Well, it dates me too, lovemaui! AND, i enjoyed visiting the Ponderosa. Egads - she's a TOURIST!
4S Big Island - Heather Locklear - in the spa dressing room Hyatt Maui - Chuck Woolery Lower East Side Tenement Museum tour - Nick Nolte |
Starrsville,
When we're you at the Ponderosa Ranch? Did you know it's closed now? Lori |
Forgot that I also saw Nick Nolte at the Ihilani Oahu a few years ago:)
|
Nick Nolte,,, (sigh) he used to be so HOT! How did he look?
Lori |
He looked pretty decent, but that was before the well televised "bust" and subsequent rumors:)
|
I saw Richard Simmons also. This was back in the 80's and I was about 14 yrs old. He had done some kind of publicity exercise thing in Harrisburg which I was completely unaware of. My mom and I were shopping that night and he was leaving the mall. My mom recognized him and said hello. I was of course embarassed since I was a teenager and I must have scowled at her. Richard Simmons then told me that I should smile more because I was pretty. That was a very kind thing to say to an awkward teeenager.

travelinwifey:
yeah, I was picturing him with the Wild hair, in his mug shot, pretty scary! Lori |
Just browsing thru the latest posts. I found it ironic that 2 people were mentioned.
Robin Williams, who I have repeatedly told people that he is my alltime star I've worked for. He is the most kind, gracious, caring, genuine person who is humbled by his fans. So very different then those who are annoyed by their fans. Sorry ladies, but Tom Selleck is an arrogant, selfcentered oaf. I regret not telling him how poorly he treats people and the general public. I was truly dissappointed in his character. Ooops did I type that outloud> |
What do you do gyppielou??
I don't normally answer these b/c I see so many celebrities in NYC so often, but it's funny, the OP asked about <i>the islands</i>. I saw only 1 celebrity there and it was Drew Barrymore with whom GoTravel started this thread. She was standing outside (in the pouring rain) in front of an ice cream truck in Hanalei. |
Haven't seen any celebrities in the "islands" however I did spot a couple this past weekend on my trip out West. I saw Britney Spears coming out of a salon after having her hair done. The paparazzi was all over her! Then staying at the Wynn hotel I saw Dr Ruth! LOL..... She is about 4 foot nothing...couldnt believe how short she was. But was VERY kind and said hello whenever anyone approached her and signed autographs.

I grew up in Los Angeles, where celebrity spotting was a regular thing -- I even went to school with Michael and Marlon Jackson (for the brief year they went to my public middle school). Since moving away 20 years ago the only celebrity that comes to mind (outside of soap opera festivals where you expect to meet them) is walking past Paul Schaffer as he was coming out of Bellagio in Vegas.
DH and I think we saw Ray Liotta with his wife and kid at Disneyland (back in 2000) but we're not sure (and I didn't want to disturb their family outing to ask and start gushing). If it wasn't him it was another drop-dead gorgeous man with dark hair and intense blue eyes! Gyppielou -- glad to hear Robin Williams is as nice as he seems and as I've always heard he is. Sorry to hear about Tom Selleck -- I've always been a fan of his. Speaking of nice celebrities though, I met Roddy McDowall back in the mid-1970's when I was a shy, awkward teenager. I was (and still am, even though he's dead) a huge fan of his...fell in love with him at age 8 when I saw My Friend Flicka. I was walking around Century City with my best friend, not far from the hotel there, when I looked up and saw him standing close by. I timidly touched his arm to try and get his attention but he didn't feel it. The beautiful woman he was with caught my eye, smiled and got his attention for me. When he turned around, smiled at me and said hello I was struck almost speechless. Everything I had rehearsed for years that I would say to him went out my head and all I could think of to do was to stammer and ask for his autograph. My friend remembered all the things I had rehearsed and said them for me, while I just nodded and agreed with everything! I will always remember how sweet and patient he was with me, even fishing around in his pocket for a pen when I realized I didn't have one; and his smile and that wonderful voice of his...~sigh~...talk about your older guys though -- I think he might have even been old enough to be my (very young) grandfather! BTW -- it was only right after we walked away that I realized who the beautiful woman was who was with him....Elizabeth Taylor! |
We saw Jerry Van Dyke in a grocery store (well, Mexico, not Maui) and were rude enough to accost/gush at him (I love him from the early DVD days)--the nicest, sweetest man on the planet, I'm thinking, after his very gracious response. Not a megastar, but certainly puts up with being recognized a lot.
There are other sightings, but they were mean, except for William WArfield, whom none of you will know. |
um--by the way, no apostrophe in plurals--it's celebrities, and islands, not island's. (and why use quotes? and more than one question mark? and what about uppercase letters?)
|
Oh, dear, someone already went anal about the apostrophes--sorry about that. It's my job.
|
Sylvia3,
Yeah, I've already been called on my English grammer, but thank you. Lori |
We were staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu in 1994 for our honeymoon and they were filming a tv show called "One Waikki West"? or something like that and Cheryl Ladd was sitting in her chair. I accidently walked through their set without realizing it and heard someone yelling, "Lady, hey lady, get off the set." My face was red and not from the sun!
|
In 1995, we saw Arnold Schwarzenneger and Maria Shriver and their kids at the Four Seasons Maui. We actually saw them several times, usually at the pool, over the course of our stay. It was nice to see that people respected their privacy and pretty much left them alone. It was pretty funny, though, one day when he went over to pool and started yelling at his daughter Katherine to get out of the pool. Boy did heads turn! His voice is just so distinctive!
The comments on Robin Williams reminded me of another extremely nice celebrity. My DH traveled to California a few years ago and got to spend a couple of days on the set of West Wing. My DH does not get very excited over celebrities. He has seen several, met a couple, and has never even asked for an autograph. But he called me one day to tell me how he had just hung around the set eating lunch and chatting with Martin Sheen. He said Sheen was just about the nicest guy he'd ever met. He acted like he'd known DH for years, telling him stories about his sons and grandkids. DH said everyone on the set was very nice, but was most impressed with Sheen. I've got a great pic of him with one arm around Martin and the other around Rob Lowe. He even got to sit in on a first read-through of a script! And they gave him a copy to take home! |
We saw Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver and their kids in November '03 at the Four Seasons Maui -- right after he won the governorship of Caul-ee--for--nya. ;) He was wearing a Speedo. They were hanging out by the pool and now one really bothered them.

My Mom told me this story last night and I immediately thought of this thread...
My Mom worked with a woman about seven years ago that very much wanted to take a short trip to Vegas, but her husband did not want to go. She tried to talk him into it, but no dice (no pun intended) he just wasn't up for it. So off this little 50 something lady went, on her own, to Vegas. Once she got there, she started getting a little nervous as she had never traveled without her hubbie before. But she persevered, and down to the slots she went. After playing for a while she had good luck and won $500. However she started getting nervous because she was alone with all this cash. She decided to call it a night and take her winnings back to her room. Once she was in the elevator she was joined by two men, one very tall and quite large. After a long pause with no one doing or saying anything, one man said to the other, "Hit the floor" and the woman was so shook up that she thought they were talking to her and she actually "dropped to the floor." The two men, of course, started laughing, and they explained to this sweet lady that the one was merely suggesting to the other that he should "Hit the floor" of the elevator buttons that they wanted to go to and they no intention of robbing her. She in turn started laughing, apologized, and explained that she has never traveled without her husband before and that she just won money at the slots and was very nervous. The two men graciously offered to walk her to her room to protect her, she accepted and off they went all laughing. The next morning she went to check out of the hotel. The front desk had a note for her. It read, "Thank for the laughter. Best wishes, Eddie Murphy" and the front desk clerk informed her that her room had been paid for in full. I loved that story, thought you might to! Happy journey, Tiff |
That story is an urban myth:) It's been circulating Las Vegas for over 10 years now! Can't believe you know of the same story it too Tiff:) Hadn't heard that one for quite a long time:)

Hi Travelinwifey,
Hmmmmmmmmm, that is bizarre. I mean my Mom worked with the woman that this personally happened to, I wasn't there but I doubt that she would have any reason to lie to my sweet Mom. Never thought for a moment that someone would question it's authenticity, but I suppose she could have lied to my Mom, we all certainly fell for it if she did. I think it's kind of funny, I just told my Mom your response and she too, thought her co-worker would have no reason to outright lie. My Mom said, one of the co-workers even saw the note "he wrote" however, my Mom did not. Could very well be an urban legend, shows how gullible we were, ha. Sorry if I typed what may have been a false story. I guess pranks may not stop with the teenage years, ha. Best wishes, Tiff :"> |
I was in Vegas a couple weeks ago staying at Caesar's, where they filmed the final episode of The Contender, a program hosted by Sylvester Stallone. I just happened to get into the same elevator as he and his entourage one evening. He looks a lot bigger on-screen than off.

Tiff,
Here is something for you: http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors...onelevator.htm Cute story but not real. Sorry. |
How SAD is that?!? My Mom believed her, this woman in her 50's for heaven's sake, and I in turn, believed her too.
It reminds me of the other thread that was here before on meeting/seeing celebs long ago... my favorite one was about the lady that was traveling with small children, and having trouble with her bags, JFK, Jr. sent her over a porter to assist, he already tipped him, etc. I believed her too, and in my heart it will be true, she is a Fodorite, so I am sure it is true. Man, I loathe liars. :( The now discouraged, Tiff (Ha, j/k) |
Aw, Tiff, it's no biggie:) I believed it too unil I heard about 5 variations of the story. First heard it about 12 years ago, was like walking down memory lane to hear it again:) It is a cute story.

This one dates back 20 years. My DW and I were honeymooning in Hawaii, and were waiting for a Kauai helicopter trip in Princeville. A female staff member came over to us just gushing. We hadn't noticed, but Huey Lewis was waiting with a group (don't know if it was "the News" or not) for a helicopter ride at the same time. I took a picture, but didn't want to bother him during his vacation.
|
Well, I finally have one to report! I just returned from Hawaii, and while waiting for our connecting flight to Maui, my sister swears she saw "Hurley" from the t.v. show Lost!
Thanks everyone, for keeping this thread going. |
I once stood beside Mr T in the gift shop- complete with all his chains at a hotel in Toronto- also saw Dick Van Dyke there in the lobby.
and I sat beside Lori Morgan ( country singer) on a plane to Canada. I had no clue who she was but everyone was coming to get her autograph so finally I asked her who she was . |
Monday, I saw William "Mr. Vegas" Bennett entering the liquor store at 18th & I, NW in Washington at 11 AM. Pretty early in the day but it was pretty hot outside. Who knows, maybe he was going to buy some lottery tickets?
|
I saw Snoop Dogg checking into a hotel on Kuhio Avenue just last week. You can read the details in my blog, if you like. http://waikikiweekly.blogspot.com

I'm sitting right now at the fabulous AA LAX Flagship Lounge waiting for my flight to JFK, connecting to Buenos Aires. :-)
Few chairs down from me waiting for his flight is none other than Christoper Walken. He's one of my favorite "psycho character" actors. This is a 3rd celebrity I ran into at this lounge over last couple of years, but I guess this is LA after all. |
AA-awesome, thanks for sharing, if Jack Nicholson comes in you'll have reached your psycho quota for the day ! LOL ! ...
|
Hello,
We spent 8 glorious days on Kauai for our honeymoon last month. We saw Roseanne Barr at the airport in Lihue and turns out she was staying at our resort with her family. She looks good! |
A few years ago we went to Los Angeles for a weekend to look around. I had read in a magazine that Fred Segal's was very popular with stars so my husband and I went to have a look. While we were inside having a look we saw Geena Davis. I was totally flabbergasted. I could not get up the nerve to go and ask for her autograph. I also figured she would not want to be bothered as she was with her boyfriend who I did not recognize as being a celebrity. Seeing her just made my day!!! I was thrilled!!
|
Well the most celebs I've ever seen was on our trip to California on our Warner Brothers tour, 3 Tonight Shows and one tapeing of Friends.
Only actually run into a couple. Andy Dick walked by in San Francisco while we were waiting in line to get on a cable car. He was his usual self but nice to fans. I worked at a hotel in Durango, Colorado while in college and I checked in the Carradine (David and the one in the movie NERDS) brothers. David looked horrible. Just remembered that I also checked out Betty White from Golden Girls when I worked at another hotel in Denver around '99. She was such a nice lady. No Drew Barrymore for me... |
Just sat next to the British actor Bob Hoskins at lunch last Sunday. There's a million of 'em here for the Toronto International Film Festival but I have trouble recognizing stars unless they're 40 feet tall and on a screen in front of me.

<He was wearing a Speedo. They were hanging out by the pool>
that often happens with Speedos :) |
Alec Baldwin in 1998 at the Hilton Waikaloa Village concierge room. I was having breakfast when he walked in and up to the concierge desk and said, "I would like to check on my tee time". The concierge girl looked him in the eye and said; "Name please". He looked very offended and said loudly and with ennunciation, "BALDWIN". She gave him the time and he stomped out of the room. His brother Billy was there at the time. He approached 20 something, bikini clad girl who was working for the sand sculpture in celebration of "Dolphin Days" at the time. He indicated that he and his wife found her attractive and would like her to call him when she got back to California. She was quite offended but didn't know quite how to respond to a guest.
