traveler, by now you must be confused with so many differents opinions...
Just dress comfortable..wear skirts, sundresses, slack, capris, good walking shoes and sandals.. I normally wear SAS shoes and sandals, because I have some problems with my feets and needs shoes that have a very soft leather.. You can wear short sleeves in church, but Saint Peter has differents rules. Always bring with you a large scarf to cover your arms, just in case you want to visit a church.. Regarding tennis shoes, if you feel comfortable wearing them, go ahead. . Nobody is going to look at your feet anyway, the locals are too busy with their life to worry what the tourists are wearing.. With millions of people going to Europe, i dont think that the locals are going to be scandalized and worry about what kind of shoes a tourist wear..

For our original poster/traveler_99:
Shoes are pretty much *the* most important item to get right in your packing. I'd take at least 3 nice looking comfortable pairs so you can switch them off (maybe wear rubber sole black ankle boots on the plane plus 2 others pairs in your suitcase). Take some time now & go shopping, see what fits your feet and style best. Then wear them around alot, so you are not breaking them in on your trip. As to why my fellow-fodorites are so dang cranky on this thread, I have no idea. Why open a post that clearly asks for advice about "travel wear" just to make a bunch of snotty and oh-so-(not)-clever comments? |
I have just bought 2 pairs of very comfortable Rockport shoes which are an Italian made shoe. A brown pair and a flat pair of short black boots which will go with everything. Am planning to buy fashion shoes in Italy. Having lived in Italy their dress is the same as ours in Australia going out wear something nice, for walking all day go for comfort. However French and Italian women do look better in a sack cloth!! but there is nothing we can do about this it is just something they have. Will be back home begining of May will let you know

Oaktown, don't take all this so seriously. The truth is, no one can give advice on what to wear because our tastes differ. We are allowed to say that all Black clothes are boring, IMO, and shows lack of creativity but really who cares. I think your posts are fun.
COMFORT is the key word when you feel comfortable you have a better time. |
Steve: Reading comprehension must not be one of your strong suits. I never said churches were exactly the same in europe and the u.s.,and I never advocated dressing inappropiately in any church.For the record, in the last 10 years we have traveled through 19 countries in europe and the middle east.One summer we used a eurail pass and traveled for 34 days. I`ll be sure to think of you while we are sitting around the pool at the BURJ-AL-ARAB hotel.
