A co-worker saw Mick Jagger in Mustique. Very private area.

Lex1, I may be wrong about which Cardinal I saw in the airport. At the time, both Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee were big stars on the team. I saw the one they called "ET"-- was that Willie? And was it Ozzie who did the flips, or Willie? They were both fabulous and it was so much fun to be a Cardinal fan when they were playing.
|
I once saw Dennis Eckersley (sp) at SFO, while waiting to leave for Hawaii. It was after he'd retired from Baseball. Still exciting.
|
Forgive me but....
I don't get all the gushing. The following these people around in circles. The nudging and pointing. The autograph seeking. Have you no sense of self worth? I have been close to a very few celebrities...mostly in Vegas and always felt like they deserved to have their space just like anybody else. I don't get it. |
This isn't exactly a celebrity spotting and didn't take place in the Islands but instead is a case of being mistaken for a celebrity. In October 2004 a friend and I were in China and spent the last part of our trip in Shanghai. About a week before we arrived in Shanghai the NBA played a or some exhibition games in Shanghai, Gao Ming's hometown. My friend is a very tall black man, and I am convinced the local people thought he was an NBA player. On our first full day in Shanghai everywhere we went, heads would swivel in his direction, people would elbow each other and point him out, and a couple men even videotaped us (well, really him, I just happened to be there) when we were walking along the Bund. No autograph requests; maybe that isn't done in China. Now, my friend is an extremely handsome man but has never before had quite that reaction! He was quite laid back about it (no Sean Penn imitation), and I enjoyed it immensely. I am certain that this is the closest I will come to dating a celebrity.

placeu2 - Sheesh, what a killjoy. If you don't get it, why read the thread?
cmcfong - I burst out laughing at your Tom Selleck story. Too funny! |
place2, I didn't really see anyone gushing on this thread and my sense of self worth is certainly in place:-D
travelinwifey, I know this is a shallow question but is Pierce Brosnan's wife a little on the chunky side? She's very beautiful but she looks that way from the chest up and I was always curious. |
I also have seen Kris Kristofersen in Nashville. Got on the elevator with us (weekend event with my sisters). We were at the Marriott which was relatively new at the time so it was probably about 1979 or 1980. When the elevators doors opened and he walked on..all I could say was..."Look, Jean (punch in the rib)Susie(punch her in the rib from my other arm)..look, please look who it is". I think he smiled at me.
If I saw Pierce Brosnan or Tom Selleck or Robert Redford, I would have the big one, Margaret! |
This is not about the islands, but about Washington, D.C. when Bill Clinton was president.
I was walking on a side street outside the Capitol building. There was a black limo driving slowly past me. The back window went down and there was President Clinton waving to me. Does this count? |
Yep, it counts. Thank You!
|
Once out west I spoted a rumble close to the gate, I got there just in time to see Richard Simmons
slaping around some guy twice his size. What a beast! Decided not to ask him for a autograph as that might have been the big guys mistake |
Oh, and I forgot..mine must always happen at elevators..Once while I was walking up to the elevators at The Omni in Atlanta, there was a crowd and I thought there was a malfunction...but, alas, it was Ted and Jane going home to the penthouse.

oohh I love this topic -- :)
We were in Chicago in mid-March. DD and I were shopping in Urban Outfitters. The saleclerks started to get giggly and excited -- I asked one young lady what was up -- and she replied that Nicolas Cage had just walked in. DD didn't really know who he was, but I naturally wanted to hang out in this particular store for awhile longer! We didn't approach him (too shy!) but observed how nice and polite he was with everyone. Later that same night -- at the Jofferey Ballet -- we were two rows behind Ethan Stiefel -- a principal dancer w/ American Ballet Theater who was in the movie "Center Stage." My DD was thrilled -- and bravely introduced herself and got his autograph. Two celebs in one day -- fun! |
Hi GoTravel, yes, his wife was a little overweight around the hips. She is attractive, but next to him she seems a little frumpy. I refrained from commenting about her as it isn't the nicest thing to say I guess....:) And she was dressed normally in a sundress, not overly expensive clothing. No designer handbag lol:)

When we saw Michael Caine who was staying at the same hotel as us in Ireland we went out of the way to AVOID him, very arrogant. An 88 year old woman asked him for a photo and he said no, I could't believe it. At he was always in the hotel's common areas, I guess he wanted us to stare at him. Anyone that turns down granny is no good in my book:) Not that any famous person has to give an autograph, but this was a special case.
|
I think Keely Shaye Brosnan is a beautiful woman. (Consider the following photos.) Glad to see not everybody in Hollywood has to be a shapeless toothpick!

I saw Kevin Costner at the bar at the clubhouse at Pebble Beach. One of my friends introduced herself in a gushing manner and he was very nice.
I used to be a ball girl then water girl at a professional tennis tournament for many years to I've met all of the recently retired players - even hung out with some of the less famous ones. As a water girl I sat in their chair while they played then gave them water during breaks. I think my favorite (because I was a star struck teenager) was Andre Agassi. As a preteen I managed to wander off w/Stefan Edbergs jacket (he left if behind after a match) and he sought me out in the ball girl tent - I convined him to literally give me the shirt off his back (which he signed) in exchange for his warm up jacket. Ah, memories!! Sorry, none of this was on the islands but I couldn't resist chiming in. BTW, I think questioning others as to their self worth is more a sign of low self esteem (putting others down to build yourself up) than having fun sharing harmless stories of being star struck. |
Oh, I forgot. I also saw Richard Simmons....wow wee!!!! LOL
Anybody remember him on General Hospital? |
I remember him,,,,, does that date me??
Wherever did you see him? : ) Lori |
while not the islands, i've seen a bunch in nyc when i lived there.
george clooney sat at a table behind us at china grill. i was walking into the park for my run one evening at W 86th st and robin williams was walking out, having finished his run. he was so friendly, he initiated a conversation, said hello and we commented on it being a nice night for a run. no one else was around. he had a full, full beard and long hair at that time. meg ryan and dennis quaid crossing the street on the upper east side. i stood in line behind rob morrow at the whitney museum for some big exhibit. i was walking into bloomingdales as paul schaffer (letterman sidekick) was walking out one day. i went to a good friend's party at her apt one night and a guy walked in. i instantly thought i knew him but couldn't place it. it was dan abrams, the legal consult on nbc. it was right after the oj trial, so he'd been all over the tv. though not much of a celebrity, nice guy. oh, and dh pee'd next to bono one night at a restaurant. he kept his sunglasses on. that is all that comes to mind right now. |
Last December the big kahuna was at the Four Seasons in Maui, and the big kahuna saw the most famous celebrity of all! Can you guess who it is? Click here to find out...

Can't see it without logging in.
|
Travelinwifey, I have to say I found your reference to Pierce Brosnan as an "older man" somewhat depressing as he's my age!
|
Maggi, I agree KSS is a beautiful woman and don't have issues with her weight. I was just curious as to her size.
|
This didn't happen in Hawaii but the U.K. IS an island! ;-)
I have a Queen Elizabeth/Prince Phillip sighting. Back in 1998, we went to Westminster Abbey to tour it and found the place mobbed with camera crews. Turned out the Queen and Prince Phillip were going to be there in a few hours to dedicate some new statues of martyrs. We waited at the fence for two hours when they finally arrived. Some royal aides came up to the fence and told us all to clap. I thought it was hilarious that they felt they had to tell us to do this. She was in matching purple hat, dress and shoes. Got some great photos. They went straight inside. At least some day I can tell my future kids I saw the Queen! |
When we stayed at The Maui Prince Gwen Stefani and her band No Doubt were staying at the hotel also. Now I say that I hung with rock stars at the pool.
|
Sorry Gardyloo. The Big Kahuna just fixed the problem. Go to this website to see a picture I took of the most famous celebrity ever to appear in Maui, at the Four Seasons on Wailea Beach this December!

Just saw this thread. We were in Matzalan Mexico. At the Pueblo Bonito. All of a sudden one day it appeared most of the guest were being ushered from the hotel with their luggage. Not a happy looking group. My DH asked the desk clerk what was going on. He was told that the next day Pres.Reagan was arriving to Matzalan. He would be staying at the hotel next to ours which had an open lot between the two hotels. Think the hotel where the pres. was staying was the Westin, can't remember.
Anyway, we were told they we and another couple were not going to have to vacate our rooms. Both my DH and the other gentlemen were retired military officers. About the same time the Mexican Marines arrived on the beach. The US Marines arrived at our hotel. Navy Seals were in the water offshore and Mexican ships were in the water. Strange times! That night we were asked not to leave the premises. No problem as the restaurant there was great. So we were given a table on the terrace. We ordered wine and all of a sudden the waiter sort of punched my DH in the ribs and said "stand up!" So we did. The President of Mexico (Salinas) came in with his troupe of people About a dozen of them. They sat at the long table in front of us. All men except for a beautiful women (who we learned was the assistance of something?). Dinner was served to us, the other couple and the presidential party. After dinner we went out by the pool and watched the young US Marines frolic in the pools like a bunch of teenagers. How young they looked out of their uniforms. The Mexican Army patroled the beach, we were not allowed the leave the premises. The next morning their was a knock at our door. The darling hotel maids. They indicated that we should come out on the hallway that overlooked the street beacause President Reagan was going to arrive. By car, by helicopter no one knew. The street was completely closed to traffic. So, without a shower, we went out on the open hallway. My DH went into the kitchen and made us BloodyMary's. I was in a sundress, barefoot. Their were US Marine's stationed at each end of the hallway, but we were not bothered as long as we did not try to leave the hallway. Discussions were that at the next hotel that all employees were told they could not work at the hotel while Pres. Reagen was there. A big insult to the Mexicans, which we sure understood. So we stood on the open hallway, waiting to see what was going to happen. Drank BloodyMary's and talked to the darling maids and the other couple that had been allowed to stay in the hotel. All of a sudden US helicopters appeared. About 5 or 6 I believe. Then the one with Pres. Reagan. The helicopter was so close that we could see his face. He waved with a smile. And thought "oh my, here I am in a sundress, barefoot, drinking BloodyMary's at 10:30 in the morning". Then of course more US helicoptors followed Pres. Reagans helicoptor. US military was awesome. Made me realize how other countries view us. That night the President of Mexico (Salinas) was back at our hotel. We had found out that the owner of the hotel (not sure if it is now the same owner, probably not) was very good friends with Salinas. Salinas had a few beers. Then he and his entrouarge left the terrace and walked through the lobby. And got on a nice bus and left for Mexico City. Before he left he shooked hands with all the hotel employees and us and the other American couple who was allowed to stay at the hotel. What a difference, how the president of Mexico arrived and left and how our president arrived and left. It was a couple of interesting days. |
LoveItaly :
The was very interesting, and something you'll never forget! What an experience. This is turning to a pretty cool subject, Thanks to all of you! Lori |
LoveItaly: Wow....what a story!!!!
My aunt "received" President Reagan in her home several years ago. The building she moved into (here in Buffalo) was the first senior citizen complex funded by the federal government. The prez was there for the ribbon cutting and she was chosen as the resident he would visit in her apartment. She made some Italian cookies for him, but he wasn't allowed to eat them. Oh well, we have a wonderful picture of the two of them holding hands and smiling. (I know, not travel related). |
Hi dear Fodorites, and of course I should have clicked on the "Prview My Reply" button and then clicked the "Edit" button, so I could have corrected my spelling. I do know how to spell, honestly, but I am not the world's best typist.
Yes, it was an experience I always said I would never forget, but guess in a way I did until I read through this thread today. Keep in mind, we went to Matzalan, the Pueblo Bonita for three weeks as we were completely burned out from our business, elderly family members etc. Think we were there for about a week when this happened. I felt "honored" at the time that we were not told we had to leave the hotel. It was quite an experience. And in a way a tad bit scary, not because of the US Marines but because of the Mexican Marines patrolling the beach, the Navy Seals, the ships just offshore etc. But it was fun also. An adventure! And then some years later it turned out that Salinas ended up living in Ireland and his brother was arrested for fraud or something. And did you get the "assistant" comment. She was really beautiful btw. LOL. This 3 week trip had more adventures, it was amazing. But won't bore you with the rest of the vacation. Take good care my Fodorite friends. |
Buffalo Girl, oops forgot to comment on your post. Pres. Reagan evidently did not eat anything that was not prepared by "his people". That was the negative and upset regarding his being in Matzalan. The chefs at the hotel on the other side of the vacant lot from the Pueblo Bonita (where his helicopter landed) had evidently originally planned a fantastic dinner for him and Pres. Salinas. And then they were notified that NO, that was not possible. That a chef from DC would prepare the dinner that night. And the hotel staff were evidently replaced with DC people. So all the employees of the Westin ,I am almost certain it was the Westin, when you face the Pueble Bonita it was on the right of it with at that time a huge vacant lot in between. The staff at the Westin had evidently bent themselves backwards so to speak to serve a very special dinner for our President. And then the were told they could not even be in the hotel. A big insult. The Mexicans were crushed. And guess your Aunt had the same experience.

Aw Caph52! Sorry! To me "older" would be > 12 years of my age:D And I married an older man! But Pierce could be my Dad. Guess that makes him a DILF B-)

All of my celebrity sightings have been on Maui. Several years ago, I actually talked to Eric Clapton - the thrill of my life! Also heard a spontaneous concert under the Banyan Tree by Willie Nelson & Kris Kristofferson one year. Most recent sighting was Jerry O'Connell with some friends - saw them several times - he is the nicest guy - even took picture with my son-in-law. Also saw Jeff Gordon (NASCAR driver) that trip.

mauigirl50~
WoW! All on Maui, huh? Lori |
Last year I was in Manhattan for lunch..I was in a cab around the ABC studios building. I happened to look out the window and I saw a tall man with white hair from the back....I must have been a half block away but I knew who it was....My favorite daytime guy David Canary aka Adam Chandler! As the cab drove by I opened up the window and yelled....I love you David! He looked up and waved back at me....he must have thought I was crazy, but it gave the cab driver a big laugh!
Even though he was half a block away, I would have recognized him anywhere he stands out in a crowd. |
Annabel~
I just finished watching him on AMC... Very Cool! Lori |
to answer luvmail's question. I saw Richard simmons at a Womens Show in Lansing, MI. I was a Sales Director for a hotel and we had a booth and he was walking around. Talk about high energy.
Don't worry. Knowing that Richard Simmons was on GH does not date you too much. If it does, then it dates me too. LOL |
Okay Annabel - and others...
How many remember David Canary from Bonanza?!?!? |
Hey Starrsville,
I do, I do, remember him from Bonanza! In fact growing up here in Northern Nevada, we used to go to the Ponderosa Ranch for visits in the summer. They actually filmed there the last few years, the show was on the air. My older sister and a cousin, used to have HUGE crushes on "Candy" his charactor on Bonanza, and they swear to this day they saw him there walking across the parking lot!! So yeah, we remember him,,, and it dates ME! Lori |
