Also while cricket may not be being americanised David Dein has just left the Arsenal board - so it looks like the filth might be being americanised any moment now.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of chaps. |
<I'm having a hard time thinking of a "US sport" played only in the United States.> How bout Lacrosse - maybe some colonials in Canada play it but i think it could be strictly an American sport. And its popularity is growing by leaps and bounds - incredible number of kids play it on school teams - really thousands and thousands and growing by the day. Both boys and girls - i note that girls may rarely participate in UK and European sports which still seems to be a male bastion both on a participatory and fan base. At least don't hear about many female football hooligans! |
Of course the greatest British origin game, golf - but to me it's not any more a sport than bowling or darts.
|
What about the United Kingdoming of America? Didn't David Beckham and his wife recently decide to inflict their presence on us (I think we have enough of our own over-paid athletes and starlette wanna-bes, thank you).
When will the U.K. stop pushing their way of life on us poor defenseless Americans? We are losing our culture to these Brits. Next thing, we'll be drinking warm beer and spelling "Americanization" with an "s." |
<<How bout Lacrosse - maybe some colonials in Canada play it but i think it could be strictly an American sport>>
It is the national sport in Canada, and it's popularity grows more and more every year. Lacrosse was apparently invented in N. America and named by French observers. If you watch NLL (Professional Indoor Lacrosse) it is a viscious sport. It almost seems like the rules are 'there are no rules' It is a lot of fun to watch!!! |
Maybe we should stop speaking English and make Spanish the national language?
|
I think Americans stopped speaking English a long time ago.
I hear newscasters and others who should know better say things like, "boys read slower than girls" - and I hear it all the time. Apparently, the country has done away with adverbs. But if we switch to Spanish, I'm sure we'll muck that up too. |

"It is the national sport in Canada, and it's popularity grows more and more every year."
Not THE national sport, but A national sport ... along with hockey, according to national decree. |
Any sport that foisters Don Cherry as its spokesman and any country in which to so many Grapes is a national treasure indites itself as a fraud.
Take the fighting out of hockey and the sport's popularity declines greatly. The WWF on skates (and steroids) |
hmmm, yes fighting can get out of hand in hockey, and there is no place for 'enforcers' in the game, but to say that they are on steroids with no proof, now come on Dick Pound ;-)
Hockey players need to be slim and agile, you couldn't put a guy the size of Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire on skates and expect him to excel at hockey. The speculated problem in hockey is stimulants not steroids. |
It would be fair to say that in Australia our national sport is cricket, in the summer in any case. In the winter the biggest participation and spectator sport in the country is a code of football called Australian Rules Football which is a game that is native to Australia, although in Ireland a game with some similarities is played - Gaelic Football.

Fighting in hockey?
Methinks you are remembering the goon-old days. Most teams are down to 1 or no cement-head enforcers. The game has sped up and most teams I think would rather have a scorer that some dead weight. As for lacrosse...it is our "national" sport in the sense the someone (government?) has publicized it as such, since it has been around longer than any other sport in the country. For passion, I'd think hockey is the one sport that brings a city/the country together..thus our true national sport. |
Right back to your post PalenQ.
The usa culture is not required in Europe, nor is it desired. In fact, the usa has possibly the least respected 'way of life' on this planet. Cricket is not a European thing, by the way,......but then,as an american, how could you know this. As for starwhatsits,...........I'd rather have a pint............or anything else that doesn't hail from usa have a nice day! |
