Scarlett: In my family, it wasn't oppossum....my grandfather used to bar-b-que goats.
|
What is cabrito, does anyone know? I thought it was goat. It's on the menu of one of our favorite Tex-Mex restaurants in Dallas. If it is goat...I've eaten it too...it didn't taste like chicken :).
Jayne...you were a vision, I'm sure. (Not much less than I was 9 mos pregnant at a New Years Eve party in 1971, the year of the mini mini and I was not to be denied my black velvet mini! :) ) How did you get the possum out of the house? er...or did the dog dispose of it for you? |
Well, it's kind of our backyard..yesterday, being a birthday,we spent the day at Point Reyes. It was a stunning day weather wise. We walked out to Abbott's Lagoon past pastureland filled with cows. We saw brown pelicans, quail, red winged blackbirds, brown rabbits, swallows and hawks. This is one of my favorite places on earth.

OO,
Our neighbor (who we woke from a sound sleep) came over and took care of it. He brought and empty trash can, plopped it down on the top of the creature (naturally it was "playing opossum" pretending it was asleep). Slipped a board under the garbage can and that was that. He carried it out to the field between our houses and let it go. The entire process took 2 minutes from start-to-finish! Had to LOL at the mini skirt story. At least you weren't barefoot AND pregnant! By the way, am I talking to Olive or are you someone else OO? |
Sorry, I had to top this (even though I have read some fussing about egret postings...but there are some here who care about such things as.......
I have a Hummingbird in the garden!! \:D/ Jayne, you might be correct in that assumption :) |
Scarlett, is this your first one this year? I have them buzzing six feet from my window as we speak. I have beautiful yellow finches out here today........ so cheerful! Aren't we lucky?;;)
|
Yes! First hummingbird this year and first in Florida for us :)
|
Scarlett: Excellent! How many feeders did you put up? I have a similar sitution to bonnieb in that my feeders are about 2 ft. from the stationary
side of a large sliding glass door-we have house finches (red breast as well) gobbling their weight in sunflower seeds! R5 |
I hadn't put up a feeder yet, but had a plant of red tubular flowers by the french doors. It was one of those little iridescent green ones..his wings were mostly invisible he was going so fast :)
I put up the feeder after, it is a bottle that holds the nectar with a red dish under with 4 yellow ports for the birds to drink from. We have been having storms every afternoon/evening, so no little hummers today.. |
I recently put a clear feeder on the window in my office. I, too, R5 have finches eating their way through the seeds each and every day. They've built a nest in the rafters above the window.
It's great for me to watch and my clients are growing attached to the wildlife shows as well.No matter what the sorrow for any of us..there are those wonderful reminders life does go on in spite of us. |
Wow! I have a hawk story. While taking my morning walk, I went into a small cul-de-sac that's part of my walking route. About fifty feet from where I was turning, is, lo and behold, on the left side of the loop, a beautiful Red-shouldered Hawk, about 15" high, just sitting on a mailbox!
I was sure he'd fly away as I walked up my side of the street but he just sat there, watching me! I go around to the upper part of the loop, walking back down the middle, about 20 feet from him. He just keeps watching me, and I him. I leave the cul-de-sac, walk for about ten minutes, turn around, come back, go into the cul-de-sac again, and he's still there! I walk the very same pattern as he watches me, and I notice he's lifting one of his feet up and down so now I'm worried that he's injured. I walk about eight minutes to my house, my DH & I get in the car to go back, see if he's still there - I was afraid a cat would go after him but my DH says the cat may be the sorry one??? Anyway, when we get back to the cul-de-sac, he is no longer on the mailbox, but up in a nearby tree. I was SO relieved, as I was afraid he was hurt. Anyway, what a neat experience to have on this beautiful day in Raleigh!:-) |
In honor of this thread, I saw an opossum and three babies walking across the top of our fence this morning--all in a straight line just like ducks (oops I should have used an apostrophe). Even baby opossums are adorable! So that I could make a legitimate post, I thought about our trip to HI next month as they were crossing our fence.

We watched "Winged Migration" this week end and it is amazing! I highly recommend it to all you wonderful posters on this thread!
Happy Monday! |
WOW!!! I saw my Red-shouldered Hawk again today............ He must have staked out that territory, be watching some unsuspecting potential prey. What a beauty!:-)
|
I have a Disney movie going on in my yard right this minute. There are 2 young bucks, a doe, and 2 spotted fawns, all feasting on fallen plums.
As I watch, a fat robin redbreast lands in their midst. Lovely about the hawk, Bonnie. |
Marilyn, is your little Romeo cat watching from the window, tail swishing, not taking his eyes off them?
That is what my little cat would do when he saw squirrels or pigeons ((L)) |
Romeo is off at his "bachelor pad" (location unknown) sleeping it off. ((^))
|
Whoops, how did that happen? That was supposed to be ((@))

beachbum,
Were you holding or wearing someting red when the hummingbird hovered so close to you? Our Alabama hummingbirds really seem attracted to red. We have red coffee mugs at our camphouse on the river, and when we sit on the deck with the mugs, the little fellows love to come close and check them out. We've never had one drink coffee, though!
