Amazing Race Starts Tonight

Hi all...since the Amazing Race starts tonight in Brooklyn are we going to follow this on the US Board? Or, the Europe Board or Other Topics? "It don't matter to me". Let's just do it.

And which team are you rooting for from the beginning? I'm gonna pull for the family from Ormand Beach, FL.

OneWanderingJew Sep 27th, 2005 04:04 PM

Omigosh, Icee! I almost forgot! I've been waiting and waiting and forgot today was the 27th. That's what I get for being off for 2 days.

I don't care what board we discuss it on but I never remember to check the Other Topics one...

beachgirl86 Sep 27th, 2005 05:28 PM

Yay! I love this show! I wasn't sure if I would like the teams of 4, but it's pretty good so far!

Fodorite018 Sep 27th, 2005 05:48 PM

Last Tuesday I was all excited to watch this. Then I realized I had to wait another week:(

My DD told me that a family from our town tried out for it. They did not make the cut though because the kids were bickering too much, lol!

Mary2Go Sep 27th, 2005 05:51 PM

Thanks for the reminder! Love this show and I have been cracking up at the commercial where the little girl just keels over fast asleep. I can not imagine doing this with my family and I can't wait to see the complications of four people trying to be team players!

LoveItaly Sep 27th, 2005 06:16 PM

Another thanks for the reminder iceeu2.
I have said so many times, whether it is a news bulletin or a TV show there is not better "town crier" than Fodor's. Enjoy!

crefloors Sep 27th, 2005 10:12 PM

I think the right team got eliminated tonight, bless their little hearts. Really nice family but the didn't have the "fire in the belly".

Keith Sep 28th, 2005 04:28 AM

I liked the Blacks, but don't believe they could ever compete. If they hadn't lost this week, it would have been one of the next two.

The editors are being careful not to make the teams seem as annoying as last season.

With the exception of the Paolos. Ugh! They are kind of funny to watch, but not people I would ever want to be around.

No roadblocks last night. Wonder if they were edited out, or eliminated?

Keith

Jocelyn_P Sep 28th, 2005 04:37 AM

What a class act the Blacks were.

Will they be staying in the US for the whole series? A coast-to-coast driving race would be pretty cool.

dan_woodlief Sep 28th, 2005 04:44 AM

Very entertaining. And for someone who loves history, loves New York City, and hates the New York Yankees (the Boston family saying "Yankees suck, Yankees suck" as they passed Yankee Stadium), it was extremely entertaining. Next week's show looks great too, since I am into Civil War history. My 6-year old, who loves to travel, became a real fan too (of course, she must watch the rest of the show on tape tonight since it lasted until 11). She and I were joking about trying out for the show last night.

Wednesday Sep 28th, 2005 05:08 AM

..I realy enjoyed the family version, more than I thought I would..seeing the dynamics and each person's contributions is interesting...I felt for the nice family that got eliminated but they seemed to do everything with no sense of focus or urgency. I like the Weavers from FL I think the best, and I actually am interested how the Gaghan ? family does..with the 2 youngest kids that all run...I am looking forward to an entertaining season !

suzanne Sep 28th, 2005 06:08 AM

My BF and I were tickled to see that it started in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the SUVs were parked RIGHT OUTSIDE our building...you could even see right into our bedroom window! Holy crap!

As much as I loved past Amazing Races, though, I think this one is going to be somewhat annoying (loud, fighting families). One of the most annoying - the Paolos - are from my hometown {cringe}. And jeez, I hope they're heading off in a plane around the world soon...I watch this show because they go to EXOTIC places. Hope this time it's not just some road trip round the country.

JJ5 Sep 28th, 2005 06:24 AM

I missed the first 1/2 hour, but saw most of it while unpacking groceries.

That buggy pull runaway looked dangerous with the hill, and it was lucky the mom didn't get hurt when the thing overran her. It seems that they switched tasks. Doesn't seem like they were penalized for it.

It's lovely seeing the country, but I have a feeling that this one is going to be chock filled with squealing girls noise. I actually turned down the volume. Glad I had majority boys when I hear this noise.

Doesn't it seem "funny" that when groups this size get their next directions, they all seem to act frenetic and shout directions/instructions at each other that are meaningless for a few moments, then get into the cars and minutes later seem drained and oftentimes lost for leadership. It seems to me that those first few moments in the car are when the biggest mistakes are made in a rush (wrong exit just trying to get out). One of the most productive things that most could do to improve their times is to jot down the route "in" or landmark site (track/mentally with landmark) directions for going out when coming in. At least they would have access to the former route, if necessary and one proven "out" track. And make one person who is not the driver responsible for this. Designate map person, mile post/route person etc. It's easily done with 4 people and 8 eyes. One person should just be reading signs aloud while others do the landmark search etc.

The Detours are going to be rather strange, I think. Physical feats that could be done by 50 pounders or 250 pounders??? They will all probably include one feature that is not primarily physical strength.

Right away I can see big differences between this and the duo's. The duo's could mesh their strengths/weaknesses to each other more easily. This one it seems like there is always going to be some weakest link that will feel the brunt one way or another. But also the blame is more dispersed. Some of the people younger than I, but middle-aged, sure don't look they did a speck of physical work in their lives.

I wonder if this race will be primarily by auto. Seems like it will be hard to manage plane tickets for four, in the ways that the duos could. Or train tickets either.

There are 3 or 4 groups that are going to be MUCH slower than the others this time. In the first month, I bet the last two groups are hours and hours after the others in the top 5. They don't seem to have a driving leader and too much is committee decisions.

I really like the 4 women together- they seemed to have bonded before this show. And the widow who is constantly invoking Jesus is annoying but she's going to get her group moving all as one with little input- it could be a big advantage or could also go quite astray if she, the boss, makes a wrong choice.

I don't have a favorite couple of groups quite yet. I do like the three son-in-laws with their FIL- but I don't think he has enough pep to be a light under their fire. And I like the family with the two small kids too, but I doubt that the kids will always be advantageous. Overall, I think 2 to a team was better.

Barbara Sep 28th, 2005 07:11 AM

This was weird and I hope the real Amazing Race comes back soon.

Agree with everyone who thinks it's awfully loud. I'd like the four sisters a lot more if they dialed the shrieking down a lot. Phil's going to have to remember ear plugs in future!

Initial impressions, which may change(!):

Don't care for the Schroeders after the dad's remark about handicapped children.

Do like the Linz siblings, although I was disappointed at how poorly they did.

Like the Aiello's..the dad with his sons-in-law.

I also like the father with his three daughters but I can't rememer their name.

Don't care much for the Weavers and I'm amazed that they did so well when apparently their mom doesn't know that Pennsylvania is a State.

Hopefully, the Paolo's will leave soon.

Did anyone notice that the guys with the franks were Kevin and Drew who came in fourth in Season 1? Disappointing that only one racer recognised them, one of the Paolo boys.It will be fun if previous racers appear in each leg.

JJ5 Sep 28th, 2005 07:23 AM

I've only watched one prior race, so I didn't notice that, Barbara.

Somehow I don't think this one is going to have a very large following. There just isn't as much serendipity when you have 4 people. I'd wager a team or two drops out of this one just because of some medical problem.

massagediva Sep 28th, 2005 07:27 AM

I'm yearning for exotic locales!I'm sick,I know, but I screamed with laughter when the buggy ran out of control and ran over the Mom.Sorry,I know I need therapy.

Fodorite018 Sep 28th, 2005 07:39 AM

I enjoyed the show last night. A good chance of pace. I relly liked the Black family ,but agree that they did not seem to have that winning drive. The Paolo family got on my nerves more than once, especially the mother. Thankfully, I missed the handicapped children comment. I noticed the men at the frank stand and thought they looked familiar, but couldn't figure out from which race. I wonder if there will be other past participants that show up in the new episodes?

Keith Sep 28th, 2005 07:40 AM

JJ5,

Changing between the two tasks at a detour is fine. We have even had a team in the past doing one task, when they stumbled across the goal of the other one.

They wouldn't have to find tickets for just 4 people, but tickets for 6 (sound and camera crew).

Keith

Barbara Sep 28th, 2005 07:43 AM

JJ5, I have to admit, I watched season 1 for the first time this summer on GSN. Kevin and Drew, who were/are known as the Frats because they're fraternity brothers, didn't appeal at first, but ended up being one of my all-time favorite teams.

Another thing this season, they changed the colors of the flags.

JJ5 Sep 28th, 2005 07:54 AM

Yipes, even getting a bit to eat is going to be more problematic for that number. And bathroom visits?? All those young women and kids!!!

Definitely the men and all male teams are going to have an advantage on that one.

And I bet we are going to see kids get "pushed" before its over- a la little league parent syndrome. It would be hard for this NOT to happen as in the heat of competition- age can be momentarily forgotten.

The Paolo mom- I have an aunt that could be her twin. She's 91 now and her scowl could stop a horse in its tracks. I TRAVELED to Germany with her once. And actually got lost in East Germany and Berlin just trying to get away from her. LOL!

rb_travelerxATyahoo Sep 28th, 2005 07:56 AM

O.P. asks "are we going to follow this on the US Board? Or, the Europe Board or Other Topics?" and since the Race takes place world-wide, "Other" or maybe "Travelers Lounge" seems most appropriate.

Skipped it last night to watch PBS Bob Dylan special.

Shane Sep 28th, 2005 08:04 AM

The Blacks really had little chance. Their kids are too young to help in a game like Amazing Race. Furthermore, they seemed a little out of their element in the outdoors. The Paolos should be slated to go rather soon. Mrs. Paolo seems to be dead weight. Any of the other teams seem as good a bet as any other team to win.

chepar Sep 28th, 2005 09:13 AM

I also had to turn down the volume - the shrieking of the sisters and the widow and her kids - my ears were ringing.

I also have 3 sisters - way back when they were taking applications for TAR8 (this is the 8th season, right?) we were joking around that we should apply - our gimmick would be "instant drama".

A couple of reasons we could have never done the show - once we all hit the mat at the pit stop, instead of jumping around and shrieking for joy, we probably would have all glared at each other and traded a few well placed digs - and by the time we were sent home (I have no illusions that we could have won) one sister would have been left by the roadside. :D

islandbeachangel Sep 28th, 2005 09:16 AM

The fact that the Weaver Mom actually had to ask if Pennsylvania was a state made my jaw drop!!!! I'm pretty sure she's the one that actually asked someone for directions to "a town called Soho". I howled!!! Maybe because I work in Soho that I was amazed at that. She's going to give us blondes a bad rep. :)

Also the fact that a bunch of teams didn't know what the George Washington Bride was (Washington Bridge) surprised me. Do the teams know where they are starting from before the race? I would read up a bit on general facts of the city I'd be starting from.

I so enjoyed watching last night's episode. I live in North Jersey and had fun watching the teams lost in Fort Lee -- I kept yelling directions at the TV!!!

lolfn Sep 28th, 2005 09:24 AM

the pink ladies have to go! they act like idiots, shrieking, laughing, hanging out of the car windows yelling stupid things at people. ugh! they are like a pack of 12 yr olds.

i was pulling for the black family. sad to see them get eliminated so soon, especially since they have never left the east coast before! i thought for sure (and was so hoping) the paolos were going to lose.

don't worry, they'll be jetting around the world soon enough.

jorr Sep 28th, 2005 10:22 AM

I was hoping the pink ladies would loose. They were obnoxious.

suzanne, I was under the impression that the race was taped in June. When did you see this outside your window?

islandbeachangel, You can't really blame someone for not knowing Soho and the Washington Bridge if they are from another state. Is Brooklyn Park an area of Minneapolis, a park, or a suburb? Also, there are thousands of famous bridges in the US which I am sure you do not know.

I got a charge out of the poor guy who was in the race with his three sons-in-law. Could be very interesting.

I wanted to slap those Paolo kids. Total disrespect for their mother.

lvk Sep 28th, 2005 10:44 AM

Is it just me, or has this AR season started out on a very "coarse" note. I mean, did we really have to know that the brother passed gas? Did we really have to watch him vomit? I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan too, but did we really need to hear the "Yankees suck" chant? Four people constantly shouting over each other in a closed-in car does not make for very good T.V., IMO.

The pink ladies are beyond annoying. The Paolos are obnoxiously disrespectful.
I'm glad the Florida team won some money, so they can buy some shorts that fit. (oh, and the praying for directions got old, also)

I hope future shows are more entertaining and less like nails on a chalkboard.

jorr Sep 28th, 2005 11:07 AM

lvk, I thought the farting thing was hallarious! The way his sister had to just sit there and put up with it. If they edited out all the farting, fighting, arguing, cat fights, and stumbles it would just be a boring race...which I would not watch.

crefloors Sep 28th, 2005 11:15 AM

I thought the farting thing was funny also. I figured out what he'd done before she said anything..too funny. I guess I just wasn't raised well. :D

CheBird Sep 28th, 2005 12:14 PM

Rumor has it they don't leave the U.S. this season due to overseas travel issues with the little kids. The language barriers and jockeying for seats on the international flights has always been a huge part of why I like the show so much. If they stick to road tripping throughout the U.S., it'll lose a lot of its edge. Watching someone try to find a farm in PA just isn't very exciting.

cameorl Sep 28th, 2005 12:30 PM

why weren't the paolo team penalized for not having their clue?

LoveItaly Sep 28th, 2005 12:32 PM

I turned it off, LOL. Couldn't stand the noise etc. Guess that makes me a bore but I honestly was so bored with this show.

iceeu2 Sep 28th, 2005 01:03 PM

You know what LoveItaly? I was so excited that I fell asleep! So, I guess I turned it off too!

LoveItaly Sep 28th, 2005 01:27 PM

LOL iceeu2! Thank you, that makes me feel better, honest. I went back to my computer and tried to catch up on my emails. Take good care!

antlori Sep 28th, 2005 01:34 PM

The paolo team wasn't penalized because they went back for their clue. So I guess the extra time it took to go back was really their penalty.

MikePinTucson Sep 28th, 2005 01:43 PM

I don't think the Paolo family did go back for their clue. They don't need to have the clue with them, as long as they go where it told them to go. As long as they remembered, they were OK. It is just not OK to skip something you were supposed to do or to go someplace you were supposed to go.

My thoughts are similar to others voiced here -- I liked it more than I thought I would, I wish those women would stop their screaming, I liked the Blacks, but they really didn't look like they would be competitive, and the Paolo family was pretty obnoxious.

I also thought the "franks" guys looked familiar but couldn't place them.

I do hope they will do something other than drive around the U.S.

Mary2Go Sep 28th, 2005 02:24 PM

Does the "background" music bug anyone else? Between the shreiking sisters and the music I couldn't stand it!

MichelleY Sep 28th, 2005 02:28 PM

I hope the Paolo family goes soon. The sons are so disrespectful to their mother that it is painful to watch. Their dad just sits their and lets them bad mouth their mother. They need their mouths washed out with soap!!!

I really liked the Blacks, but I think they were TOO nice and not agressive enough.

Stay tuned,

MY

Catbert Sep 28th, 2005 02:32 PM

I wanted to slap those Paolo boys silly! I hope they go next week.

vegasnative Sep 28th, 2005 02:45 PM

The part I found most humorous was in the buggy pull when the kids were inside and mom and dad pushing/pulling and the boy starts singing "she'll be coming around the mountain" and they pass the other team (I think the siblings...look more physically fit) that was too much!! Also, i could not believe that only 1 person recognized the "frank" guys, they were terrific with their "hey, fat a**" remarks to each other. The Blacks didn't have enough drive for this race, for heavens sake man...row that boat! I have to say that when the Weaver mom was run over I was terrified for those kids since their dad was run over and killed last year, I can't imagine what those few mintues were like. I also asked the DH is they are going to stay in the US or what, I mean they did get tents, seems like they might be about to get good use out of those tents. I'd like to see the dad + 3 daughters do well, dad with his 3 sons-in-law and the team with the kids.
So far so good.
