jetset1- yeah, Spokane has REALLY grown. But Danvenport Hotel is amazing, and the liberty fountain (rfp) is neat.

And Walla Walla ain't so affordable anymore:) And now there have been sightings of strange creatures known as "tourists" and "yuppies". Oh, dear...

August 22 is my birthday. The older I get, the less I'm looking forward to publicly admitting my age.

If this is only the immediate family, I love to spend the day out - like in a zoo, a theme park, in the mountains.

Our older son's birthday is only 2 weeks away, September 5. Yes, one of those Labor Days I was in labor, literally.

He loves restaurants. So this year we'll heard our guests into the rotating restaurant celebrating both b-days together.

I try to do something different each year.

Whitman's a great school- to some of the locals, though- "it's too d*** liberal"

My sister-in-law is August 22nd, the oldest of seven(60).. my husband thought his birthday was a day later until we got married and I saw his birth certificate.. his brother is 8/8, dad 8/13, dh 8/20, sil 8/22.
I figure November must have been a friendly month back then,lol.:S-

Oh, and where in Alaska, Jetset1? Thinking about teaching up there somewhere when I graduate. Secondary ed, History, baby!

Kenai Peninsula, 2.5 hours from Anchorage(traffic adds or subtracts about 30 minutes)..
Your chances of employment are good up here, though starting in bush communities(i.e. villages) is better.
We lived in the Aleutians for many years and I was a substitute K-8 and the turnover is always high, maybe 2 years due to isolation..
The spring job fair in Anchorage has the community school reps from all over. Good luck.

jetset, I think Scarlett's birthday is March 23rd - she posted twice and the first time she said March 23. I think the second time was a typo.

I've known quite a few people over the years who share my birthday. There must be statistics that show the distribution of birthdays. Perhaps I will do some research.

Hey- thanks. I know there's a better chance of employment in the "bush"....but what I'm afraid of is how "rustic" some places are. I can survive w/o starbucks, etc, but indoor plumbing is a must:)

Hi Jetset---I was born in May, which makes me a very proud and stubborn Taurus.

My favorite place to celebrate birthdays is in the mountains. My last "big OH" birthday was spent mountain biking the Tenth Mountain trail in Colorado with my son. Currently planning the next celebration (2007), a hiking trip in Switzerland with as many family members as can take the time off work.

Well, even our small town had espresso, so there is a bit more now than there used to be,lol. Cable tv, satellite dishes.. the only thing missing is cell service in some outlying communities.
The hardest part was available and affordable rentals. It is subsidized or provided in some cases. Our village had terribly high rent and not much available, hence, the high turnover.
Bigger communities are your best bet. Southeast Alaska is also scenic and on the ferry and plane routes. What I miss most is the fresh seafood right off the boat.

Juneau is nice, but like living on an island. 22 miles of paved roads. In and out via boat/ferry/plane. But, job market used to be pretty good. Don't know about now.

rentals in small towns are tough anywhere (well, barring destinations/college towns), so no surprise there. Glad to hear the "espresso bit"- some of the people I've talked to make it sound like Siberia, or a third world country- but then again I think they're the same sort of people who think Colfax, WA is the end-of-the-world-oh-my-deity. <sigh>

Anyway- definitely was looking at SE- looks like a great place to live and maybe not as bad winter (as say, Fairbanks)

moosely---"bad" winters in Alaska are very subjective. I lived in Fairbanks for nine years, and I'd take the cold, dry, sunny days there over a rainy winter in SE any time.

(the ellis island thing is neat, but unfortunately I can't do it, even though at least one ancestor did enter that way- he was German, couldn't speak good english- so the current family name is some mangled version of "what is your name" in German:) )

I dated someone who moved to Juneau for a while. It was warmer in Juneau that winter than it was in Dallas or Atlanta. SE Alaska is amazingly temperate.

My birthday is January 30th and I like to be out of town on my birthday... this year I"m planning to be in Chicago! :)
