CDC says fully vaccinated people may travel

Good news for grandparents and others. The CDC now says people who are fully vaccinated may travel. Of course, they still recommend wearing mass on public transportation.

LucieV Apr 2nd, 2021 10:06 AM

...sorry, stupid question, I just googled the CDC article.

We will definitely be traveling this summer. Currently researching beach trips for July/August. I consider it essential travel as it is essential that I get the hell out of town for a week. And it is essential that I use up 4 weeks of vacation time by the end of December or else I will lose days.

Same! Well, I won't lose vacation days if I don't use them, but I am maxed out, which means I can't accrue any more, which is essentially the same thing, so I need to use some.

gruezi Apr 2nd, 2021 10:29 AM

I’m still thinking Iceland in August.

I think my husband needs to get rid of me because he immediately texted me the news that I’d be welcome there.

I definitely need some time off (cranky and irritable) and I think the only way to really get it is to be out of the country.

I tried to take this holiday weekend off and stuff came up I have to do. Sigh.

barbrn Apr 2nd, 2021 10:30 AM

I was doing it anyway but it is nice the CDC has given their blessing.

I shall see my grandkids in June. Flying from Chicago to Seattle. Airbnb with an ocean view is rented and thankfully already paid for. I will be there for 6 weeks. Plane tickets are bought although it was a strange and scary feeling to press the buy button.

gruezi Apr 2nd, 2021 10:31 AM

Barb - your post makes me so happy. I’m so glad. I love that you’re making it a vacation as well as a much overdue visit.

marvelousmouse Apr 2nd, 2021 10:35 AM

Yes, but are we welcome anywhere? 😅

I heard this morning and would love to get abroad if any countries are letting U.S. travelers in. I'll have my second vaccine in a momth. They were talking about a "vaccine passport" here in Maryland, showing that you've had your full series. Otoh, the vaccine is only good forc6 months.

As for beach, now that my go-to inn has closed, not sure where and what minth I would go.

kureiff Apr 2nd, 2021 10:59 AM

Yay, barb!

We have tickets to Hawaii in mid-May. I am hoping that with this news, Hawaii will remove the 72 hour negative test requirement for those who have been fully vaccinated. There are only two Hawaii trusted providers in MT, and they don't do rapid tests, so I'm worried about getting a test result in time. Fingers crossed we won't have to mess with that as we'll be fully-vaccinated.

I do not believe that is accurate. Maybe one of the health folks in here could step in but my understanding is that the vaccine is good for at least 6 months. That is based on the current data. As they get additional data, they will be able to make more definitive statements about how long it is effective for. IOW, right now the medical community does not know the duration of the vaccine's effectiveness beyond six months but they are not saying it is only good for 6 months.

Are you going back to Maui? Soooooo jealous.

Big Island. We love it! And, you know, like our last trip, we intend to be travelers and not merely tourists. ;)

I wouldn't expect anything less from you. We've never been to the Big Island - only Maui and Oahu. Maybe next time we go we will try it out.

wtm003 Apr 2nd, 2021 11:08 AM

I have 5 trips booked between April and June. I need to plant my flowers sometime between trips. I flew a couple of weeks ago and except for some crowding at the departure gate, I didn't feel uncomfortable. In fact, it was rather uplifting that I was doing something normal. Funny, my brother just mentioned Iceland. I think it's going to be very popular so book soon.

Already looking forward to beers on the beach.

Yes, me too! I check the news everyday. We have a nearby approved urgent care that does the rapid test, but I'd rather spend the $400 in Hawaii rather than covid testing.

kareyon Apr 2nd, 2021 12:02 PM

I'm at home this week using the vacation time I would otherwise lose (we stop accruing at the cap). First shot Monday.

My folks have a beach condo for late June with an April 15 no-refunds date-- they will be so happy to hear this! I'd better start shopping for a swimsuit coverup.

ninadsream, nobody know how long the vaxine is good for. It’s at least 6 months.

So far, the recommendations have been changed for domestic travel only. From NPR:

The CDC updated its website on Friday to reflect the latest scientific evidence, writing that "people who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine can travel safely within the United States.”

Travel within USA without tests or quarantine! Wonderful! My kids in Buffalo NY got their first Fauci Ouchies. I think these are great news.

Egypt is fabulous! I've been there twice and would gladly go back. The temples, tombs and artifacts are wonderful. I've never been to Wales but I don't know how it could compete with Egypt.

mokka4 Apr 2nd, 2021 04:11 PM

Yes, the CDC's blessing was for DOMESTIC travel at this time.

For those considering Iceland, have you seen the live stream of the Fagradalsfjall volcano? Scroll down a bit for the live stream. Pretty cool.

I’ve got tickets to Switzerland the end of October... fingers still crossed they will welcome us by that time.

gruezi Apr 2nd, 2021 09:23 PM

Like a lot of Europe, Switzerland is a bit behind on vaccinations. But, I hope you get to go. Late September/early October is my favorite time of year to visit.

zebec Apr 2nd, 2021 10:24 PM

How are Insurance companies responding to this latest travel news, are they still offering policies that include covid coverage?
I am done. the question.

Vicky Apr 3rd, 2021 03:05 AM

I am desperate to get out of dodge but am anxious about booking the dance convention in July- not really cause Of covid but cost. They require a. negative test or vaccination which I have. Convention is $299. Hotel is $239 a night for four nights. Air to Tampa is $369 to get there when I want (not early but in time for conference check in around 7. )It’s the Don Cesar on St Pete beach. The other ladies have roommates cutting the cost.

The thing is, I can afford it and I’ll dance with Louis Can Amstel from DWTS and I know it will be joyful but the cost is a trip to Europe- which of course I can’t take.

schmerl Apr 3rd, 2021 05:19 AM

Go for it Vicky. Dancing means so much to you and you get to dance with Louis!

We're driving to Michigan to see GS and meet new baby GD in a few weeks. I'm trying to convince DH that this news from the CDC means I can use the bathroom at a rest stop, rather than peeing in my travel potty in a cornfield, like we did last October :) I'll do anything to go see them, but getting slightly dehydrated and peeing in cornfields is something I'd like to put behind me.

Hoping to go to Portland to see pregnant DD and SIL in May, it's been so long since we've seen them in person. It will feel so odd to get on a plane.

Dukey1 Apr 3rd, 2021 09:38 AM

Not using the bathroom at a rest stop???? Please, this is ridiculous.

I don't think it's necessarily their blessing. They were admitting that travel poses little risk to the fully vaccinated.

Because they encourage you NOT to do nonessential travel, because cases are going up in some states and you have the chance of being exposed to variants.

For international travel, you still need a negative test before boarding a flight back to the US. The only new thing is that you don't have to self-quarantine when you get back. I doubt many people were self-quarantining.

I think I have a credit with a hotel there so yeah I'd like to go but I want to at least start getting vaccinated before I book anything, even if non-refundable.

Some American expats or "digital nomads" are rushing back to the US to get vaccinated earlier than they're likely to be vaccinated in Europe.

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/u...cinations-cmd/

Eric Barry has been riding a seemingly never-ending wave of uncertainty in his life over the past year.

The 35-year-old writer and podcast host, who is originally from California's Bay Area, was researching a novel in Ecuador when the global pandemic erupted in March 2020.

Over the next 12 months, as Barry tried to establish his new home base in Berlin, where he's studying for a master's degree, he faced challenge after challenge: an apartment that fell through in Berlin's notoriously difficult rental market; trying to track down a German residence permit likely mailed to his former address; and navigating an unfamiliar healthcare system in which he has no idea when he'll be vaccinated.

Now, Barry is headed back to the United States for something he does have control over: getting his Covid-19 shot in the near future. Hearing a fellow expat's plans a few weeks ago to travel to the US for her own vaccination "planted a seed," he says.

"And then on a Facebook group I started seeing wave after wave of Americans that were all traveling back, and I thought, maybe this is something I want to do," Barry says while waiting in a Starbucks before the first of a three-flight, 30-plus-hour journey to California, where he plans to stay with his already-vaccinated mom.
"I never thought that, as I was leaving the United States for Germany, with this promise of a life with a better healthcare system, less than a year later I'd be traveling back to the US for healthcare."
Well at least these are younger people opting to try to get vaccinated ASAP. There was a fear that the younger groups would decline to be vaccinated, figuring risk to their own health was relatively small from covid.

** I'm trying to convince DH that this news from the CDC means I can use the bathroom at a rest stop, rather than peeing in my travel potty in a cornfield,**

I find rest stops on the interstates to be somewhat outdoorsy, but huge and well ventilated. Too much open air really - cold in winter and hot in summer. I had to travel I-95 from Orlando to Jacksonville in mid April and was concerned about the same thing. I found the rest stops had a big thing of hand sanitizer on a stand outside and there were very few travelers. Even back in April, in Florida (DeathSantis was already declaring wrestling a necessary business), most people put on masks to go in.

wtm003 Apr 3rd, 2021 12:21 PM

Vicky, since you can afford it, GO and have fun.

I drove across the mid-west last summer and used gas station/convenience store restrooms which were nice, very clean and located in the store - not those ones from the past located at the back of the store where you needed a key. Hand sanitizer was located at all the entrances and everyone was masked.

I just need to point out that if you are an international traveler returning to or visiting NYS, you are required to quarantine for 7 days if you test between days 3-5 upon your return. If you decline to test, you are required to quarantine for 10 days. A negative test does not exempt you from completing quarantine. Another thing to point out is that a “level 1” country does not exempt you from adhering to NYS international travel rules. Some people are surprised to learn that the NYS DOH regulations out rank CDC.

That is my question. My brother can't go into Vermont from NY and they are vaccinated. The mil of my niece is coming for a visit and is an anti-vaccine. My niece is not happy. She has to test before the flight and then quarantine once she arrives for several days and then be tested again. I know it has been over a year and she wants to see the grands but get the vaccine first. We have agreed to wait till they are all vaccinated.
