You can watch it all live on CNN which has a continuous broadcast from a local Honolulu TV station

Thanks for the link, Auntiemaria.

<Local news is thankfully still reporting "no major injuries; no deaths".>
I SO want to believe that, but I have a bad feeling they don't know everything yet. I hope and pray the harm will be minimal. :-( |
8 minor injuries reported in Hawi, epicenter for the second quake.
|
Thinking good thoughts for you auntie and mat and mel and all in hawaii! Stay safe and watch out for rogue waves, as who knows how Pele will react to this shifting of her land! Hopefully tidalwaves will not be her recource.

mahalo sistahlou! haven't heard from Melissa, but Oahu is still powerless.
|
My DH and I left just yesterday from Maui and had a stop in Kona for our flight home to NH. This is really hitting us hard being there just under 24 hours ago. On our wonderful trip to Hawaii we did do a puddle jumper over to the Big Island for a day while there and asked Pele to keep us safe, guess she did. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are still there. Keep safe.

Aloha and a shout out to.... Icuy, Chepar, Pake and Anthony....and of course Dusty, for without Dusty they'd be no 3 pages of helpful links!!! Stay safe everyone! We are concentrating on your well being.
|
Dennis - glad to see everything is ok with you and other Fodors posters. I immediatly thought of you when I heard! So far they are reporting only minor injuries and NO fatalities - thankfully!

I hope Melissa is all right and will be able to post soon to let us know!!
|
matnikstym~ thanks for reporting in.. glad you are safe and no major damage.
((*)) I think you should admit that you had your margarita blender on and got carried away .. again...;) |
Glad to see all our Fodorites in Hawaii are checking in! Hope Melissa's power is up soon.
|
I just turned the news on - 6.6 and only inbound flights are allowed. People must be scared!
Maybe somebody has Melissa's cell phone number and try to reach her? Kal? Do you have her number? Who else is living/visiting? I hope everybody's OK. |
I heard that one or more bridges on the road to Hana are down. Any one have info about this?
I'm sooo glad it's not worse. I live in Northridge, so Cal native, so I'm used to the rockin & rollin but it's always unnerving. You're literally "shaken". My heart goes out to those dealing with it. |
Just heard they are finding LOTS of unstable ground. Telling people to stay away from cracks, holes, anywhere there are signs of disturbed earth.
|
I was watching CNN. Yes, there is some major road and bridge damage on the road to Hana.
|
I don't have cable but found out from my Mom and got to the internet to read honoluluadvertiser.com.
Hoping no one is hurt as the news stated and all Hawaiian Fodorites will be fine. Hang in there. |
Well, the power finally came on about 30 minutes ago.
I was sleeping when the first earthquake hit and I thought to myself "Oh, it's another earthquake". We had a small one about a month ago, and this one didn't seem too much worse, and I went back to sleep. I was actually more shocked to find out that the power was out on the entire island. What made it harder was the lack of telephone service and very spotty cell phone service. |
We felt it in the building where I live.
The building shook for about 30 seconds. No damage to our building, but some houses in Manoa Valley on Oahu & many on Big Island were damaged. Lots of roads on Big Island damaged. Hana Highway on Maui was closed because of boulders. We lost power on the entire island of Oahu. Just got our power back about 5pm, almost 10 hours after the quake. Oahu has restored power to only about 20% so far, so I feel lucky our area got restored. |
Our power just came back on about 30 minutes ago. We were jolted out of bed this morning when our building started shaking. Fortunately, other than the inconvenience of no electricity today, all's well.
