I'm a woman who lives in Italy and I wear a travel vest sometimes -- the camel-colered kind covered with little pockets. It's where I keep all the receipts the Italians keep handing me.

If you don't want to look like a tourist, I find carrying bags of groceries (as mentioned above) does make you look like you fit in.

This fitting in question strikes me as silly, but it is persistent. Just how "untouristy" does someone look dressed in black and at the same time he or she is wandering around with a guide book, city map, and camera in their possession?
I decided that the best way to "fit in" is to wear jeans! |
Suze,
Especially in the Colosseum! Also, carry a baguette when you go up the Eiffel Tower. |
Truthfully, I recently returned from a trip to Rome, Venice, Florence, Lucerne, Paris and London, and in all honesty cannot tell you what people were wearing. Obviously they were clothed, but I don't particularly remember noticing any particular pair of shoes, or any particular outfit that anyone was wearing, and I doubt anyone would remember what I was wearing. Did I fit in? Not sure no one seemed to pay any particular attention to me. I was too busy enjoying the sights myself.

If you want to dress to fit in in London, you need to wear....
PEARLS When walking in Hampstead Heath I was surprised to see 3 women walking with their dogs wearing boots, casual clothes, and PEARLS!!!!! It was a Sunday afternoon so perhaps they had just gotten out of church and were in a hurry to walk the dogs and didn't take them off. |
