What movie best captures your favorite city?
I was amazed at how well Thailand's summer palace was recreated for "Anna And The King". "Persuasion" transports me right back to Bath. On the other hand, I hear Russell Crowe's next movie will attempt to capture Stockholm with scenes filmed in Newark, NJ. Can't be done! So tell us--when you're stuck at home, what do you stick in the VCR to transport you abroad for an hour or two?
Dangerous Beauty just sends me to Venice, and though it's not a city, Rob Roy has great highland vistas that I just love... the first shot is just guys in kilts running across the hills...
According to an interview I read with Jody Foster "Anna and the King" apparently was made in Malaysia and not in Thailand. Can somebody confirm? Besides that she said she suffered more from the mosquitos that from the hot and humid climate.<BR>And my answer to your question is one of my oldtime favourites "Roman Holidays".
Oh, I forgot, about Paris...<BR><BR>Well, that would be Billy Wilder's<BR>"Irma La Douce" with Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon.
Yup, Anna and the King was filmed in Malaysia.<BR><BR>A few favorite city-movies:<BR><BR>Manhattan/When Harry Met Sally...: fairy-tale NY<BR>Dog Day Afternoon: real 1970s NY<BR>The Parent Trap remake: London<BR>La Dolce Vita: Rome<BR>Exodus: Jerusalem<BR>The Birdcage: South Beach, Miami<BR>
jhm: Glad you confirmed what I read a long time ago. Thanks!
It's true. The Thai government would not allow the filming to be done there because they were offended by Hollywood's earlier portrayals of their king. That's why, having been to the summer palace, I was curious to see how well it would be recreated--and it was done very well!

They play it practically every week here. Chicago- "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
Three Coins in a Fountain. I just gush tears when Clifton Webb suddenly appears for Dorothy McGuire at the Trevi Fountain at the end of the movie.
London is my favorite city. The movie "Jack the Ripper" captures what I love about London best.
OOOO Dottie. I love "Three Coins in a Fountain" too. Also see "Summertime" with Katherine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi (from 3 Coins) for wonderful Venice! Why don't I ever meet men like that?
Sharon--Count your blessings! After all, you haven't run into Jack the Ripper, either! And add my vote for Summertime and Roman Holiday (and while we're at it, for Gregory Peck!)
Paris is my favorite city; oddly, the movies I like are the ones with blood and guts like Frantic, la Femme Nikita and the Fatal Image. And the Maigret series for PBS.
Gigi because of the Parisian parks I love, you can soo the Bois, Monceau, I loved femme nikita because they shot a scene in one of my favorite places, The Tran Bleu. I once had dinner there sitting in the exact spot where she kills the Chineese man. Death in Venice and Don't Look Back-because they really capture the off season darker side of venice. Breathless, for the Paris we all love Too many to continue.
Well, I haven't gotten to Russia yet, but Dr. Zhivago certainly does make those long winters look awfully romantic!
"Tea with Mussolini" for Florence and San Giminango
"Doctor Zhivago" is great, but it´s kind of similar to "Anna and the king". Set in Russia, filmed in Spain. <BR>The big dam that appears at the beginning and the end is Aldeadávila in Salamanca province, in the Duero river before arriving to Portugal (huge and impressive). And the scenes in Siberia were filmed in Soria and Ávila. And yes, winter can be fiercely cold in Castilla.
Katherine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi in "Summertime" , capture like no others the splendor that is Venice.
"Lisbon Story" - of Win Wenders with Madredeus music.
'Crocodile Dundee' manages to capture my TWO favourite cities - New York & Sydney. Now can anyone come up with a movie that features Nagasaki ?
Great thread! For my money, nobody captures the glories of our hometown, the Big Apple, like Woody Allen, especially in Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters, that one where Mia Farrow plays a floozie--I could go on...
Oh yeah-Three Coins in A Fountain--especially the opening with all the shots of the fountains.
New York City--TAXI DRIVER
Clairton, Pennsylvania----The Deer Hunter. I cry every time my pal Nick loses a round of Russian Roulette.<BR>"Nick!Nick!Nick!NICK!"
<BR>'The Lost Boys' & Santa Cruz, California.
The movie "Until September" with Karen Allen and an absolutely stunning Parisian actor is terrific for Paris lovers. Every time I watch it I think of Paris all over again. I believe it was filmed in the early 80's. I had a video store order it for me and it only cost about $10.00 and worth every penny. When I get heart sick for Paris I pop it in the VCR and I have done so often.<BR><BR>I have not been to Greece, but would love to go and I have a movie called "Summer Lovers" with a young Daryl Hannah and a very young Peter Gallagher and it was filmed in Greece and it looks wonderful and friends that have been to Greece told me they love that movie for the scenery.
A Christmas Carol-London. That mean old Mr. Scrooge. Made my father work so hard. But then the ghosts got him to get my legs fixed. And Mr. Scrooge got us a goose for Christmas and I exclaimed, "I want to stroke it." And the Church scene with father and me singing and Fred and his fiance, Churches filled to the brim with worshippers. And today nobody goes to Anglican Church services. What a change in 150 years.
I wouldn't necessarily say "best" captures, but I really like Eric Rohmer's film "Rendezvous in Paris." <BR><BR>I'm also looking forward to seeing a new film that recently played at the Seattle International Film Festival. A mystery/thriller set in Barcelona, it's called "Gaudi Afternoon." <BR><BR>There's also a film by Tony Gatlif, called "Mondo", that's set in Nice. Based on a novel by noted French author J.M.G. Le Clezio, it was the first of his works to be adapted for the screen, and it follows the adventures of a ten-year-old gypsy boy (the eponymous character) as he makes his way through Nice, meeting friendly strangers and startling folks with the question, "Would you like to adopt me?"

Jersey City-On the Waterfront
A Month by the Lake with Vanessa Redgrave, Edward Fox and Uma Thurmon is filmed in the Lake Como area - it is absolutely beautiful. Shirley Valentine filmed in Greece is wonderful. A Christmas Carol (with George C. Scott) was filmed in Shrewsbury, England. And, Enchanted April was filmed on the coast of Italy (Positano area, I think) and has absolutely beautiful scenery.<BR><BR>For Paris, I've always loved Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant.
3rd attempt to post!<BR>Two fun American and well done movies are French Kiss w/Meg Ryan and Kevin Klineand Forget Paris w/Debra Winger and Billy Crystal.........<BR>
Enchanted April for Italian Riviera<BR>Dangerous Beauty and Summertime for Venice<BR>Shirley Valentine and Summer Lovers for Greece -- Summer Lovers is a dreadful movie, but the scenery is marvelous.<BR><BR>I saw a movie a long time ago with Christopher Walken -- takes place in Venice. Rather a "dark" movie. Does anyone know the name of it.
A Room with a View - Florence<BR>
"Zulu" reminds me of almost every major American city.
Diane,<BR>The movie set in Venice with Christopher Walken is "The Comfort of Strangers." Definitely not one that the tourist board would recommend!
I just rented Deja Vu-interesting premise w/great scenes in Jerusalem,Paris, the white cliffs of Dover and London.I tried to sit through Goya in Bordeaux but fell asleep.......
Enchanted April was filmed in Portofino. You can visit the house where it was filmed, called either Castello Brown or San Giorgio. I don't know how anyone could see that movie and not want to take the next flight to Italy.<BR><BR>I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Only You", with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr. It's mentioned quite often in postings about Positano, but it also contains wonderful scenes in Rome and Venice.<BR><BR>As another poster says, the Christopher Walken film was "The Comfort of Strangers". To my mind, the beauty of the scenery and the sexy scenes could never make up for the violent ending.
"The Sopranos"
Thank you, Ann, for noting the Christopher Walken film. I would not recommend it. It just has haunted me for a long time and I wondered the name. The movie is disturbing and it left me upset. I guess they accomplished something if I remembered it for such a long time.
what about Paris movies for the PG-13 set?
