Chicago GTG in December?

Input is welcomed by all.

How about one on December 10?

Some of us who seldom get downtown might get
some shopping in- plus see the Christmas window sights.

Calling swalter518, AAFrquentFlyer, Heather, chicagolori, exiled princess, jlm mi, Vittrad and tons of others.

I would LOVE to do tapas. Any suggestions!

Doing a search for rooms downtown and near Water Tower, I can get some REAL good ones right now. If I plan ahead -maybe I can make a 2 or 3 day Christmas shopping/ fun trip out of it.

If there are enough downtown workers among us, we might want to consider a weekday or after work on the Friday, Dec. 9.

I'll take off like Ferris Bueller.

Vittrad Sep 16th, 2005 09:10 AM

This could be fun

jlm_mi Sep 16th, 2005 09:23 AM

This sounds like fun, and I'd like to do it, but since I'm in Ann Arbor, I only make it in for weekend trips. So, don't count on me, but if it works out that I might be there then, I'll come. :)

ms_go Sep 16th, 2005 09:43 AM

I'm game. Or I should say we're game; my husband is also a Fodorite but I don't think he ever looks at the US board.

JJ5 Sep 16th, 2005 10:19 AM

I pretty much figured that it would have to be on the weekend.

Let's try to see how many can make it on Dec. 10.

And then we will see WHERE we can put us- depending on how many we are.

I know swalter518 likes Cafe Iberico. It would have to be somewhere noisy, I would think.

Trying for a daytime luncheon on a Saturday might be the best for winter.

Kal Sep 16th, 2005 10:33 AM

Chicago in Dec???

What next...Death Valley in August? :-O

I'll be back in one of my all time fave towns from Oct 6th thru the 12th for the Marathon so if anyone wants to GTG for a quick beverage of their choice, drop me a line.

Chicago in December is lovely, especially when you find yourself standing outside eating hot soup while snowflakes land on your head at the German Christmas Market during your lunch hour.

Now February is an entirely different matter.

JJ5 Sep 16th, 2005 10:52 AM

My daughter in law is running in that Marathon.

Have a good time!

Kal Sep 16th, 2005 10:54 AM

JJ,
I will. Mrs Kal's running!

V,
touche! ;)

JJ5 Sep 16th, 2005 10:54 AM

Oh that was funny, Vittrad- as I had typed nearly the same thing, but then I stifled myself.

swalter518 Sep 16th, 2005 11:24 AM

Is my love of Cafe Iberico that transparent?! I could do the 10th during the day but can't that night...I'll be 8 months pregnant so I'll be waddling but I'll sure try to be there!

JJ5 Sep 16th, 2005 11:59 AM

You know, I was trying to figure out if you could possibly make it, swalter518. And knew the later, NOT the better for you.

Yes, we will do it in the daytime for sure. Night is more difficult for a lot of us old foggies anyway.

My birthday is Jan. 11. I bet your due date is close.

swalter518 Sep 16th, 2005 12:05 PM

JJ, That's my dad's birthday! My due date is Jan 30. Hope there's no blizzard!

NanoPalos Sep 16th, 2005 01:37 PM

I would love to participate and the afternoon of the 10th of December would be great for me.

JJ5 Sep 16th, 2005 01:43 PM

Ok, very good. I bet we are going to get some SOUTH siders. Oh MY!

Well let's keep this at the top this weekend and occasionally. I've written these down and will continue to do so.

We'll take a count by the end of the month for a ball park figure.

I will be so happy to meet all of you!

ms_go Sep 16th, 2005 01:53 PM

Thanks, JJ5. You might catch some more people by posting this on the Europe board as well.

ssachida Sep 16th, 2005 03:48 PM

Hi, I''d love to be thereas well. I live in the city so I can help organize things as well. This is fun!

JJ5 Sep 16th, 2005 07:49 PM

ttt- so more people can see this during the weekend.

I'm keeping a list so don't forget Dec. 10 now.

I'll put it on the European board on Monday.

JJ5 Sep 17th, 2005 07:02 PM

ttt- in case weekend people are interested.

Kal Sep 19th, 2005 07:13 AM

ttt....just in case the weekend people are finally sobering up. b(

akm_tn Sep 19th, 2005 08:02 AM

jj5,

Put me down as a maybe. I'll be in town from Nashville on that weekend and will try to get away from my non Fodor companions.

Amy

SharonG Sep 19th, 2005 08:06 AM

I might have to come as well. Would love to meet more Fodorites.

JJ5 Sep 19th, 2005 08:18 AM

Great! We may have to have a LARGE gathering place/ venue.

pjsparlor Sep 19th, 2005 08:23 AM

ttt

JJ5 Sep 21st, 2005 07:55 AM

ttt so that Chicagolori can see it.

Welcome, if you can make it- please do.

Dec. 10 downtown daytime luncheon - possibly Cafe Iberico

swalter518 Sep 21st, 2005 08:45 AM

Cafe Iberico does have a party room too if we have enough people, and will take reservations for more than 6. See www.cafe-iberico.com.

JJ5 Sep 21st, 2005 08:54 AM

Great! Lets make it a possitive Cafe Iberico then. Maybe at 12:30!

I was going to look up the website a few days ago and see what times/options were available but didn't. I decided to wait and see if we would get much larger.

I have 9 already for sure and some maybe's- so regardless we will have our GTG at Cafe Iberico!

I've been to Emilio's but never Iberico and I am GREATLY looking forward to it.
My guy may come along and he is downtown resistant. But I bet he would love all the ladies. Mr go- he is great fun! He loved Italy and wants to go back.

swalter518 Sep 21st, 2005 09:06 AM

The more the merrier! Although my husband won't be there..he thinks we're a crazy cult (but never complains about all the places and tips I get off the boards on our trips!) :)

JJ5 Sep 21st, 2005 11:20 AM

I'll be there regardless of weather. Although I bet we have good weather sun on us.

I'll put this to the top next month and also on Europe.

If we are a crazy cult, Ken will fit right in. Just to get him to dress!!! Oh yes, it will be winter so he will have to wear long pants. LOL!

He's used to running ski trips for more crazies than you've ever seen. And he can fix anything as well. A great man to have on the scene all around.

JJ5 Sep 28th, 2005 07:13 AM

ttt

We have 8 who say "yes" and 1 maybe.

Dec. 10 - 12:30pm aprox. Cafe Iberico

FYI- I have done searches for room on weekdays Dec. 8-10 or over the weekend Dec. 10-11 for just fun, Xmas windows, shopping, shows etc. And the results have been fabulous, especially in the Loop designated area. Priceline and Hotwire are very friendly for this right now.

JJ5 Oct 3rd, 2005 08:05 AM

Just thought I would pass this on.

I just bid on Priceline and got the Hotel Allegro for two nights before the GTG gathering to go Xmas shopping and to see theatre. The price accepted was $76 per night.

If you bid on Priceline or do Hotwire- the hotel rooms in Loop, N.Michigan Ave. and River are all running GREAT right now for the GTG or any December events.

Hair Spray will be playing right downstairs from where I'll be staying.

makai1 Oct 6th, 2005 05:02 PM

I'll be there! Not sure about DH, but I'll let you know as we get closer. Sounds like fun! >:D<

JJ5 Oct 6th, 2005 05:33 PM

You're on the list!

Check the board within the three days preceeding Thanksgiving. Final count and all will be then.

Don't know if my guy will be there either. He may be on a ski trip. I think I might go to HairSpray too and make it a LOOOONG weekend.

KathyK Oct 6th, 2005 06:47 PM

JJ5, Just to pipe in, I won't be there since I live in Buffalo, but I visited Chicago last weekend and had a great time. I see that you are considering the Hotel Allegro, which is where we stayed. At $76 a room, I can absolutely recommend this hotel. Maybe it's not a 4 star hotel, but we found it to be a great place to stay, very clean, with very good service. I'm known to be a very picky person, and I thought it was a great place to stay.

JJ5 Oct 6th, 2005 07:29 PM

Thanks for the good word. I won the bid on Priceline this week so that I could do a little Christmas shopping and fun without haven't to spend 1/2 the day coming up and back. My train ride takes an hour plus it's LaSalle St. Station. I've been at the Cadillac Palace before but haven't been at any hotel in this section of the Loop- plus it's perfect for the kind of stay I'll be doing.

I'm also looking forward to some of the perks- like the 5 to 6 pm wine reception. The price sure is nice at $76. I'm pretty sure Hotwire has it for $94 to $110 as well, which is cheaper than the rack rate. By late Saturday afternoon I'll be ready to train back home after the GTG. If I purchase anything of size, I'll ship it. I think I'll do HairSpray on the evening of the 8th. I actually like downtown better during the weekdays. And a couple of days off at the end of finals week, will be greatly appreciated. Glad to hear that the Hotel Allegro is nice. I'm usually not keen on the huge hotels anyway- that's what I've gotten on the last two bids and visits.

aschie30 Oct 21st, 2005 09:57 AM

JJ5- count me as a maybe.

JJ5 Oct 21st, 2005 10:16 AM

You are counted in, aschie30. AND WELCOME!

I am so looking forward to meeting all of you.

I'm thinking about swalter518 today a lot for some reason, she is in VENICE Italia. OOOOOOH AAAAH! BUT she should be home in time for the game tomorrow night. Go Sox!

I hope we are 10 and all do make it.

Cafe Iberico sounds like it will be perfect for us, regardless of the size.

aschie30 Oct 21st, 2005 10:43 AM

Ah, Venice - what a wonderful visual.

makai1 Nov 9th, 2005 09:16 AM

MelissaHI Nov 9th, 2005 10:27 AM
