I still remember our days living in the Aleutians(Alaska peninsula tip).. we'd routinely have winds anywhere from 10/15 mph up to exteme storm driven winds of 80/90/ even 100+, where aluminum would fly like Persian carpets, roofs would go sailing, small dogs impersonated frisbees, well, you get the idea. And hey folks, our small commuter kamikaze pilots would fly us in and out over a mountain pass to get to the bigger airport in some of the worst conditions you can imagine.
No one ever reported it, they were cold centered, vs. warm weather hurricane/typhoons, so no big deal. But we had CNN reporting on century disasters, with the poor shmo on the beach in Malibu or Florida, barely able to stammer that it was up to 50 mph, and those big waves, oooowee. Meanwhile, helmut hair blondie is sitting in the studio(visions of a fireplace and a big fluffy towel to help dry out poor "stormboy"). |
Wantsomesun, hope that's it for the winter for you guys, or at least before we hit NYC on February 18th! I'll bet this puts a big crimp in construction plans for "The Gates" project.
JJ5, Chicago last weekend was pretty brutal for us, and we're Michiganders and used to this weather. Just finished shoveling at least a foot of snow here and it's still coming down. Maggi |
Nothing but freezing rain here in Williamsburg, VA. All our snow is melting away ... I'm envious of those of you with your treats, fireplaces and the fluffy stuff at home. I'm stuck inside with two sick, snotty-nosed kids and this cruddy weather! :)
|
I'm not always glad I moved to Florida 19 years ago, but this is one of those times! It's 65 right now but due to drop to 29 tomorrow night!
|
It has snowed about 3" so far in NYC, though it's hard to tell exactly because of all the blowing & drifting. Visibility is 2.5 blocks.
I just went out in it to get a slice of pizza & some supplies (juice - because I have a cold - and mallomars). I LOVE the fresh snow here...it's so clean, and it dampens all the noise making it VERY quiet outside (even with all the traffic and the subway trains rushing over the bridge). My boyfriend hates the snow. He is hibernating in the bedroom. I expect he'll wake up sometime next week. |
Poor Mike Sidell. He's either in the middle of tornados, hurricanes, thunderstorms, blizzards, ice storms, freezes, etc.
Jim Cantore used to have that job but then he started hosting Storm Stories. I met those guys at a golf tourney and they are really nice. I suggested they maybe get that nice Mike Sidell out of the bad weather. |
here's a little snow treat, and I'm totally serious. Use some fresh snow, add a bit of vanilla, milk and cocoa if you want chocolate, and voila! snow ice cream. When I'm really naughty, I've added french vanilla coffee creamer, totally yummy, and less gulit laden than wine after wine.

Well, we've got a little over a foot of snow and it's still coming down and blowing around a lot. The temp is -17 celsius, which I just converted via some website or other to about 1.4 Fahrenheit, except that with the windchill it's -27. This did not stop me from going to the hairdresser this morning - hey, it was a crisis, okay?

Well, it's here. Just outside NYC and fine snow is swirling in circles, and total whiteout conditions. I ran my usual Sat errands and beat it home just minutes before the snow plows at 2:30. So what's cookin'? Sipping Cuba Libre and niblbing strips of fried corn tortillas ans salsa- almost a theme, started because I am warming up some spanish rice & camarones en salsa verde - shrimp in green sauce, as I make an antipasto of long raw hot green peppers stuffed with anchove and slices of raw garlic, and then bottled in veg. oil for later tomorrow.
Novels are stacked by the bed, books on cd, a holiday cookie tin now filled with travel idea clippings from this fall. And if all else fails, a to-do list of home improvements. The cat has just returned from her periodic check on the snowflake activity, We have about 2-3 inches. Everyone stay warm & cozy and safe! And enjoy a little slowdown in our usually busy weekend. |
Meesthare! I did the same thing today, minus the measuring of snow :)
It was just as chilly indoors though, it is not that hot here today (FL) but the a/c is on high in the beauty salons! Stay warm & snug everyone in Fodorland! |
Here in Boston, the snow just started about an hour ago, and there's already a noticeable amount on the ground. 14 degrees. I'm making brownies.
|
Scarlett, how does it feel to be with us on THIS side of the blizzard?
I hope you all stay warm and enjoy the snow. Good thing it is a weekend and it won't impede on too many plans. |
LOL ~ my DH says, but a moment ago, "We should into the city and see a show tomorrow!" He's like a kid when it snows and I feel bad, I sort of laughed at the idea.
We're supposed to get 18 to 24 inches, we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if it is possible. I'll check back for a NYC report :) |
Just took a drive around the neighborhood....the snow is accumulating fast! It looked like there was a good 4 inches on my vehicle. Everyone is out playing in the snow...I see a lot of idiots pulling their friends by a rope from the back of their car...not too smart...
The eating of snow is a bit scary for me, but it did give me a great idea to use it in my caviar dish instead of crushing ice - which I am about to do in a moment. It's almost an hour past cocktail time, and the fire's getting low. Cheers everyone! Stay warm and safe and get out and have some fun in the snow:) |
GoTravel, it feels weird~
I used to love snow and a big storm was fun (for a while).. of course, I was not the one having to go out in the snow to work or the market etc. so staying in the house snug and warm and baking chocolate chip cookies during a snow storm was not a bad way to spend a weekend. But from here, now- it is not bad.. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the snow and not have problems from the snow. I hope someone sends us lots of photographs! How about that? FodorFotos of the Blizzard of 2005! |
In Vermont, it was a treat for us kids to run out to the sugar shack with a bread tin of snow and pour maple syrup over it. That snow was pristine, I don't do that in the city any more than I would pluck off an icicle as a popsicle.
Very funny, Patrick and hat's riught Scarlett you rub it in,,,but I'll be making snow angels tomorrow morning! never too old :) |
Well here it goes guys, it looks like old times. The thing stalled and is heading back for a second turn. We have 12 inches already and about 6 more until 1 or 2am. Party has been moved to the neighborhood after all as visibility is nil.
It's official. Sister Inviolata has just announced that "due to inclement weather all will be allowed to wear tights instead of regulation knee high wool socks tomorrow." I should dig out the old pictures of my two oldest standing on the "front lawn" and touching the roof in '78. Or the the one of my Dad and me mid-city Chicago in '68. My white go-go boots and mini-shirt were quite stylish. I walked from Archer/Halsted to home (about 5 or 6 miles) that Friday night and buses were over-walkable like beached whales. We actually ended up digging cars out of our park for days. Cured me of mini-shirts forever. My father made so much overtime on the salt truck that year, that we all ended up going to Europe to see his family. I bet my daughter and grandsons start showing up via sled pull by tomorrow as she has never been snow/housebound with two toddlers before. HA-HA-HA I raise a toast to all the cops, firemen, sanitation workers, emc's, nurses and all who have to be out tonight all over the USA with such interesting weather. Looks like old man winter is going serve you a feast that only you can be strong enough to eat. Keep the wind at your back. |
((D)) Here here!
|
JJ5- I'll toast those hearty workers, too- love your glass Scarlett. And I'll keep a good thought for the safety of all those landscapers who supplement their summer work by doing snow removal in the winter. At least, the inclement weather benefits someone!
Per the news, Broadways shows continue tonight, but anyone who feels they cannot make it should be able to exchange dates by contacting their point of purchase. |
It's started here, We have been below freezing for over a week. I remember the last time it was this cold, I actually walked across the Charles River. The private school hockey team was playing and assured me it was safe. Looking back, I can't believe I did it!!!
