IMO, bad idea...I like Freedom of Speech. No censorship. Don't empower the jerks who pop up on this forum - just ignore them.

Nikki Nov 9th, 2005 10:04 AM

Be careful what you wish for.

ncgrrl Nov 9th, 2005 10:06 AM

I don't like the idea. I'd pull stuff someone else would keep and vice versa.

But, IF I had that power, heeheehee (insert evil grin).

julia_t Nov 9th, 2005 10:06 AM

I agree with everyone who thinks it a BAD idea.

francophile03 Nov 9th, 2005 10:09 AM

It'll be a huge conflict of interest to put a member in charge of monitoring the forum. I've seen this happen in another forum and the person in charge has a major power trip. He's deleted members who disagree with him and his cohorts.

I also vote for Ira. Or perhaps David West who would keep us all in our places though the use of posts liberally sprinkled with British slang, a lot of which I think he makes up, but to great effect.(:

Scarlett Nov 9th, 2005 10:13 AM

LOL, when I read franchophiles response, I imagined a couple of posters here, using all of their various screen names, deleting us all , one by one..until there would just be about 4 people left moderating themselves!

hdm Nov 9th, 2005 10:19 AM

I moderated myself once. But the I saw a good psychiatrist and got cured.

Scarlett Nov 9th, 2005 10:21 AM

hdm, You are one of the lucky ones!! :D

Gardyloo Nov 9th, 2005 10:22 AM

Well I didn't think it was that bad an idea, and said so on the other board. But vox pop, baby.

Or maybe vox pop is not so hot. Better to have the principal's office available rather than schoolyard fistfights and cliques, I guess.

Barbara Nov 9th, 2005 10:28 AM

Bad idea.

The training would have to include intensive study of spelling, grammar and punctuation. Plus, prerequisites would surely include fluency (spoken and written) in at least one European language other than English(for this forum).

cigalechanta Nov 9th, 2005 10:29 AM

If it's gonna be-I'll vote for Budman-he loves everybody :)

Scarlett Nov 9th, 2005 10:30 AM

Than I will nominate Kal too. I think he can be bribed :D ((D))

Sarah Nov 9th, 2005 10:34 AM

I have seen this on other sights, it works when there is training.

Love what I see on the rick steve's thread where items on a forum simliar but not the same as a chatroom thread are edited....Not sure fodors can afford that but a lot of duplicate info is axed and entire threads are discontinued because of a few trolls.

Sarah Nov 9th, 2005 10:49 AM

meant to say entire threads are not discontinuted because of a few trolls

It's interesting to me that so many people assume the worst. Believe it or not, there are a few people who contribute to this forum who have not been involved in fights with other posters. Would anyone object, for example, to Ben Haines being a monitor? (I feel certain he would decline the honor.)

But I think the point is that a monitor is trained. If a monitor started deleting anything s/he didn't agree with, many of us would complain and the monitor would lose his/her position. No?

I think once you thought about it, a lot of people would not want to be monitors, because you might occasionally have to chastise or delete someone who has become a friend.

Statia Nov 9th, 2005 11:07 AM

I'm in the "bad idea" camp, too.

Eloise Nov 9th, 2005 11:09 AM

Another vote for "Forget it; it's a bad idea."

111op Nov 9th, 2005 11:13 AM

"If a monitor started deleting anything s/he didn't agree with, many of us would complain and the monitor would lose his/her position. No?"

This may be true, and it's a good point, but a bad monitor can inflict some serious damage to the forum that can take weeks to repair.

The forum isn't perfect, but I'm just not sure that PK's idea is a good one.

Fodor's is not exactly fast to react to people's wishes and criticisms. When people complain, who knows how swift they'll react?

milliondollarbbw Nov 9th, 2005 11:17 AM

I would say to be careful about having a forum monitor.....I am more along the lines of if I don't like what someone is posting, I just won't read it.

It would depend on the monitor. Some monitors may be overzealous in their censorship.

Just my two cents.
