Chicago ICONS Altered
When traveling in Chicago, you may notice that the Picasso in Daily Plaza (is it a dog or an antelope or a lady???) is wearing a Sox cap. And the lions who guard the Art Institute are sporting huge black Sox batting helmets.
Do not be alarmed! This is not a hallucination. These icons will return to normal sometime in November. Go SOX! Houston, upon landing in your own field, I think you will be dealing with quite a serious malfunction! Yes, Houston, you have a problem! |
JJ5,
Your enthusiasm is infectious! I'm not much of a sports fan, and even if I hadn't lived in Chicago, I would have got the SOX fever just reading your posts. I don't watch the games, 'cause I believe I'm bad luck - all 5 games I watched during the season, the sox lost. So, I just get updates from friends and listen to the radio. I'm doing my part :)) Go SOX! |
I think that is halarious and it shows team spirit.
|
I also liked those painted cows a few years ago which were immatated in other cities. It shows a good sense of humor and people who do not take themselves overly serious.
Its those huge boulders in a row which are a bit overboard. Its looks like the artist was trying to keep cars off the grass. |
OOPS, raincoats were just added!
Another secret weapon, Chicago weather. It helped the Bears win today and its going to help the Sox tonight! A 45 degree "sprinkle" is just so invigorating for a World Series game! |
I feel that Picasso may be holding a broom soon- hands or no hands.
YOOOOWOWOWOOWOOWOOWOWO! |
swalter518 just reminded me. The horse rearing statue- they've put White Sox on the hooves.
|
Go Sox!
I hunted the internet for photos of these cultural icons in Sox garb but can't find any. If anyone comes across a url for them, let us know! Are the Greek-style women who serve as columns holding up the Museum of Science and Industry wearing Sox tee shirts? I remember seeing them in Cubs shirts years ago. |
Don't think so Orcas!
Try Chicago Tribune online or any Newsbank or Access World News database through your local library for pics. I'll try to find some and post an url. The Picasso is especially interesting looking. The hat has been on since last Wed. or Thursday already. |
Okay JJ5...hang on just a minute!
They are moving to Houston and EVERYONE here is psyched. They are going to put up quite a fight!! I'll stop now because I am apparently quite in the minority rooting for the Astros. (Come on, you have to root for them. They've never even BEEN to the World Series) :) |
Oh, I give them LOTS of credit. And it's never been in Texas before either.
What gauls me is the media attention focus. On nation tv, other than a lame Jay Leno joke, the only things you hear about are the share ratings of the World Series etc. Someone just told me that the odd makers have your team to win Tuesday. And as Yogi said, "It's not over till it's over." And I say that goes for most everything. |
I've tried to find pictures, but have found tons of articles sans pictures.
Regardless, they look awesome. And I have recalled my former prophecy of White Sox is six. I think it will be White Sox in five now. |
JJ5,
We're taking it tonight. :-d |
What about couple of the office buildings downtown?. One has SOX spelled out with lights on in the appropriate windows at night and the other has GO SOX.
I took pictures of the buildings after the Bears game Sunday evening, but unfortunately I had a little to drink at the game and forgot to set the camera for night shots, so the pics did not come out too well. I did see the horses with the socks and they looked great. I completely forgot about the lions so I didn't even look at that direction when passing by in a friends car. |
I'm counting on swalter518 to take the pictures. She said she did take the lions/Picasso/horses. I no longer take pictures of anything- just in my head.
She'll bring them to the GTG in Dec. AAFrequentFlyer- I bet you had quite a day Sunday. ISN'T it amazing how a Bears win always heralds a Sox win on the same day. It's voodoo! Hope you had your raingear on. |
What is Chicago going to do to celebrate when the Sox win?
|
Not much probably besides a nice parade, Orcas! The Mayor has said he is not going to do the sirens like his dad did.
The negativity from the other team's fans is so thick today you could cut it with a knife. In print, in person, and somewhat in live media- but less so within the Sports world celebrities. They are actually very positive and enjoying this elation regardless of former and present affiliations. Sour grapes is a real occurrence, let me tell you. Isn't keeping us from displaying here and everywhere! But I have had the pennants striped off my car windows already. My kind of town. |
AAflyer, here's the photo link that I posted on the World Series in Chicago thread of the lit up buildings. Glad you had such a great time!
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/photo?sl...01&prov=ap Let's go White Sox =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> |
The former Mayor Daley would have offered those sour Houston fans a trip out of town in a patrol car! I can hear him now, "If ya don't like do tout of da White Sox winnin', what are ya doin' here? Get outta town before we trow ya out! Now let's play ball!"
|
Thanks for the photo makai1! Keep 'em coming!
