It's misty and rainy and the fog rolling about 30 feet so the woods are visible in the mist. A black crow speaks, waiting for a reply in the hush of the land. No one replies. The bird persists.

as I sit quietly in my home office, listening the the rain patter on the roof and watch the mist and fog dance with the landscape, I consider the wisdom of a pellet gun.

I just saw the season's first Canada goose goslings on the road behind our house, which runs around a city flood-control pond. They are a week later than last year, and we were getting worried that "our" geese had gone off somewhere else to produce their young. But then I looked out the window and saw the 5 little ones and the proud parents.

The pond is still home to a very large group of wood ducks.

Finally, the American goldfinches have arrived, in all their breeding-plumage glory. They feast on the niger-seed feeders, and one of the sparrows joins them.
