the comment from Fodors editor Peter Kay
"I am considering putting out a call for Forum monitors from the community, who would be given admin powers after some training. Still not sure if it is a good idea. thoughts?" can be found as a recent posting on this thread http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34700737 Perhaps European travel Fodorites would be interested in commenting |
Bad idea - that is his job to do.

Agree with degas.

Sounds to me as though Fodors is looking for free labor.
It would be nice to have forum monitors who know something about Europe, though! |
I think it's a terrible idea because power goes to people's heads and there are too many screwball ideas by certain people on here as to what they like and don't like. I don't think anyone from the "community" has the right to be censoring others, and the last thing we need to someone who thinks he has an official right to harangue others.
The few forums I know of that have community monitors are ones that I consider irritating and stop going to -- ie, AOL, which I left years ago for that exact reason. The problem is this job attracts a lot of power-hungry people, as you might expect. It also creates a bad environment when one person is in some position of authority and goes around commenting and kibbitzing on others threads. It just creates a bad atmosphere, like you are kids being watched. |
Horrible idea. I know how often I've been attacked for being rude when I was simply offering advice -- I suppose I'd have been banned hundreds of times if it was up to some of the posters here.
Meanwhile, I can't understand if this is an important issue why the editors can't make a specific post about it? These sorts of suggestions seem only to appear buried in threads made by other posters. If this is an important issue or question, then why wouldn't one of the editors start a thread asking for opinions on it? |
In a word. Don't.
|
I don't see how this can be implemented. Even if the idea is good, how would you decide on who should get to be monitors?
Voluntarily? By popular vote? It doesn't seem to make much sense to me. |
Horrible idea, unless they pick Ira.

Meanwhile, this thought came up on the other thread when an editor mentioned that it is impossible for them to find the "bad apples" (wrong words, but right idea). So, that's what the emails to editors will do. If some new poster appears and is rude and nasty from the start, it is easy for other posters to alert the editors and then they can take a look at those posts and respond accordingly. What's wrong with that?
|
I agree with Christina, there are too many posters who do not like each other and hold grudges.
That would be putting power in bad hands. |
I'll volunteer. I love everybody. ((l)) :-) ((b))
|
Whew!
I was thinking that maybe the thoughts should be posted on the original thread, as that is where "News and Announcements" are being posted, not sure if Peter will check here for comments. Maybe you could all cut and paste what you wrote here? Or not. |
Very bad idea IMO. If Peter is trying to attract more members I think he will find it has the opposite affect.
As already noted, one can send an email to the editors when a post is objectionable. |
Bad idea.
((c)) |
I am curious what the "training" we would be provided with in order to qualify would entail!
|
Don't even THINK about such an idea..we already have a couple of self-appointed "assistant editors" not to mention their little minions who tail along behind them.
Elaine, I think the fact that this "comment" (and please correct me if I am wrong) wasn't apparently broadcast on this forum as a whole speaks volumes, also. |
I can't speak for Peter, but my understanding is that general forum 'administrative' topics are being discussed primarily under the separate forum called News and Announcements.
|
OOOHHHH IF I WERE THE KING :*
|
I would not have know about this if Elaine hadn't posted on the Europe board--I don't read news and announcements. I think it is a bad idea. There are already self appointed monitors who create turmoil, I have no wish to deal with an essentially annonymous individual with illusory power.
