The Euro closed below $1.29 today.

Should I change my hotel in Paris from a 2* to a 4* for a visit in Sept?

It's been hovering around $1.30 for a week or two; I don't think it's all that significant at this point or indicative of a long term trend....

I've hesitated to post anything about the exchange rate since early last year, when I had predicted it would go to $1.25 and people threw me out of the room (virtually). But I'll try again: The slowly rising interest rate in the U.S. will continue upward and the euro will continue ever so slightly downward, perhaps to about $1.20 or thereabouts, by the time of your vacation. That isn't enough to justify a two-star upgrade in your hotel. Good luck.

Well a 10% decrease on a $1000 is $100 and better it be in my pocket than theirs. I am hoping it falls even more in the next 2 weeks when I go over. Stranger things have happened so you never know.

Our budget is $2,700.00 for our trip to Paris without airfare, About 2075 Euros!
820 for hotel room, 700 food, 100 car,
we are on a tight budget so if the Euro goes to $1.25 or lower what a great benefit it would be to us.

Hooray, just when I plan to visit, what a lovely gift :) Lower Euro = more souvenirs?

We consumers will never see the "institutional" rate(s), but every little bit helps.

Well look at it this way, when it was up ~ $1.38 (I don't remember exactly what the high was) there was talk of it peaking at ~ $1.50.
But with my luck in life it will swing back and far beyond just in time for my Rome trip next month :(. Regards, Walter

When you "reserve" a hotel, they can only charge you when you arrive-therefore you get the exhange rate at the time of your visit? Not when you booked the room. Is this correct?

yes, hotels aren't banks. But generally you don't get any exchange rate with a hotel, you pay them in local currency or the charge is made on your credit card in euro or whatever their currency is. They don't have anything to do with your personal exchange rate usually.

Hey Rex, I hope you don't think that was correct German. To start with, &quot;Euro&quot; takes the masculine article, not neuter, and it's a noun, so it has to be capitalized, ergo &quot;Der Euro.&quot;

Yes. If they quoted you a rate in euro, you pay them that many euro, regardless of the exchange rate.
