:-? Hmmmm...
"I was going to RSVP to the invite for the Bird Watching Society but it said 'egrets only'".

What type of wine goes with Spotted Owl. It tastes just like a snail darter so I imagine a Pinot?

8-} HONK if you made it it thru Tuesday.

Having lived in the heart of cities & apt buildings all my life, I was used to seeing: rats, cockroaches and pigeons.

But recently moved to a house in a suburb in Dallas, last night saw an opossum in the back yard! Definitely the highlight of my week. I have never seen one except in zoos.

OliveOyl Jun 16th, 2004 02:05 PM

Congrats yk, and be thankful he was in the yard! During the period we lived in Plano in a 2 story brick house where the 3rd floor was the attic, we had a pair of possum who made our attic their home, and a lovely place to raise their babies. They were caught one by one with a have-a-heart trap until the last was gone. How they climbed the brick house we will never know, but we did spot them early in the possum capers leaving one evening for their evening stroll via the downspout!! An animal version of 6 Flags Over Texas? lol

When we heard noises a couple of weeks later we thought we'd missed one and put the trap back...a few nights later we found we'd caught a raccoon, and then we caught another! We had to get all these critters down from the attic via the trap door steps, through our bedroom then out the front door. The possums drooled and hissed, the raccoons stuck their little hands through the bars trying to undo the latch!!! I of course stood back and let my husband show me how brave he was. :D

So...if you start hearing strange noises in your attic....don't assume you have a prowler but do look into investing in a Have-a-Heart trap and a can of sardines for bait, with holes poked in the lid to let the smell out to lure those little critters into the trap.

OO-

Thanks for the heads up. I hope and pray that won't happen to me! I already have enough bugs in the yard to deal with (which are happily munching away everything I have planted).

bonniebroad Jun 16th, 2004 02:22 PM

OO, can't those darn possums get UGLY??? We have trapped four in the last couple of years............ my husband drives them to a lake, lets them go. Such ugly little creatures that I plan to ask the good Lord why!!!:-)

Yk, if you are lucky, you will never have one die under your house. UGH! You don't want to know the details............:-(

Of course, we have so many gorgeous birds and other creatures that I won't complain about the (o)possums..........

Scarlett Jun 16th, 2004 03:23 PM

Imagine, people hunt opossums and eat them:(

Cassandra Jun 16th, 2004 03:51 PM

Ah, but you haven't lived until you've had a (baby -- but even baby possums aren't cute) possum crawl up the dryer exhaust duct into the dryer and gotten trapped, flattened, and fluffed dry against the dryer drum! The dryer guy refused to go near it, the animal rescue people wouldn't mess with a dryer. Eventually a wonderful good samaritan that somebody who knew somebody knew came, took apart the dryer, extracted the dried possum, cleaned all with alcohol and reassembled the dryer. Not a part was left over (except the poor possum).

PS: This whole thread has had me humming .. "no egrets" ((8))((8))

Scarlett Jun 16th, 2004 04:02 PM

((8))~Non, Rien De Rien, Non, Je Ne 'egret' Rien~((8))

bonniebroad & Cassandra-

you guys crack me up! Now I'm gonna spend my days in the house wondering if I've got opossums in my attic, under my house, and best of all, jump out at me when I open my dryer!

My most favorite wildlife sightings:

Doe and baby deer on the walkway of my boat dock. They just looked at us, then walked off down the shore. (My lake house is named Blue Heron House since we see them at the lake all the time.)

An eagle with a snake in it's claws in the hills outside of Branson, Mo. It was a very remote area close to Big Cedar Lodge. You could see the snake slithering around and trying to get loose. The eagle carried it up to it's nest. Lunch Served!

We have an oilfield company. One day when a load of large pipe was delivered a small red fox came running out of the end of the pipe. Guess he didn't care for the truck ride. He lived on our property for more than four years, then left. He was very shy, but cute.

Also, my parents were visiting my uncle in Colorado at his new log cabin when a black bear decided to climb up on his balcony. They were sprinting for the front door to be sure! They said it was just a little to close for comfort!

I live in a high rise so there is not much "nature" in my "yard." However, said high rise is in Honolulu, so I often wake up to see a large rainbow outside my window.

I've been to Waimea Bay and seen dolphins frolicking in the ocean; while kayaking in Kailua Beach I had a sea turtle swim alongside me; and in the winter while jogging along Diamond Head you can often see pods of whales.

Olivy Oyl, loved your stories!

In our old house, my husband fell asleep on the sofa one night and was awakened by a noise in the kitchen.

He went out and saw one of our cats sitting on the window sill, with her nose pressed against the pane. On the other side was a possum, hanging upside down from the security grille. He watched the two of them just stare at each other, nose to nose, for about ten minutes.

The cat won this game of chicken when the possum up and left.

The eggs hatched! We now have two baby doves in one of the nests on our rain gutter. The other nest appears to have been abandoned.

My sweetie was away on a lengthy business trip a few years ago and would call me from wherever he was to tell me the events (or non-events) of the day. One morning he phoned quite early to say he had just been out for a walk and had seen a dead possum lying on the sidewalk. I couldn't resist - I said "Aha! You fell for it!"

kimamom Jun 17th, 2004 10:58 AM

Here in Astoria, OR there are deer walking around all over the town. One was laying in our backyard yesterday, just beautiful.

Late afternoon, a doe and two baby fawn walked through our yard. My son's GF is just amazed and takes lots of pictures of them. ***kim***

Meesthare, very funny !

Ants , congratulations! Does this make you a god mother of some bird sort? ((L))

ANTS430 Jun 17th, 2004 04:53 PM

Scarlett: As long as I don't have to feed or sit with the babies, I am ok with being a "grandbirdie"!! I will supply the bird seed, however.

OO-We store our boat inside during the winter. Last winter we had something crawl inside our boat and tear the plastic off the paper plates, toilet paper and munched on a roll of paper towels. The cupboards were all open and a set of tools and other stuff were scattered all over the cabin. No mortal mouse could have caused this much havoc. The marina manager said it was probably a raccoon. We are still trying to figure out how on earth it got into a locked boat.
