The Fallig Euro

Hi all,

The Euro closed below $1.29 today.

Should I change my hotel in Paris from a 2* to a 4* for a visit in Sept?

((I))

ira Feb 4th, 2005 12:54 PM

Oh, gack.

That should be "Falling".

wren Feb 4th, 2005 12:54 PM

I just saw that on xe.com. Let's hope it keeps on going down!!!

xyz123 Feb 4th, 2005 12:59 PM

It's been hovering around $1.30 for a week or two; I don't think it's all that significant at this point or indicative of a long term trend....

Wayne Feb 4th, 2005 01:06 PM

I've hesitated to post anything about the exchange rate since early last year, when I had predicted it would go to $1.25 and people threw me out of the room (virtually). But I'll try again: The slowly rising interest rate in the U.S. will continue upward and the euro will continue ever so slightly downward, perhaps to about $1.20 or thereabouts, by the time of your vacation. That isn't enough to justify a two-star upgrade in your hotel. Good luck.

frankdaddy Feb 4th, 2005 01:10 PM

Well a 10% decrease on a $1000 is $100 and better it be in my pocket than theirs. I am hoping it falls even more in the next 2 weeks when I go over. Stranger things have happened so you never know.

beachbum Feb 4th, 2005 01:10 PM

Hi Ira,
Not wanting to be the wet blanket, but to paraphrase the words of my bank's foreign exchange analyst, no. If he's wrong take the $25 you've saved and buy another bottle of wine.

TexasAggie Feb 4th, 2005 01:13 PM

Am I the only one who thinks ira was joking about upgrading his hotel room?

Hi ira :-)

That is good news about the Euro - now if only it will drop another 30 cents before next Thursday when we leave for Germany...

marcy_ Feb 4th, 2005 01:23 PM

Ira, I saw the title of your post, and thought, fallig?
Is this something like 'twas brillig, and the slithy Euros did gyre and gimble in the wabe....

jeffwill4you Feb 4th, 2005 01:23 PM

Our budget is $2,700.00 for our trip to Paris without airfare, About 2075 Euros!
820 for hotel room, 700 food, 100 car,
we are on a tight budget so if the Euro goes to $1.25 or lower what a great benefit it would be to us.

FainaAgain Feb 4th, 2005 01:34 PM

Hooray, just when I plan to visit, what a lovely gift :) Lower Euro = more souvenirs?

beachbum Feb 4th, 2005 01:39 PM

Aggie,
No, you're not. This is one of Ira's uncharacteristic trolls.

mikemo Feb 4th, 2005 01:42 PM

We consumers will never see the "institutional" rate(s), but every little bit helps.
M

ParadiseLost Feb 4th, 2005 01:48 PM

Well look at it this way, when it was up ~ $1.38 (I don't remember exactly what the high was) there was talk of it peaking at ~ $1.50.
But with my luck in life it will swing back and far beyond just in time for my Rome trip next month :(. Regards, Walter

kimberlyb Feb 4th, 2005 01:50 PM

When you "reserve" a hotel, they can only charge you when you arrive-therefore you get the exhange rate at the time of your visit? Not when you booked the room. Is this correct?

Christina Feb 4th, 2005 01:55 PM

yes, hotels aren't banks. But generally you don't get any exchange rate with a hotel, you pay them in local currency or the charge is made on your credit card in euro or whatever their currency is. They don't have anything to do with your personal exchange rate usually.

rex Feb 4th, 2005 01:55 PM

Ja, ja, sicher! Das euro ist wirklich F&Auml;LLIG (<i><b>due</b></i>) - - due for &quot;ein Wertverfall&quot;!

Best wishes,

Rex

Spygirl Feb 4th, 2005 02:03 PM

Hey Rex, I hope you don't think that was correct German. To start with, &quot;Euro&quot; takes the masculine article, not neuter, and it's a noun, so it has to be capitalized, ergo &quot;Der Euro.&quot;

xyz123 Feb 4th, 2005 02:05 PM

And after being told it was headed to $2, the &pound; closed today at1.8751206011...

Can $1.85 be far behind?

ira Feb 4th, 2005 02:19 PM

Hi kimberlyb
&gt;When you &quot;reserve&quot; a hotel, they can only charge you when you arrive-therefore you get the exhange rate at the time of your visit? Not when you booked the room. Is this correct?&lt;

Yes. If they quoted you a rate in euro, you pay them that many euro, regardless of the exchange rate.

ira Feb 4th, 2005 02:21 PM

Hi TA,
&gt;Am I the only one who thinks ira was joking about upgrading his hotel room?&lt;

No. Beachbum also got the joke.

((I))

soccr Feb 4th, 2005 02:25 PM

A 200-Euro hotel room costs $270 at 1.35; $260 at 1.30; $250 at 1.25; and $240 at 1.20. So the range isn't all that huge, although it all adds up over several nights paying for a hotel, and food, and so on.

I did all those calculations in my head (what a whiz-kid!) but knew ahead of time that the Euro would have to drop quite a bit further before we could upgrade to a 400-Euro room.

Huitres Feb 4th, 2005 02:30 PM

I told you all this was going to happen, no one believed me!

ira Feb 4th, 2005 02:36 PM

What was going to happen, Huitres?

((I))

111op Feb 4th, 2005 02:42 PM

Somehow I think that the dollar will still depreciate over the year, but of course I'm glad that I didn't open a bank account with Euros as I had planned to. I'm still thinking about it though.

TexasAggie Feb 4th, 2005 02:45 PM

If some of the people who &quot;knew this was going to happen!&quot; could please predict the exact rate May 13 - May 25 I'd be most appreciative.
Any takers??

rex Feb 4th, 2005 03:31 PM

Okay, spygirl! Whoops...

Huitres Feb 4th, 2005 03:44 PM

I was referring to the recent (01/07/05) thread &quot;Whoo Hoo!! How Come Nobody's Cheering?&quot; of the euro dropping; and specifically, to my comment:
===================================
Author: Huitres
Date: 01/06/2005, 04:39 am
Message: The talk amongst my Consulate General friends is that the euro is going to drop and be &quot;fixed&quot; (perhaps &quot;maintained&quot; is a better word) at 1.10 to 1 in order to even out the disparity in the currency trade. This is supposed to happen very soon - hush!
===================================

Let's hope it keeps dropping - I want to book that 4* hotel too!! :)

Patrick Feb 4th, 2005 03:45 PM

Well, I CAN accurately predict that the exchange rate will become much more favorable this summer than it has been recently! How do I know that? Because I'm NOT going to Europe this summer, that's how I know!

jsmith Feb 4th, 2005 03:45 PM

On Feb 2, UBS forecasts the Euro to be $1.40 in Dec-05 and $1.50 in Dec-06.

Judy Feb 4th, 2005 03:46 PM

Thanks, Patrick, those of us risking our savings appreciate your sacrifice!

richardab Feb 4th, 2005 03:48 PM

damn it and i just made my reservations to sydney!

Neil_Oz Feb 4th, 2005 05:03 PM

Both Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are betting that the US$ will continue its slide. I don't think I'd care to argue with either one.

Nikki Feb 4th, 2005 05:12 PM

Marcy, great minds run on the same track.

marcy_ Feb 4th, 2005 07:27 PM

I'm glad to know there's at least one other Lewis Carroll fan out there...:-)

Betsy Feb 4th, 2005 07:34 PM

I sure hope it keeps on fallig....

dln Feb 4th, 2005 07:42 PM

Ira, you're going to have a lot of explaining to do at the Bonaparte. :-(

ucsun Feb 4th, 2005 09:28 PM

ira,

i'd say wait for $1.27 and then upgrade to 1st class. :D

Ronda Feb 4th, 2005 10:09 PM

Wish I'd brought home more than $50 worth of eueros when they were at $1.18. (That's been two years I believe).

lyb Feb 4th, 2005 10:27 PM

Maybe we can all promise to do a daily prayer to the Exchange Gods...I'm going the first 2 weeks in October and it sure would make a big difference if the Euro kept dropping....

Oh, please Exchange God, I promise to be good and not ask, &quot;how much is this in real money?&quot; I promise to educate myself in the demonition of the currency to where I am traveling, oh, dear Exchange God, I promise to spend a lot of and help the local economies of the countries I visit, if you please, please make the Euro go down. Thank you Exchange God.
