A visit to both the National Portrait Gallery and Spencer House. Both delightful and historical and well worth the time.

Climb to the top of Primrose Hill for beautiful views of London.

Walk through Regent's Park--stop and have a picnic and then walk some more. If the roses are blooming, be sure to walk through that garden. It's gorgeous and smells so wonderful!

Sit in the front seats on the top of a double decker city bus (while you still can) and get a great and cheap tour of the city!

Go to Paddington and get the first train to Wales....

Spending your 35th birthday at The Tower of London. Oh wait, I already did that!

RosemaryM Mar 7th, 2004 01:23 PM

Take a narrowboat waterbus on the Regents Canal from Little Venice to Camden Lock. Slow and relaxing to rest the feet after all the walking.

Take a verger's tour of Westminster Abbey and leave plenty of time to be awed by the Poets' Corner.

Take an Original London Walks evening pub walk, and end up spending an extra hour or two in the last pub with the interesting people you met on the tour. Oh, yes--drink a few too many pints while you're there.

hi katiebug,

visit the oxfam shops all over london. there are one or two in every area. I found some really great souveniers and books. too many things in fact! better than a flea market because they are inexpensive and everything is in great shape.

this last trip, found about 30 books, 2 tea sets, 2 teapots, some beautiful scarves etc.

Be crossing Westminster Bridge just as Big Ben tolls noon.

Visit the rickety, tiny Old Curiosity Shop, the oldest shop in London.

Eat a warm Cornish pasty.

Walk through Green Park and see the ancient plane trees.

Try all the different flavors of Cadbury chocolate bars.

See Rodin's "The Kiss" at the Tate Modern with the one you love.

ttt.

m_kingdom Mar 8th, 2004 10:29 AM

Cadbury chocolate is cocoa flavoured margarine, vile stuff, please don't waste your money on this rubbish.

Katiebug Mar 8th, 2004 11:28 AM

Well than, m_kingdom, what would you recommend that *is* wonderful? Do you have a favorite?

Sandykins was merely saying what she loves. Certainly not everyone is going to have the same opinion. Pickle sandwiches aren't exactly my idea of a tasty treat, but obviously, they're popular with others. That doesn't make my opinion right over anyone else's, and I would never want to squelch someone else's pleasure (that is harming no one).

Let's put the focus on the positive, where it belongs. After all, that was my intent for the posting.

One of my favs is the Cabinet War Rooms. It is very easy to imagine the war still in progress.

I am also a big fan of exploring the pubs.

(We could also set up a search to see if M_K really exists. I understand you can bet on anything in London and my bet is No. Wonder what odds I could get?)

Meeting up with M_Kingdom in London and getting a private tour from him/her.

I'll be there May 11-May 18th...want to meet somewhere?

Then when I'm back from my trip I can tell everyone what a wonderful person you really are.

m_kingdom Mar 8th, 2004 01:29 PM

I like to remain a person of mystery, but I do love Charbonnel et Walker's chocolates, and Fortnum's Darjeeling Chamong tea.

Katiebug Mar 8th, 2004 01:53 PM

Now, see... that wasn't so difficult, was it?

travelbunny Mar 8th, 2004 01:56 PM

..for a change of pace and some reflection, evensong at St Paul's.

mclaurie Mar 8th, 2004 02:02 PM

Sit in the gallery at the Old Bailey & watch a trial.

Visit the Wallace collection

Go to a concert at St Martin in the Fields

Climb to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral for great views of the city, stopping at the Whispering Gallery on the way. The first part of the climb is a bit eerie since you are going up a spiral staircase in a windowless stairwell with no indication of how far you've gone or how far there's left to go, but eventually you come out at the outer walkway at the top, and hold on to your hat - and camera - it gets windy up there!
