Anyone else find America boring?

Boring boring boring. I mean, what's the big deal with tourism in the US? I went to New York, but after a while, you've seen one very tall building, you've seen them all. Some of the art-lovers might disagree with me but all those museums full of old stuff, pretty boring. And the museums with the new stuff, I just don't get it, who likes that stuff?

All those white buildings in Washington -- don't they have another color? And they could stand a few of those tall buildings from New York!

Chicago has those tall buildings, but that lake is just an ocean-wannabe. And thick pizza? Heck, I can just stack a bunch of frozen pizzas together and get the same thing, I don't have to travel to get it.

The Grand Canyon? A "Big Dig" that's been there for a few centuries I guess, and they still haven't figured out a way to build a decent resort down by the river. I mean, get a clue if you want tourist dollars!

San Francisco's not bad if you like to skateboard downhill a lot, but don't those people know there's going to be an earthquake? You won't get me there again until they're done with the earthquake.

Anyone else have the same experiences or is it just me? ;-)

seetheworld Jan 21st, 2005 01:51 PM

Yea, I can't believe they haven't fixed that crack in the Liberty Bell - what's up with that?!?

lincasanova Jan 21st, 2005 01:52 PM

what a sense of humor!

GoTravel Jan 21st, 2005 01:54 PM

Chicago has loud mouthed residents who are really just Dallas wannabes.

Don't even get me started on those trashy beaches in Atlanta.

What's the big deal about that big hole out west? You'd think it was something impressive.

Dan Jan 21st, 2005 02:15 PM

I love this thread.

New Orleans would be nice if they bulldozed that old nasty French Quarter and put in a large manicured state park, some mountains, and new concrete buildings instead.

kureiff Jan 21st, 2005 02:18 PM

I would definately visit New Orleans if that happened.

I live in Montana and sure wish there were better roads with fewer mountain passes. It would certainly make travelling easier if the mountains weren't always in the way!

FainaAgain Jan 21st, 2005 02:18 PM

And what with all those old redwood trees in California, why people go out of their way just to see them? There is no fruit!!! Give me an apple or a cherry orchard instead!

Ozarksbill Jan 21st, 2005 02:19 PM

Are you just pulling our collective leg, soccr, or are you really so sour?
I can't believe you find Chicago, NYC, Washington as being boring...and that based on tall buildings. Over the years I've enjoyed many a museum exhibit, restaurant, historic site, and more in these and other US cities. Methinks you waste our time.
Ozarks Bill

jetset1 Jan 21st, 2005 02:29 PM

yeah, I hear you sccr.. why do people gripe about the cold winter weather and driving conditions still have a burning desire to come to Alaska every year? I mean, between the eagle sized mosquitos with saddles, the man eating bears and the necessity of actually breathing clean unspoiled air, sheesh. You'd think people were tired of seafood already!
Seattle- tired of seeing ugly feet in Birkenstocks.
California-_does anyone look their real age,or has Michael Jackson influenced that many people?
Fast food, fat guts, strip malls, celebrity worship, naughty athletes.. I guess those Europeans and others get tired of their architectural wonderlands and historical pasts and have to see our stuff to appreciate some of what they have. Is it wine o'clock yet? cheers, J.

FainaAgain Jan 21st, 2005 02:35 PM

I find Ozark's post the funniest so far.

kureiff Jan 21st, 2005 02:36 PM

I agree with Faina, regarding both the Ozark post and the redwoods. Why can't you get apples when you're visiting the redwoods???

snowrooster Jan 21st, 2005 02:47 PM

What drives me crazy are da darn rivers all over the place. I mean, why not just fill em' up w/dirt? It would certainly save a lot of tax dollars being spent maintaining all dem silly bridges. What da we need all that dagone water fer anyhow? Raftin'? Kayakin'? Canoein'? Just plain ol' nice scenery? P'shaw! Fill it 'em up w/waste and call it a landfill - kills two birds w/one stone.

And hey, what's up w/all those Bushes in America? Yuck!

indytravel Jan 21st, 2005 03:01 PM

What is up with the race thing?

Every year people only visit me 3 times in Indianapolis. Once for the Indy 500, once for the Formula 1 and once for Nascar.

Jeez they all just go in circles...though leave it to Europe and the F1 to do it backwards.

Now they're looking at adding a motorcycle race and a pickup truck race.

Great! More circles!

cfc Jan 21st, 2005 03:17 PM

What about those boring people in Boston, who don't seem to think any other city has sports teams -- Red Sox, Bruins, Pats (bubbye), Celts -- yeah yeah yeah yeah.

Philly's almost as bad, though.

But just try to surf in either city -- it's hopeless, just hopeless.

sunbabe Jan 21st, 2005 03:20 PM

"O beautiful for spacious skies".....what the hell was Katherine Bates thinking!

gc Jan 21st, 2005 03:24 PM

I think they should knock down the old buildings in Boston and make it more like Houston...

cigalechanta Jan 21st, 2005 03:25 PM

seetheworld...rofl! and the golden gate bridge is not gold!

FainaAgain Jan 21st, 2005 03:28 PM

At least while at the Golden Gate bridge you can see orange! ;)

dovima Jan 21st, 2005 03:28 PM

Isn't there some kind of machine they can bring in from L.A. to blow the fog out of San Fran?

shaz60 Jan 21st, 2005 03:36 PM

The worst thing about America is the people. Their childish optimism, naive belief in equality, dangerous kindness to strangers, silly disregard for the class system, and most of all their warped sense of humor.

cigalechanta Jan 21st, 2005 03:47 PM

shaz, how sad to think the way you do, optimism is never childish, kindness to strangers eliminates predudices, as the quote is from religeous doctrine, be kind to strangers, you nevr know when you may be entertaining angels unaware(not the direct, quote)disregard for the class system? I don't know what you mean but sure there are warped sense of humor. We do believe in equality. That's why some of our most famous people are from other countries.

shaz60 Jan 21st, 2005 03:52 PM

Sorry cigalechanta. I was employing that warped sense of humor but apparently not as effectively as I hoped.

indytravel Jan 21st, 2005 03:54 PM

It's Ok shaz. I like that you noticed the warped sense of humor. :-)

bennie Jan 21st, 2005 04:04 PM

shaz60 - You had me laughing!

cigalechanta Jan 21st, 2005 04:09 PM

WAAAAaaaa, I thought he was serious!

cigalechanta Jan 21st, 2005 04:10 PM

Tis a troll of another matter.

seetheworld Jan 21st, 2005 04:10 PM

:D

hugglynn Jan 21st, 2005 04:17 PM

dovima--
conversely, maybe they can bring down a machine from San Fran to blow the smog out of LA ;)
soccr, I suppose the US is quite boring, with nothing like tsunamis to keep the tourists pouring in......and the other problem with the US is the doggone media, for if there were a tsunami coming here, the stupid bastards here would have tried to see who could be the first to tell us....

JimF Jan 21st, 2005 06:39 PM

Can no one appreciate the unique beauty of our interstate highways, with ribbons of monotonous white concrete broken only by occasional strips of asphalt? And as if this is not enough, the artistic creations are embellished by colorful billboards, proclaiming the superiority of products, blotting out the plight of the downtrodden who reside beneath.

Boring? My goodness, hardly. We are just missing the point. This must be cutting edge tourism. Why else would an intelligent society allow such creativity? It's obvious, we have to learn to appreciate it....

Scarlett Jan 21st, 2005 06:47 PM

Yeah! What about Florida??
All those dopey palm trees! Try climbing one of those! ouch! and no apples in them!
Who said all the houses have to be Pink???
And all that water! Lakes, rivers, waterways, ponds, streams and for goodness sake , even an ocean AND a Gulf! Who needs that much water???
boring boring boring.

Tandoori_Girl Jan 21st, 2005 06:50 PM

=D>

indytravel Jan 21st, 2005 07:00 PM

JimF bring back Ladybird; bring down the billboards!

We need to see the blight!

:-D

girlonthego Jan 21st, 2005 07:24 PM

Love this country, hate the billboards and driving I95 ugggh.

jor Jan 21st, 2005 07:43 PM

soccr, you might as well just kill yourself and get it over with, you poor SOB!

gyppielou Jan 21st, 2005 07:53 PM

New Zealand would never have the imagination to pave paridise to put up a parking lot.

lcuy Jan 21st, 2005 08:28 PM

and what about Alaska and hawaii? Cold state/ hot state, who cares??? They aren't even attached, so why bother

ElendilPickle Jan 21st, 2005 10:54 PM

I never was a fan, and "Horse With No Name" has to be one of the worst songs of all time.

Also with Florida are those crazy Keys - h**l we all have keys at home, in our pockets, in the car - what's the draw about warm weather, trade winds and sunsets? Like the sun doesn't go down every day.......

soccr Jan 22nd, 2005 05:23 AM

And another thing. The weather. I mean!

I think Chicago and Detroit got started because a bunch of people in New York said, 'Gee, I'm enjoying the crime and the poverty, but it just isn't cold enough and I want more snow. Let's go west.'"

jor -- killing myself would be redundant, since I've lived in Philadelphia.

soccr Jan 22nd, 2005 05:24 AM
