So Calif Fodorites

After reading posts about east coast fodorites getting together both here and abroad, I thought that we might do the same thing here in the LA area. How about a potluck. I can volunteer my home as being somewhat central (Long Beach) or I am opoen to anyones suggestion. We could do a barb-a-que with different people bringing there favorite european dishes that they have learned to make. My specialty is English Trifle.

Thyra Aug 22nd, 2000 11:44 AM

Art, sounds great, hope more So. Cal's can make it. Give a date and, pending our trip overseas, We will be there (though I am not such a great cook, can I bring some kind of European coffee or plastic ware?). Thyra from Hollywood.

I live in S.O.C and would be interested. I could bring a spaghetti sauce my daughter learned from her landladyin Formia, Italy.

Diane Aug 23rd, 2000 07:06 AM

Art-- Fantastic idea! Count me in, except for the month of September. I'll be in Spain. Adios.

Robin Aug 23rd, 2000 08:10 AM

I'm local too, and I got some wonderful French recipes from the chef on a recent barge trip. I think it would be a kick to put faces to names. You can email me directly as dates come together.

luigi Aug 23rd, 2000 10:12 AM

Art,
I live in Arcadia, just a couple of freeways from LB. Keep me posted when you get a firm date, also.
Ciao,
luigi

Art Aug 23rd, 2000 02:29 PM

Good response 6 so far. Any more??
It looks like some of us are traveling during September. Ann, I'll also be in Spain during the first 2 weeks.
Does anyone have a problem with October?
Early or Late?
Should be fun placing faces with names!
Diane Aug 23rd, 2000 02:41 PM

Art-- I daresay you'll probably get a lot more takers (after they get home from work.) Re: October--later is better for me, but I'm flex. Thanks, Diane (not Ann.)

Thyra Aug 23rd, 2000 02:49 PM

We will be in Greece from October 5th through the 23rd, but I think that still leaves a week or 2 at the end.

Thyra Aug 23rd, 2000 02:50 PM

At the end of the MONTH that is....
luigi Aug 24th, 2000 09:36 AM

Art,
We leave for Italy 23 October and get back 3 November. So, depending on what you meant by late October, that won't work for us. Given all of our travel schedules, this could be harder than arranging the trip to Europe! ;-)
luigi

Art Aug 24th, 2000 11:30 AM

Thanks Luigi and Diane for your responses. (Sorry about renaming you diane). I guess that we are lucky, having the best weather in the would year round. Would early november work for everyone??
Robin Aug 24th, 2000 11:31 AM

I'm in, and if the travelers can come, maybe we'll have photos to look at!

Thyra Aug 24th, 2000 11:32 AM

Early November works for me, maybe I will be able to cook something by then.

luigi Aug 24th, 2000 02:50 PM

That sounds good to me. If it is on 11/11 or later, I will probably have my photos developed and maybe even in an album.

observer Aug 24th, 2000 03:20 PM

This thread is so typically So. Californian. SET A DATE, INVITE PEOPLE AND HAVE A GOOD TIME -- THOSE WHO CAN'T MAKE IT - CAN'T MAKE IT: TOO BAD, SO SAD!
You can't please all of the people all of the time. (Especially down there).

Buyer Aug 24th, 2000 03:21 PM

Observer, just shut up and provide water, since you are not invited!

Bill Aug 24th, 2000 04:48 PM

These really are typical southern california responses, because we care about each other down here. Everything's a happy happening.

russ i Aug 24th, 2000 04:51 PM

Art,

3 things:

1) Great idea. I'm in the San Fernando Valley. Count me in.

2) Any before October 14 or after November 5th is great for me.

3) Inspite of what Observer says, I lived in Italy for 2 years and NOBODY takes longer than Italians do to plan a date.

P.S. I'll be happy to provide some cucina Italiana.

Heather Aug 24th, 2000 04:58 PM

Count me in!
I could bring crepes or curry or...?
Sounds like a great time!!!

Diane Aug 24th, 2000 05:00 PM

I live in Northern Orange County. I'd love to meet other Fodorites. I travel a bit on the job, so I'll make it if I can. late October/early November works much better for me than September.

xxx Aug 24th, 2000 06:09 PM

Waah! I wanna come too, but I live in the SF Bay area. What about it NoCal residents?

Holly Aug 24th, 2000 08:49 PM

Yeah! I'm in Reno, and I'm kind've feeling like the redheaded stepchild right now...

Art Aug 24th, 2000 08:55 PM

xxx you could hop on to United, it would only take you about 2 days to get here.
Holly on any other airline you could be here in an Hour.
Art Aug 24th, 2000 09:00 PM

It seems that everyone so far will be in the area on Nov 12th and 19th. The 19th will be the weekend before Thanksgiving so the 11th might be better. Both of these are Sundays as I teach a class on Saturdays. How does this sound?
Art
russ i Aug 24th, 2000 09:52 PM

Nov. 11th or 12th sounds great.

Diane Aug 24th, 2000 10:12 PM

November 12 sounds great. I'll be happy to bring something (maybe Greek?)

Keep us posted if this is to be a coordinated meal or a true potluck.

Maira Aug 25th, 2000 03:58 AM

I am from New York. I am jealous.

Art Aug 25th, 2000 07:11 AM

Sorry, I ment the 12th not the 11th.
So far looks good. To answer Diane's question I would think that a pot luck would be fun. I would supply the bar-g-que goodies. Co-ordinated only in that not everyone brings the same thing.
Art
Robin Aug 25th, 2000 07:21 AM

The 12th is okay by me!

luigi Aug 25th, 2000 09:44 AM

Count me in for the 12th. Holly and xxx are certainly invited. Observer, of course, is NOT!

Russ, where in the Valley? Maybe I can talk you into picking up my potluck item so I don't have to drive out to Encino on my way from Arcadia to Long Beach? I will gladly pay you with any left over lira! :-)
Ciao a presto,
luigi

Thyra Aug 25th, 2000 09:53 AM

11th or 12th sounds good, for us too. Please email me with directions etc. SOOO in lieu of cooking somthing, (which NO right minded person wants ME to do) what else do you need? Wine, Beverages, beer, plastic wear? Coffee???? You name it.

Diane Aug 25th, 2000 06:54 PM

Art-- Since my month in Spain fell thru, any date is fine. I was thinking of bringing Greek garlic lemon chicken, i.e., if you would b-b-que it. (Sorry Holly-- no creamy garlic soup, but I'm still looking.) Otherwise, I'll bring whatever you need.
Thyra--what about picking up some yum pastries from a Med/Middle Eastern deli? Just a suggestion, being culinarily challenged myself.
Art-- what did I tell you about many takers?

Charles Aug 25th, 2000 09:11 PM

Art, I'm third from the top response. You or someone needs to set up a web page or equivalent like a bride's list type of display so that the necessaries can be identified, organized, and committments to provide be made by email and perhaps with phone numbers. Who knows, we may even have a wine wholesaler in the group. I am not that proficient with my PC or I would start it I would be willing to collaborate with someone. I live in Laguna Hills, off the 405 at El Toro. Nov. 12 suits me. Phone is 949 859 1535. Charles

Art Aug 25th, 2000 09:12 PM

Diane, sorry about your trip falling through. I'll be leaving next Saturday for Portugal and Spain for 2 weeks. Hope to have my pictures done and in albums before the get together.
Everyone: This looks like its going to come together pretty good. I'll get down to more details after I get back and send directions with my address to everyones e-mail and get all of the other details settled. This is exciting!!
Art
Alisa Aug 26th, 2000 11:36 PM

Count me in! I am in LA so email me with the details and I will bring something yummy!

Alisa

luigi Aug 28th, 2000 01:39 PM

Art and Everybody,
Have any of you given any thought to whether you are going solo to this party or bringing your sig oth or spousal equiv or spouse or travel companion or....?

On the one hand, it would be nice to bring your 'other half' and at the same time, as Russ said in a post recently, his travel companion has no interest whatsoever in the planning, beating to death, etc, we all seem to thrive on.

I guess if we all brought a 'non-travel junkie' they could stay in one part of the house so they aren't bored by us and/or don't annoy us. What is the consensus?
ciao,
luigi

Marcie Aug 28th, 2000 02:04 PM

What a great idea! I will certainly try to make it as well. I'll bring some European wine OK. Let me know a date. Thanks. Marcie

Thyra Aug 28th, 2000 02:24 PM

Great idea for pastries. I'm on it.
Thyra
