Assuming it was the Power Ball or El Gordo, I’d first book us a trip on CMA/CGM’s 90-day around-the-world freighter itinerary (interested? See http://www.freighterworld.com/places/atw.html) during which time we’d decide on where to moor more regularly. On the list would certainly be somewhere in Britain (probably Edinburgh, maybe somewhere in London); somewhere in the south of France, probably the Perigord; a cabin with a boat on the Kenai River in Alaska (near Big Eddy – a place not a person); an air-conditioned bure on Taveuni Island in Fiji; and a pad on Telegraph Hill in SF. We’d also be welcomed by name in several hotels around the world. “Your regular suite, sir?” “Not if that noisy ambassador is next door again, Jacques.”

I'd go to one of those expensive resorts in the Maldives, followed by one of those expensive resorts in the Seychelles. Doesn't anyone here love islands as much as I do?

judith Oct 27th, 2001 05:51 AM

I'd go to a very expensive health farm and stay there till I got to the shape I want. Then I'd just travel round the world, going home every so often to see friends/relations. BUT I'd always travel with a hairdresser and personal trainer and cook who could help me look my best!!
Mind you, if you DID win money which meant you could travel for ever would life lose some of it excitement? It's something I've often wondered about. You read so many stories of big winners who seem to end up unhappy.

harry Oct 27th, 2001 09:59 AM

to Judith
can I send you my cv? I'm really rather a good hairdresser!!!

Anon, I'd go to Vermont for Christmas and visit my parents, and pay the travel costs for the rest of my siblings to go as well. And, hey, throw in my mother's sisters and brothers and a few - select- cousins as well. Then I'd hire a housekeeping/cooking crew so Mom wouldn't have to do a thing but visit. and I'd take my cat along because he's such a friendly guy and he'd love having all those people around. He gets bored with just me. Then I'd fly to the Grenadines or Andros Island or St. John and just bake in the sun for a month, hiring someone to turn me occasionally and bring me foo-foo drinks. I'd take my sister Sandy on that trip because she really knows how to party and attracts men like a magnet! Then, I'd head to a university for a few years of archeology study and spend the rest of my life with a little brush, dusting off artifacts somewhere. Somewhere with good wine.

I'd go to Mauritius first. Then to Las Vegas to the most expensive suite and hopefully gamble and win even more!!
For my base I'd pick London or Paris,or even divide my time between the two cities!!!!However, I'd probably end up divorcing my husband somewhere along the way as we would argue about how much to give relations. I'd want to give more than him( we've already had this conversation!!) so maybe we'd better not win!!!!!! Has anyone else had the same sort of disagreement?

What a great question to ponder while you should be busy working!! I think I would go to Australia - it's always something I'd like to do, but never get around to it. I'd spend 6 months doing research on wineries and then I would buy one, of course then having to travel all over the world to ply my wines! Private jet of course would be necessary for all those long hauls - who wants to do that in any "class" - I'd need a real bed!

The other, more lazy option, would be to permanently rent Richard Branson's private island that comes with cooks, etc... and just spend the rest of my days reading good books, drinking great wine, and having loads of people come and stay and have the time of their lives at my expense.

I used to play this game where I would watch the winning numbers being called on television. Right before the numbers were announced, I'd yell out some numbers. It was my little way of knowing 'what could have been.' I never won, thank god. :)

There are so many scenarios, but here's one: Take a one-on-one Berlitz class in Arabic (I've always want to do that but it's sooooo expensive), and go to Egypt with my own personal archeologist who could give me an in depth tour of the sights and their history. Wherever I went, I would invest the money to become fluent in the language.

Gordon Nov 3rd, 2001 06:46 AM

I know this is the Europe forum but I'd go on a tour of China, then spend a few days in Hong Kong and finally a couple of weeks in Bali. when I got home I'd start finding a summer home in either Greece or Italy ( or both!!!)

Isla Nov 3rd, 2001 01:08 PM

to London and all the exclusive shops I've longed to be able to afford!!!( but first I'll need to lose 2 stone!!!!)

wendy Nov 4th, 2001 01:22 PM

I'd love to go somewhere like Egypt or Greece and fund some archeological project, either a dig or reconstruction.Or some project which would benefit the locals. I'm sure if you won the lottery you would have to find some purpose in your life if you didn't HAVE to work!!!!!!!!!(it's nice to dream!!)

Susan Nov 8th, 2001 09:15 AM

I've certainly been thinking about this today. (I woke up to snow and spent three times as long getting into work today!!) Like the original poster I'd love to sail round the Greek isles, but not till Summer. Right now it would be somewhere like Australia- or ANYWHERE warm!!!! It's going to be a looooong Winter!!!!!!

scot Nov 8th, 2001 01:54 PM

I love the snow!!! My ideal place would be the Shetland Islands- so friendly!!!!

dan woodlief Nov 9th, 2001 05:09 AM

I have always wanted to do an around-the-world trip because you can bet I wouldn't be driving 42 miles to work for long. I would do it in a relaxed way, and of course we would take our daughter. Probably at least six months to cover parts of France, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, maybe Russia, somewhere in Africa (maybe Kenya), several weeks in Australia and New Zealand, back to China, a beach break in Tahiti, and end with Peru and Costa Rica. Imagine the photos and the complaints from relatives for taking the grandchild away for so long. I think I would spend most of that time in the countryside and some in major cities. Of course after that I would want to take at least 4-5 trips per year to more specific destinations.

Mary C Nov 17th, 2001 11:19 AM

Ah yes, the lure of winning the lottery!

Here's my list:
1)Ireland/Wales/Scotland/England (must visit Glamis Castle in Scotland to find out more about the famed Grey Lady & the "Monster" of Glamis
2)Paris-perhaps a "Gothic" tour of Paris
3)Then follow the campaign of "the maid of Lorraine" and hit all the sites associated with Joan of Arc-perhaps a walking tour ;)
4)Take one of those Mediterranean Odyssey cruises-go Odysseus!!
5)Easter Island
6)Climb Kilimanjaro -easier than Everest
7)Galapagos Island(s?)-the Darwin tour!
8)Travel the "Intercontinental" (or whatever highway) thru Mexico all the way down to Tierra del Fuego (need lots of $$ to bribe the locals to let me thru some of the countries)
...and that's just a start!
chris Nov 29th, 2001 11:14 PM

My last reply to this has been deleted! I have no idea why, I wasn't rude and didn't quote anything-amn't I allowed to go on a tour round the world?????!!

gail Dec 1st, 2001 06:50 AM

Health farm first - then London, Paris, Barcelona going to all the expensive shops and staying in the best hotels!!

rich Mar 8th, 2002 01:18 PM

I really fancy going to Vietnam first. Then I would have a villa in the south of France and have a flat in London!

susan Apr 11th, 2002 05:16 PM

thought my dreams had come true this week when I arrived back from a wonderful holiday in Barbados and found a cheque fro Littlewoods pools. For a while I didn't open it and dreamt about going back to Barbados and buying a villa there. Unfortunately when I eventually opened it it was £30!!
