thereyet, you can delete downhill mountain bike riding, BMX racing and I think demolition derby from your list, we do these in Oz. Ness 07 are you from Victoria? I think in NSW Rugby league is much more widely played, or at least teleforecast.

thereyet Apr 19th, 2007 01:05 AM

Ah yes , they are almost all international today but... with the exception footsall and underwater hockey they are truelly american born and bread.
I think arena football is still all ours though. thereyet

audere_est_facere Apr 19th, 2007 01:56 AM

Rodeo is an American sport and so is competitive eating.

Kate Apr 19th, 2007 02:16 AM

"Wild cow milking"

Now this is the one that caught my eye. Don't think it'd catch on here in Britland as I can't recall ever seeing any wild cows. Would it work with wild ponies? We've got some of those.

alanRow Apr 19th, 2007 03:06 AM

Americans are clever - they invent sports where America always has the best team.

audere_est_facere Apr 19th, 2007 03:29 AM

Unlike us who invent sports only for us to get beaten in them.

We're good at bog snorkelling though.

PalenQ Apr 19th, 2007 06:16 AM

<Don't think it'd catch on here in Britland as I can't recall ever seeing any wild cows>

i've heard a lot about 'mad' cows in Britland!

PalenQ Apr 19th, 2007 06:19 AM

audere est farce:

Rodeo is an American sport and is very popular but some of the biggest stars come from Brazil so it's spreading.

And about NASCAR only in U.S. - just saw a story on the Roll Over Derby that recently took place in London - where folks got points for rolling their cars over the fastest i believe - that may be a uniquely Brit 'sport'

BTW who won the Spurs-Thugs rematch?

audere_est_facere Apr 19th, 2007 06:22 AM

BTW who won the Spurs-Thugs rematch?>>>>

It was a draw - so they go through on aggregate score. The rotters.

It's the London Derby on Saturday - That's always fun.

PalenQ Apr 19th, 2007 06:31 AM

<It was a draw - so they go through on aggregate score. The rotters.>

what? explain to this ManU fan how this works - aggregate score - i thought both matches ended in a draw.

The London Derby - you me the roll over contest?

thereyet Apr 19th, 2007 07:32 AM

Audere, did underwater hockey evolve from bog snorkeling? thereyet

audere_est_facere Apr 19th, 2007 07:42 AM

what? explain to this ManU fan how this works - aggregate score - i thought both matches ended in a draw.>>>>>

Nope it was 2-1 to Seville over there - so 4-3 on aggregate

The London Derby - you me the roll over contest?>>>>>

I hope we don't roll-over! It's Spurs v Arsenal at White Hart Lane on Saturday - the Capital's big football match. One of the world's great sporting rivalries.

alanRow Apr 19th, 2007 08:50 AM

The only rollover in the UK is the National Lottery

audere_est_facere Apr 19th, 2007 09:17 AM

I dunno - what about essex birds?

sheila Apr 22nd, 2007 10:53 AM

This board always makes me want to find out things so...

the biggest participation sports in the UK are

walking (46%);
swimming (35%);
keep fit/yoga – including aerobics and dance exercise (22%);
cycling (19%); and
cue sports(17%)

Then it was

Swimming
Soccer
Golf
Weight training
Running
Tenpin bowling
Horse riding
Tennis

Scary, really.

audere_est_facere Apr 23rd, 2007 02:05 AM

I was at a cricket match at the Oval yesterday - and I am pleased to tell you that it wasn't in the least bit Americanised.

I even did something typically British - I got sunburned.

annhig Apr 23rd, 2007 02:28 AM

Hi, you'all

Sheila - you missed out fishing - often touted as the biggest UK participator "sport" [ I guess it's the last word that causes the problem as it's not much fun for the fish!]

audere - you can't have enjoyed that last goal more than i did -the look on my DD's face was a picture [she's a gunners fan - where di i go wrong?]

as for a fan base, the BBC were saying that 100 million chinese were going to be watching the Ding v ronnie match [in the snoooker world championship, for those not in the know] and that they have 10 million registered palyers. That's a lot of balls. [and tables and cues].

regards

ann

audere_est_facere Apr 23rd, 2007 02:50 AM

I was rather pleased by it. And a goooner in the family? I refer you to the well known song.....(to "que sera sera")

"When I was just a little boy, I asked my mother, what should I be,

should I be Arsenal, should I be spurs,

here's what she said to me:

Wash your mouth out son, and go get your father's gun, and shoot the scum!

Shoot the Arsenal scum!"

A bit extreme I'll grant you, but fair. Firm but fair.

PalenQ Apr 23rd, 2007 06:55 AM

audere est farce: were they serving sushi at the Oval?

Do Spurs and my club, ManU ever tangle?

Padraig Apr 23rd, 2007 07:06 AM

PalenQ asked: "Do Spurs and my club, ManU ever tangle?"

Now, that is a good question from a knowledgeable fan. Anybody know the answer?
