Re the issue with having to fly through BA when flying around Argentina, most but not all domestic flights do connect there. Rather than "lose a day" as has been mentioned, I took advantage of the layover to go into BA. The airport is very close to the center (10 minute taxi ride). Given that I had checked my baggage through and already had my boarding pass for my connecting flight, I didn't need to get to the airport much before the flight (I returned about 25 min before 2nd flight). With a 4 hour layover, I was able to spend just over 3 hours doing a walking tour of the center! The cab cost about $7 each way.

Thanks for the great trip report. It saved me at least two weeks of planning for our trip in May!

I'm seeing what seem to be good prices at Solar Tours - is anyone familiar with them? Also, I'm curious what people would recommend as far as day excursions from Salta - should we go on our own or with a group, which trips are 'must sees' if we only have 3 days there, and what tour groups are worth it. Thanks!

To enjoy a rapid visit to Salta, I recommend using Movitrack (www.movitrack.com.ar) for day trips. They go in adapted trucks or 4x4 to places where regular excursions dont go. Very well organized. My wife and daugther came back fascinated. I also suggest exploring a new small hotel "La Candela" (www.hotellacandela.com.ar )A friend of us from London is there just know and she said that is so clean you can eat on the floor (it's not necessary, of course). We were just there in March and stayed at the Sheraton (not cheap, the food is horrible, and there were construction noises during the day!), but I think it was worth it. We had a falls view room, and sitting on the balcony at night with a bottle of Argentine sparkling wine (which we brought with us from BA), listening to the sound of the falls and looking at the Southern Cross and Milky Way was fabulous. It was also very nice just to be able to walk right to the falls. If a pool is important, the current pool looks very tiny and we never saw anyone in it. One other nice thing about the Sheraton was that we were able to get a late checkout, so after our last hike, we could go back to the room and get a shower before we went to the airport. We really enjoyed our time at Iguazu!
