Just got back from a walk by the bay and the geese are swimming around with their new batches of fuzzy, funny looking goslings. Life goes on!

Scarlett Apr 27th, 2008 01:00 PM

Javelina are peccaries, no? lol at least they are not hanging from the feeders :@)

q, my daughter has a goose family that moves in to the green space near her office ( in Fl)
Every year she watches the Mama scare away anyone that comes near the nest, then she watches Mama take walks with babies..last year traffic had to stop while they all crossed the street .. this year, Daddy went after a car that was coming close to his kids and Daddy Goose got run over by the car.
So there is a widow goose with children in Fl if you know any single male geese ...

The ultimate sacrafice. I didn't see any single geese today. On our walks Martin tries to find the fattest one and starts talking about how he would prepare it.

I have a blue heron in my pond.

I don't think I have mentioed the Green Parrots in our parks. They fly down my street sometimes, in formation, squawking their little green heads off.
They especially like the tall palms in the park, so you can stand under them and expect to be bombed while walking your pup.

So far, they just sound like they will do it, none have actually done anything yet.

We also have palomas the size of large pigeons and they coo at 5 am...oy.

On our pond, we have Canadian Geese and the occasional loon. We used to have lots of mallards. One day I will tell you all the story of our duck that died in child birth!8}

iamq Apr 27th, 2008 02:38 PM

icee,
Have your geese started having babies yet? Aren't loons the birds with a very obnoxious song that sounds a bit like a braying donkey?

orangetravelcat Apr 27th, 2008 03:23 PM

Yes, javalina are peccaries. They're wierd looking but when they show up with babies, the babies are so cute. Then again, what baby animal isn't adorable?

TaxFreeTravel Apr 27th, 2008 04:10 PM

Aduchamp1, I'm still cackling at your reply-very witty! All I see in my back yard-1 hr outside of L.A. proper, are 7 stray cats at various times, bunch of brown birds, the odd escaped parakeet, the randomly passing flock of green/yellow parrots that we think are from Mexico and the nighttime raccoons & possums (finishing off the dried out cat food)...oh yeah, did I mention the black widow spiders?

How does one get Tax Free Travel?

TaxFreeTravel Apr 27th, 2008 11:35 PM

Good Question, starrs. email me at [email protected] & I will tell all.

I live in a 1920's neighborhood in town. I have a good bird feeder and get doves, sparrows, various finches, blue jays, cardinals. But my favorites are the woodpeckers. There are a couple different kinds we see often. I've even had a large pileated woodpecker in the yard at least once (think Woody Woodpecker-type bird).

A couple weeks ago, a wild turkey found itself in my 'hood and crashed through the plate glass window of a building across the street.

And very occasionally, a bear will wander into this end of town. I've never seen one though, just heard stories.

I have a tree that fills with these beautiful birds, rainbow lorikeets, every evening.

Does a black crow in my classroom count? It flew in through a window and stayed long enough to freak out some of my students and poop on a desk. It was a little creepy. I kept thinking of Suzanne Pleshette being chased down the street by them in "The Birds". LOL! I turned out the lights and we left the room for about ten minutes and it was gone when we came back.

Scarlett May 31st, 2008 05:54 AM

iamq, there are all sorts of creepy and depressing old superstitions about birds ( crows ) flying into the house or rooms.

Buy flowers and put them on the desk..

iamq May 31st, 2008 06:02 AM

Thanks Scarlett. Will smudging the room with sage work? The last thing I need is bad juju in that room.

iamq Jul 29th, 2008 06:00 PM

There are finches in my fountain!

gyppielou Mar 28th, 2009 11:43 AM

Oh how scarlett the cardinal is outside my window. And the Hawk nesting in the back yard. I think it is a cooper hawk.

iamq Mar 28th, 2009 02:18 PM

Hi gyppie, We don't have cardinals in my neck of the woods, but we do have peregrine falcons. I love watching them fly. A few weeks ago there was a really BIG bird sitting at the very top of the redwood tree next door. I wish I knew what it was. Could've been a golden eagle, but I've never seen a bird that big here.

Scarlett Mar 28th, 2009 02:33 PM

Aww. I love seeing this again ! :)
We have hawks , not peregrine but something fast and lethal .. in the parks. We saw a pigeon get hit mid-air one day.. wham!! feathers drifting down, the pigeon went on a little farther but it was a goner :( Hawks fly in pairs.. male/female...

Here are our Little Green Parrots ... noisy little buggars !
