This Forum Is Driving Me Crazy!

Yeah, me, too! I assume either for the obvious reasons (blank posts) or because it's getting virtually impossible to post anything on here. At least for me. Fodor's was really bad (about a year ago, I think) and then they supposedly moved to bigger servers. It did get a little bit better (before you couldn't even bring up posts to read, let alone respond) but was never that great and now it's going steadily downhill so that within the past month I can barely post anything at all. It just won't take or sits there for a LONG time and sometimes it comes back and doesn't give you the message or show your new post. At least I can usually read them now, I just can't respond. I think Fodor's has idiots for IT personnel probably, as this is ridiculous for a company of their size and I'm going to send them an e-mail to complain. For example, the last time it took them maybe 6 months to supposedly change the servers, and if they had competent computer technical staff, it wouldn't take very long at all.
True, things can sticky, especially in the evening hours. But, since this is a free service, I think I will keep my mouth shut. It is much, much, much better than it was this time last year.

I have had very few problems with this board. I wasn't on it last year so I cannot make any comparison. Occasionally it will not come up but over the last three months that I have been using it that has only happened maybe four or five times. Maybe it is your computer that is the problem. In any case, since it is a free, but very valuable service I think no complaint is in order.

I have had the same problems for the past 2-3 weeks, but it is much improved over last year.

As this is a free service I think one should not be too critical...maybe you pay for what you get!!!
We sometimes have trouble connecting but I think that is more a traffic jam than anything else. Anyway thanks to all for the info.

This is a great forum, try others if you think this one isn't to your liking.
It's inevitable, as more people discover Fodor's, the response will be slower. At least they have spared us that inane "We're really terribly sorry" message of last year. And Christina, I don't think calling providers of a free service "idiots" serves any useful purpose.

I've had very few problems since the Forum was re-vamped. Once in a while, during apparently high traffic times, screens are slow to load. So, I just check back later. I think that when you have difficulty posting a response, others are trying to post at the same time. At odd hours, no problems at all. I, too, highly appreciate that this board is available to us. I have e-mailed the "idiots" at Fodors and have received prompt (and highly intelligent) responses. In my observation, they are doing their best to provide and maintain this "free" service. Agree with whoever said you can always find another board.

I like Fodor's Forum ... unlike most forums you can actually see the post you're responding to at the left side of your screen. I also like that the topics are all on the left side of you screen as you read what's in one folder. Both features save me from having to hit "Back" continuously to jump to another topic or see what was written before.

Also, it updates very quickly. Fodor's site seemed a little slow when I accessed it from work (which is on its own server) around 8 o'clock in the p.m. Now I am logged on from home, it's 11 p.m. and I have no problem whatsoever.

I really like the clean format (plenty of white space) and organization of this site - it's much better than most other (not just travel) WWW forums I have been to.

Most of all, I like the type of people who use Fodor's compared with foul-mouthed ones who inhabit such places as The Thorn Tree. Few here seem to have a political agenda. Instead, they are genuinely helpful, knowledgable, and willing to share their experiences. Fodor's deserves our applause for their service -- I, for one, greatly appreciate it.

Kudos to the monitors of this web page!
They have kept the riff-raff off and the serious travelers on!
I have been on alot of travel pages and this one is among the best!
Advise to Christina: You may what to upgrade your modem. Getting a faster modem has helped me greatly on the internet.
Kittie

Count me among those who applaud this
Forum. It has helped me more than I can
tell you as we plan our trip. And we
will continue to use it -- no matter the
occassional wait.

I think this site is wonderful- I've never had trouble getting on. Thanks!
Beth Mar 30th, 1999 12:19 PM

has anyone else noticed that this forum has been a lot better the last few weeks? ever since the person from Fodors posted that they are working on it? I almost never have a problem anymore. Thanks Fodors!!!

Linda Mar 30th, 1999 04:56 PM

I love all the information on this forum, but I'm starting to panic about all the wonderful hints that are getting buried. I know I can search for past postings....but how long to "past postings" last before they go into the big cyber dumpster?
sabita Mar 30th, 1999 07:37 PM

actually, whats crazy is trying to keep up with the volume of information exchange that happens all the time. Im based in hong kong, and, apart from being occasionally slow, ive never had problems with the forums. i have checked out a lot of chat sites and forums on other sites, but this definitely beats them all in terms of value and quantity of information. so i think that speed is a small thing to sacrifice for advice.

my suggestion, christina, is that you try during non peak or late hours, or get your comp. specs. reviewed, because the problem does not seem to be happening at the fodors end of things.

good luck for that.
Sheila Mar 31st, 1999 08:25 AM

I have had no problems since finding the foruma month or so ago. I suspect the problems must therefor be traffic based. (I'm on line when most of you are at work or asleep)

I think it's great and hope not t have to give it up.

rosemarie Mar 31st, 1999 11:52 AM

the short time ive been on this forum has been very informative for me, i've spoken with other people about my concerns regarding travel and they've helped answer many, many questions that i couldnt get answers from a travel agent. as others have said, this is a free board. if you dont like it, its your purogative to move on. i'm just glad there are so many people willing to share their experiences and take time from their busy days to help me.

Noreen Apr 1st, 1999 05:01 PM

We've only recently discovered this Forum. So far we've had no problems. I find it an interesting way to share information with people from all over and I appreciate the service Fodor's is offering.

Bill Fleites Apr 1st, 1999 11:35 PM

This is the best travel site forum on the Web, period. What makes it so is that the people that use it are positive, friendly, and are always willing to help others. We do not need or want negative, disrespectful people to participate in this forum. It is really unkind and unfair to characterize the persons at Fodor's who provide this FREE service as "idiots". Specially since there is a good chance that the problems being experienced may be due to either the capability of your computer/modem, or your service provider, and not the Fodor's servers.
