We've all thought about it!!!

If you won the lottery where would your very first holiday be? For me, I'd probably be slightly boring and pick somewhere I've been to before (in Greece) so that I could "chill out" in familiar surroundings and plan where I would base my yacht!

fiona Oct 20th, 2001 04:23 AM

I would be off to Barbados!! I'd plan what to do with my win and then probably buy a boat and cruise round the Greek Isles!!

robdaddy Oct 20th, 2001 04:31 AM

Wow! Maybe it would be easier to decide where I wouldn' go first...but to answer your question, Paris! Hands down, case closed, full stop (as the Brits say). Speaking of the English, I also quite liked the time I spent in the south/southwest there, so maybe a couple of weeks based in Wiltshire with excursions on to Devon, Cornwall, and up into Wales. BUT...we still haven't made it to Florence yet, so maybe... Nyahh, first stop Paris. Are we there yet?

I'd settle into my small, but elegant apartment on Ile St. Louis [with a view of the Seine of course] -- perhaps their 2nd floor? I'd become a regular at a local cafe and develop relationships with the various merchants in my neighborhood. As this was proceeding I would be planning trips to Italy, perhaps Eygpt -- Greece of course -- but mostly I would be improving my French, my gallic shrug and enjoying belong to Paris;)

First I'd go to both favorite and unfamilar parts of a place I'd visited before and can't get out of my mind. That would probably mean a trip to the real boondocks of Sicily, plus visits to some of the sites in Sicily I missed on previous trips, plus a quick re-visit of Taormina, Then, I'd plan trips to parts of Greece that I've always wanted to see but missed, e.g., northerm Greece, Karpathos island, and other Greek islands that aren't too touristy. I'd search for a place to take Greek lessons so I'd be better prepared to get off the beaten track. Then I'd consider going to much more "foreign" places I've always wanted to see that are just too far away, with too expensive airfare, e.g., maybe India and definitely China, and I'd consider doing it the long, easy way, with mini-vacations in California and Hawaii on the way to and from China. But first, with money no longer an object, I'd take a Chinese language class and a Chinese history class at a nearby college, probably Princeton U. (since I'd remind myself that I don't have to economize by taking it at also nearby Trenton State, which probably doesn't have Chinese anyway). After getting China out of my system, I'd go back to visiting unfamiliar and/or favorite parts of familiar countries, e.g., in Italy: Calabria (unfamiliar), Umbria (mostly unfamiliar), Basilicata (a favorite), Tuscany (a favorite), more Sicily (a favorite); in France: Dordogne and Provence (favorites); in UK: Scotland (unfamiliar);, and maybe I'd try going to places I've never seen at all, e.g., Germany, Switzerland, Austria, or places I'd only seen long ago, e.g., Spain, Portugal. I'd also like to see Norway in the winter for just one day. I'd love to see the blue glow of the snow in very dim sunlight. But I don't knbow what I'd do with myself after seeing that, so that's why I say just one day.

to CMT
funny, I also would love to learn Greek
! I have tried with a home course but it was hopeless!! It is such a difficult language!!
Apart from cruising round the Greek Isles I would also take trips to Vietnam, China, Australia, Brazil and New Orleans. That should keep me busy for a while!!!

I will take a beautiful home, flat, apartment in the 16th arrondissement in Paris and walk my poodle or my bishon aound the area. My maid will do the cleaning and I won't go near the 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th in Paris. These areas are wall to wall with tourists. I will eat at all seven of the Michelin 3 star restaurants in Paris.

After finalizing the purchase of our winery and vineyards here in the California Wine Country, we will leave for Italy and settle into our villa near Sorrento. We will savor the smell of the lemon trees and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of our new Italian neighbors.

Trips from there will be frequent, now that we can afford it we will travel to those areas in Europe we haven't visited: Prague, Budapest, and perhaps Scandanavia. We will return to the south of France, and hopefully visit the Fowlers in Paris.

Wouldn't it all be glorious!

j

Would do the Orient express from New Orleans to Washington Dc. I have seen it on "Great Train Journeys" a couple of times on TV, and thought it looked great! Visiting all those southern cities and visiting their monuments and gardens would be fun.

If I won the lottery it wouldn't change me. I wouldn't go on any holiday at all. I wouldn't like to move somewhere else -I love my bedsit. I'd maybe splash out on a take-away every Saturday. Why does anyone enjoy going on holidays anyway?? Can't see the point myself. Anyway, must dash- the lottery is on the telly in half an hour. I hope I win!!!

anonymous Oct 20th, 2001 12:31 PM

oh dear- another week without a lottery win!! Greece will have to wait a little while longer- mind you the weathers not that great at this time of year!

julie Oct 20th, 2001 01:46 PM

I would immediately go to St Lucia ( in one of the most expensive hotels). I'd buy a place in the south of France . Finally I'd just love to go to that hotel in Dubai that is shaped like a sail and costs something like £500 a night!!!

cj Oct 20th, 2001 03:10 PM

Spain, Spain, Spain and maybe I would be able to get bull fight tickets. Then buy a Yacht and cruise the Med. After that fly back to the states and spend time in San Francisco, they to Chicago, they back to the Yacht in the Med.

wendy Oct 21st, 2001 02:42 AM

Italy to begin with!! Then I'd try places that I've only dreamed about- Japan, HK, Las Vegas and eventually New York!

a regular Oct 21st, 2001 02:47 AM

I would learn Italian....in Italy!

I would buy a spanish villa on a mountain top overlooking the ocean somewhere in Spain.

I'd fly to Nantucket and meet with a realtor to start shopping for waterfront property for my coveted beach house, with lots of bedrooms and bathrooms for all my friends and family who will visit. Then I would start planning an extended and luxurious African Safari, which would thrill my nine year old as its where he wants most to go!

minbrooklyn Oct 21st, 2001 02:38 PM

Prague. Then Paris for a month. Then a tour through the rest of France. Slovenia. I like the idea of an African Safari too.

rhona Oct 22nd, 2001 08:44 AM

I'd buy a house in Spain. I'd go on a safari and I'd also go to Egypt!!

Paul Oct 22nd, 2001 01:51 PM

Apart from the usual exotic destinations I would really like to go to Croatia! Everyone I know who's been there has said its a fantastic place. Funnily enough I never seem to see anything about it on this forum!!
