Earthquake in Hawaii

Just saw reports on Fox News about a 4.9 earthquake in the Hawaiian islands just now....my husband's parents are vacationing there now, and said you could definitely feel it. Very breezy and lots of rain right there right now (they are in Waikiki).....

Yep...got an early morning "jolt", along with my cup of coffee! :-)

Northshore Kaua`i we felt the first rumble...mild (dogs barked). Then came a bigger one (dogs went silent) right behind it. Two much smaller ones followed. Whole "swarm" lasted about 10 minutes.

According to this site:
http://www.myforecast.com
Hawai`i island started the whole thing, with a 4.6, followed by Maui with a 4.9, followed by a total of 8 aftershocks reported throughout the islands.

Having moved to Kaua`i from coastal California (and a lifetime of some really BIG shakers), today's event didn't even get me out of my chair.

Wow -- CNN just reported these were all caused by a 6.3 shaker off the coast of Hawai`i island...

The AP is reporting 6.3. That's pretty big!

I'm on the big island and WHOA! the first shake lasted about 30 seconds, didn't think it would end! i could see the house swaying and shifting so me and the dog ran outside, some things fell over, even the car was shaking! no damage though. aftershocks were mild.

I'm glad you're OK, mat, despite the scare. I'm sorry for all who were affected, but I can't help but feel glad it didn't happen last week when I was in Kona. We were in a 3rd floor condo so I would imagine the building swayed pretty badly. How horrifying for anyone involved.

I hope all of our Hawaiian friends are safe.

Oh dear, I just hate those earthquakes (grew up in LA currently in Seattle)!

My heartfelt wishes for everyone's safety and peace of mind.

Wow, that's a big quake. It is also centered about 15 miles from the airport, KOA. Anyone know if the airport is open or closed?

Power outages seem to extend to Oahu. Amazing.

trippinkpj Oct 15th, 2006 11:25 AM

The report I saw also said 6.3. I'm a native Californian, and quakes still rattle me.

Barbara Oct 15th, 2006 11:27 AM

The USGS also has it at 6.3, a strong earthquake.

Dennis, glad you and pooch are ok. FYI, it was just the rippling effects from our LA GTG smashing bash last night that made its way over to you finally! Sorry you missed it, maybe next time.

Best wishes for everyone's safety.

I read that people are stuck in elevators in Oahu due to the power being out. Yikes!! I too hope everyone is safe. That is a strong earthquake.

matnikstym Oct 15th, 2006 12:21 PM

we lost power for a short time which made it even scarier, not knowing what happened!

Barbara Oct 15th, 2006 12:57 PM

Now the USGS has bumped it up to 6.6. My son's supposed to be flying to Oahu tomorrow morning to work for a couple of weeks.

trippinkpj Oct 15th, 2006 01:00 PM

Looks like it struck between Kona airport and Waikaloa.

Andeesue Oct 15th, 2006 01:23 PM

Just got a cell phone call from a friend vacationing in Maui. All electricity out in his condo, but says the smaller 7-11 stores are open. Hope there's no major damage or casualties.

So glad to see mat has been posting here!! (I just emailed him concerned for his safety.) After Katrina, these natural disasters scare the hell out of me - it's the road to recovery that is pure hell sometimes. So glad it's not as bad as they're making it sound on the news! Stay safe. Pomaika`i! :)

matnikstym Oct 15th, 2006 01:46 PM

Kona hospital was evacuated due to earthquake damage, all airports are closed to outgoing flights due to power outages. All's well on this side of the island, some rockslides have closed some of the roads around the island. Mahalo for your concern!

The Honolulu Advertiser is now doing an excellent job of posting updates and detailed info on their website:
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ap....dll/frontpage

First jolt was off the coast near Puako; second one -- which was felt throughout the islands -- was off the coast of Hawi.

Local news is thankfully still reporting "no major injuries; no deaths".

cigalechanta Oct 15th, 2006 02:05 PM

CNN repoted that the Govenor has declared a emergency disaster.
