Great thread! For my money, nobody captures the glories of our hometown, the Big Apple, like Woody Allen, especially in Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters, that one where Mia Farrow plays a floozie--I could go on...

Oh yeah-Three Coins in A Fountain--especially the opening with all the shots of the fountains.

The movie "Until September" with Karen Allen and an absolutely stunning Parisian actor is terrific for Paris lovers. Every time I watch it I think of Paris all over again. I believe it was filmed in the early 80's. I had a video store order it for me and it only cost about $10.00 and worth every penny. When I get heart sick for Paris I pop it in the VCR and I have done so often.

I have not been to Greece, but would love to go and I have a movie called "Summer Lovers" with a young Daryl Hannah and a very young Peter Gallagher and it was filmed in Greece and it looks wonderful and friends that have been to Greece told me they love that movie for the scenery.

A Christmas Carol-London. That mean old Mr. Scrooge. Made my father work so hard. But then the ghosts got him to get my legs fixed. And Mr. Scrooge got us a goose for Christmas and I exclaimed, "I want to stroke it." And the Church scene with father and me singing and Fred and his fiance, Churches filled to the brim with worshippers. And today nobody goes to Anglican Church services. What a change in 150 years.

I wouldn't necessarily say "best" captures, but I really like Eric Rohmer's film "Rendezvous in Paris."

I'm also looking forward to seeing a new film that recently played at the Seattle International Film Festival. A mystery/thriller set in Barcelona, it's called "Gaudi Afternoon."

There's also a film by Tony Gatlif, called "Mondo", that's set in Nice. Based on a novel by noted French author J.M.G. Le Clezio, it was the first of his works to be adapted for the screen, and it follows the adventures of a ten-year-old gypsy boy (the eponymous character) as he makes his way through Nice, meeting friendly strangers and startling folks with the question, "Would you like to adopt me?"

A Month by the Lake with Vanessa Redgrave, Edward Fox and Uma Thurmon is filmed in the Lake Como area - it is absolutely beautiful. Shirley Valentine filmed in Greece is wonderful. A Christmas Carol (with George C. Scott) was filmed in Shrewsbury, England. And, Enchanted April was filmed on the coast of Italy (Positano area, I think) and has absolutely beautiful scenery.

For Paris, I've always loved Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Enchanted April for Italian Riviera
Dangerous Beauty and Summertime for Venice
Shirley Valentine and Summer Lovers for Greece -- Summer Lovers is a dreadful movie, but the scenery is marvelous.

I saw a movie a long time ago with Christopher Walken -- takes place in Venice. Rather a "dark" movie. Does anyone know the name of it.

"Zulu" reminds me of almost every major American city.

Diane,
The movie set in Venice with Christopher Walken is "The Comfort of Strangers." Definitely not one that the tourist board would recommend!

Andrea Jun 28th, 2001 08:44 AM

I just rented Deja Vu-interesting premise w/great scenes in Jerusalem,Paris, the white cliffs of Dover and London.I tried to sit through Goya in Bordeaux but fell asleep.......

Enchanted April was filmed in Portofino. You can visit the house where it was filmed, called either Castello Brown or San Giorgio. I don't know how anyone could see that movie and not want to take the next flight to Italy.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Only You", with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr. It's mentioned quite often in postings about Positano, but it also contains wonderful scenes in Rome and Venice.

As another poster says, the Christopher Walken film was "The Comfort of Strangers". To my mind, the beauty of the scenery and the sexy scenes could never make up for the violent ending.

"The Sopranos"

Diane Jun 28th, 2001 11:55 AM

Thank you, Ann, for noting the Christopher Walken film. I would not recommend it. It just has haunted me for a long time and I wondered the name. The movie is disturbing and it left me upset. I guess they accomplished something if I remembered it for such a long time.
