. Mostly remember those states as bigoted speed traps with dangerous backroads which unfortunately we had to cross in order to get to Florida, a kid's Mecca. I still rush through those two states on my way to FL! If you want to visit the South, try NC, which lots of people do. We've got beautiful mountains, wonderful beaches, great universities and sports teams, and a charming capital, even if our Governor is not so hot. Most want to visit: England Planning to visit this summer: NYC. Want to see Lady Liberty and my daughter wants to visit American Girl Place. My husband just wants to make it there and back alive. Subways/public transportation are definitely not our mode of transportation in NC. Guess that's why our pollution rate is increasing... |
Las Vegas, definately, great to go there for a few days and then check out some of the many national parks within close driving distance

Love this topic!!
We love returning to Maui! Been there 3 times and if I could afford it, I'd go every year. Other return places have been Disney and Las Vegas. People often criticize us because we enjoy returning returning to the same destination. |
Another vote for Las Vegas also Vancouver, BC.

To independencedaybaby:
You must have been to Northern VA, which you can't really call southern. I think the nicest people in the world live in Virginia. Try going to the mountains of VA. You will find true, genuine southern hospitality. A world renowned resort in Hot Springs, VA is The Homestead 1776 (and I don't work there)where you can play golf on of the worlds best golf courses, ski, skate, shoot skeet, bowl, a wonderful spa, etc. Come on down, (or up) we'll show you a grand time. |
It's been Las Vegas for ourselves and Disney for the extended family. I have probably taken my last trip to Disney and will not miss it.
Las Vegas has allowed us to relax from work (I'm not a beach or island person), and we have traveled out from there to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Death Valley, etc. |
Boston. Heck, the entire New England states.
Can never get enough of the Back Bay and never get enough of the Commons and Public Garden. Same with driving through the backroads of Maine and Vermont and the Mount Washington in New Hampshire. |
Virginia, "snotty people"- Huh??
|
I actually never get homesick for home--only for Greece.
And I'm fortunate to live in a place that many people think of as a retreat--southern Arizona. But in June we're going back for the fourth time to my favorite spot for spiritual renewal and sheer beuaty--Canyon de Chelly. |
Love returning to Maui every couple years. We have friends who live there so we stay with them a few days then go out on our own a few days. Also love return visits to Isla Mujeres for the fabulous Playa Norte, but really, REALLY love going back to Costa Rica. Just made my 9th trip and bought land so we can retire there! Yippee!

Have always spent at least 1 week in Tahoe every summer of my life. My kids prefer a return trip to Mammoth Lakes. Going there for the 5th time in the last 6 summers.

Yosemite wins hands down, followed closely by Amsterdam and NYC.
