I will say again that if you are asking for, say, 3 checks for 11 people, it will not be a problem. The computerized cash registers certainly do not mind spitting out 3 different bills. And particularly if you are paying by card, the waiter certainly does not mind either.

If you want more than 3 checks or if you are paying by cash, problems may ensue.

It is the same in France, in spite of whatis being said above and it is not rude to ask. Just tell the waiter wjen ordering.

Its not ideal, but in London it is acceptable to split the bill, but it is usually done on the bill divided by number of credit card basis, and I would not do more than maximum 4 cards. I generally dine with people that love wine just as much as I do, so not a problem!

If math is involved, splitting the bill based on actual consumption, then you should do the math yourselves, and not put the onus on the waiters to split the bill up. Generally don’t approve of this approach. Make sure that you understand if the tip is included (most are now, but if not, add to the bill or leave cash.).

I find this an embarrassing end to the evening, so would avoid, if at all possible. It would be fairly straightforward to rotate responsibility for paying on the night, then settling the bill up next day, based on consumption.

I would not even consider it in France!
