Who's going to operate the Snow Thrower...??? Not me - LOL...my poor husband does that ...he also does the entire block - not just because he's a great guy, but he gets invited in for cocktails at the neighbors houses. The thing I love to do is to walk the dog in the palces he has not plowed yet and let the dog leave a hot steamy in the snow for his beloved snow thrower - now that's entertainment:)

All right Annabel you must live further north than Indiana.
That's some kinda tweaked thrill you have going there with the pooch's surprise and a snowblower. :-) |
Bread and milk? I stocked up on Cabernet, Grey Goose, Shrimp, Brie, Lobster & Crab, Cukes, Salsa, Soup, Veggies, and bottled water.
Setting up in Cape Cod area for 20+ inches. We are going to drink, eat and be merry while watching good movies and football playoff games. |
Your poor husband? LOL.
I was down in Baltimore on travel when a freak snow storm hit. My wife called me up, and I had to walk her thru snowblower operating instructions. I laugh everytime I think about it. ((a)) ((b)) |
I heard 12-15 here in Union, NJ just west of EWR.
Budman, Tony will come down and blow you out if you want...(he loves anything mechanical!) Plus we just inherited a new snowblower from his folks who just retired to a place where that service is "included"! It's all gassed up and ready to blow! I hit Trader Joe's this afternoon for some wine and snowstorm goodies...let the flakes fly! |
Hey, we need some of that snow bad in Northwest Montana!! We've had rain the past few days and I can see my lawn. Send some our way. Skiing is getting tough---spring skiing conditions in effect!! |
We live on Long Island, NY.....
It's ot about the dog crap, but mroe about the reaction when my DH plows over it PS he has now idea it's from his dog, he thinks its the neighbor's. Its actually pretty funny...I do it every year:) |
Gene, I'm coming to your house. Go Pats!! ((b))
|
Well Gene you'd be safe shopping here. You'd be alone in the "fancy food" aisle of an Indiana grocery store during a severe weather warning. :-)
BTW the snow (3 to 6 inches) was supposed to start late here. 10:30pm isn't late? Still no snow here in south central Indiana. |
Trish, thanks, but mine's all fired up and ready to go. Did I forget the gas this year? LOL ((b))
|
I'm almost envious with these descriptions of stocking up with goodies, hunkering down for the big Arctic blow -- what'd they call it? Whatever, it sounded ominous. Jeez, what happens if you lose your electricity and you can't drive your car cause you're snowed in? Do you just drink away to forget about it, go into a state of hyperthermia? I suppose this is one of those times when layering comes in handy.

Alberta Clipper..or the Arctic Express :)
We always made sure we had lots and lots of firewood . If we lost power, we could at least stay warm and sleep by the fireplace. We had gas stoves so we could still cook. It was an adventure. We used to lose power more in the summer when we needed a/c the most, not in the snow. TG..you have never lived in the North? |
Tandori, when we loose electricity we fire up the generator & the gas fireplace and invite our neighbors over for a party!
Usually we don't loose power from snow. I think further south the ice storms weigh heavy on the power lines... |
My snow experience seems so tangential.
I lived in DC for 18 months. I took this job and they cajoled me by telling me it NEVER snows in DC (1979). That year they had the worst blizzard they'd ever had. I thought it was mild because they'd told me it never snowed, put my new cool boots on and started out the door. I got about ten feet out and thought, no way I can move in this weather. I was working on "the hill" and lucky I could get into those underground subways or I'd never have gone to work. Then I worked in NY but commuted every wknd. to FL. It was the year of 9/11 and it was a wonderful almost snow-free winter. Do you remember? And Mr. W 's family has a cabin in Virginia but there's never anything like this blizzard moving through. I love snow. I'm sure it's only because I don't know any better ;;) |
Scarlett & Budman = funny!!!
Buffalo is expected to receive 1" (you heard me - one inch) of snow tomorrow, while many of you will get 1 - 2 feet of it!!! How strange is that? Mother nature is definitey on a roll these days. I take snow for granted, but I now understand how scary it can be for those of you who aren't used to it! Please keep in mind that snow melts. Running to the store for bread and milk is the least of your problems. Make sure your elderly neighbors are taken care of and don't drive in it if you don't know what you're doing! If you own a shovel, use it on your neighbor's sidewalk as well as you own! And if you have a freeze after a rainfall, ABSOLUTELY ASSUME there's black ice. Be safe everyone! |
TG I guess I've been lucky. I've lived all my life in the Midwest specifically Indiana for 40 years, Illinois for 3.
Even during the blizzards of '78 & '79 we never lost power for more than a few hours. Like Scarlett we're much more likely to lose power in the spring or summer with thunder storms. Then it's hot & sticky and you do what you can. Drink the beer before it gets warm comes to mind. :-) |
Buffalo girl, I remember the first time I heard the term Black Ice.
When we were skidding down the hill to a favorite restaurant in Nyack NY one January :O We were taking friends and promised that they would be better off in our car LOL |
Ok,here in the lower Sacramento Valley we have been complaining because we have not seen blue sky (or any sky) and sunshine for over ten days. Just fog, fog and more fog. Dreary and cold weather.
So now I don't know if we are the lucky ones or if all of you that are buying fantastic food items and wines etc and sheltering into place during your storms are the lucky ones. You sure make the snow storms sound more romantic and fun! Nothing fun about fog! ((*)) |
BufaloGirl please remember a snow shovel is a one-way ticket to a heart attack! If you're young enough, help those neighbors. If not spring isn't that far away. Buffalo is only to get 1 inch? Geez, good clean living up there? :-) |
Indy: I hear ya!
