Restaurants and hotels in Paris 6th

Hello, following advice from fellow posters I need some help. Four of us (2 couples) are spending 2 nights in Paris on the way to a wedding mid December and arrive 9.40am from Hong Kong. We have all been to Paris before so don't really need to do all the "must see's", we'd prefer to relax and soak up the feel of Paris. We would like to stay in an area with great atmosphere and good cafes, wine bars etc., so are leaning toward the 6th. I have read the reviews on hotels and still can't make a decision. We are all early 30's, like good food and wine, and would like to keep our budget to 300e per night per couple. Any advice to hotels and restaurants.....or should we look at a different area? Thank you!!

Hi hk,

We always stay at the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th. From 128E dbl w/bkfst. It is located near 3 metro stops. Has AC and an elevator.

Hi hkgirl,

This question has been asked many times. Have you done a search on this board under paris hotels and restaurants or just searching on paris? Most people are looking for advice on the 3, 4, 6, 7 arrondisement in Paris so you're sure to find lots of info here.

adrienne May 14th, 2008 04:44 AM

And like Palenque I am trying to be helpful as a search will give you lots more info in addition to the responses to this post.

BTW as nice as the Bonaparte Hotel is, it is not a 300 a night Euro hotel. If that's what you're looking for you may be disappointed.

adrienne May 14th, 2008 04:48 AM

I meant 300 Euro a night hotel. :)

hkgirl May 14th, 2008 05:08 AM

Yes, I have done a search and probably just confused myself even more with too much choice! Thanks Ira, I have looked at Bonaparte and it looks ok, I guess I want the perfect decision made for me!!! The hotel doesn't have to be up to 300e per night, just preferably no more. Has anyone heard of Saint Gregoire or Hotel Verneuil. Also Hotel Luxembourg Parc - has anyone stayed here, in what type of rooms - are the classic rooms tiny? Many, thanks again!!

francophile03 May 14th, 2008 05:34 AM

I've stayed at the Verneuil twice. It's in a nice position more in St. Germain although it's formally listed to be in the 7th district. It's a block and a half from both Blvd. St. Germain and rue Jacob. Further on is rue de Buci.

The hotel itself is traditionally decorated, very small standard rooms (not uncommon in Paris though). If you can stay in a deluxe category as they are more roomy. Bathrooms are in marble and have shower/tub combinations. I really like the hotel as it's quietly located yet not far from the activities in the area.

JulieVikmanis May 14th, 2008 05:56 AM

On a recent trip we deviated from our usual selection in the 5th and stayed in the 6th right by the Carrefour de Odeon. We were not thrilled with the hotel (Hotel Odeon) but loved the area. Your budget would encompass the Relais St. Germain, which is directly on the Carrefour and a very nice hotel (though they are doing some remodeling right now which you'd want to check). Since you'd be staying at the hotel, I'd also expect that would put you in good position to score a table at Le Comptoir, the Yves Camdeborde restaurant of the hotel and the toughest reservation in town right now.

Other nice places in the area to check on are: D'Aubusson, which gets raves here all the time, Buci, and Madison--all of which always look very nice as we've walked by them and as I've collected their brochures.

Good restaurants in the 6th include:
Ze Kitchen Galerie--a Pat Wells favorite, Les Bouquinistes, Le Comptoir mentioned above, and one of our favorites La Mediterranee, just up the street from the Carrefour de Odeon. A more casual, but equally good place is Fish La Boissonerie. The 6th is a nice arrondissement to stay in and to eat in. Enjoy

Restaurants in the 6th where we ate last year on our trip:

Le Temps Perdu
54, rue de Seine
75006 Paris
01 46 34 12 08
http://www.le-temps-perdu.com/

€17,80 for 2-course menu; or €24,70 for 3-course. DH & I had 2-course only.

Entrées - DH had their homemade tomato tartare (very light and delicious), I had soup with mussels + vegetable julienne

Plats - DH had rabbit with mustard sauce, I had duck confit with hash browns

Overall pretty good food though my duck was on the dry side. Dinner for 2 was €50

Le Petit Saint Benoit
4, rue Saint-Benoît
75006 Paris
Phone 01 42 60 27 92
http://www.petit-st-benoit.com/

This place has been around for years and was packed on the Friday night we went. Tables were close together.

I don't think they have prix-fixe menus. We ordered a la carte.

DH had escargots and then plat du jour which was panfried sole with boiled potatoes.

I had soup de legume, then grilled lamb shank with mashed potatoes.

For desserts, DH had a lemon meringue which is served in a hollowed-out lemon! I had another fromage blanc with miel.

Our bill was €50,50 for 2.

The Madison Hotel on St. Germain is mentioned above by Julie Vikmanis. The location, the breakfast, the rooms, and the public spaces are all top quality. However, I do recommend upgrading to a room overlooking the street as the back rooms are rather dark.
Another good one is the Relais de Medicis near the Odeon.

oberost May 14th, 2008 09:45 AM

My wife and I have stayed at the Pas des Calais <http://www.pasdescalais.com> It is right off the blvd St. Germain and withing walking distance to many shops and restaurants (some famous) Close to Metro. Very nice, from our point of view, check it out.

Weekender May 14th, 2008 09:47 AM

I have stayed at both the Verneuil and the Luxembourg Parc. Both are very charming with the Verneuil being very "French". Francophile is correct, however, regarding the room sizes as the standard room is too claustrophobic. Pricewise, my deluxe room at the Verneuil was the same as a superior at the Luxembourg Parc. (Will be going back to the Lux Parc in the fall at the rate of €279/night. You might also consider the Hotel de l'Abbaye-request a larger room. All three are wonderful places to stay.

smrt2 May 14th, 2008 09:57 AM

We love the Hotel Le Regent, 61 Rue Dauphine. For restaurants, Chez Maitre Paul, Chez Dumonet "Josephine", had a great meal at the Relais Odeon which someone else mentioned. You can find my trip report by clicking on my name which goes into much more detail on all of the above.

JulieVikmanis May 14th, 2008 10:17 AM

TPAYT, glad to see your rec for the Relais de Medicis. We've looked at it a couple of times and thought it would be very nice. Another we looked at and liked was the Hotel le Senat on rue Vaugirard. it's been recently remodeled in the trendy, minimalist style but has some elegance as well.

And I can heartily second the rec for Chez Maitre Paul, especially the chicken in jura wine with morel mushrooms, creamy and wonderful.

grandmere May 14th, 2008 07:41 PM

And a hearty second for Hotel le Regent, rue Dauphine.

And just around the corner is a good, "homey" restaurant, Chez Fernand, on rue Christine.

Fantastic everyone, thank you so much. I will have a good look at the hotels and restaurants mentioned and let you know. Many thanks!

My husband and I are in your age group, and we really like Villa D'Estrees in the 6th; it's very close to the Seine, and near the border of the 5th, so it is very easy to walk everywhere. It should be within your budget; rooms are large for Paris, and it's nicely decorated. We are in Paris now, in an apartment a few blocks west of that hotel, and the location is even better than we remembered.

I am going to try a new place in December, the Hotel Saint Vincent. www.hotelsaintvincentparis.com

JeanneB May 16th, 2008 10:16 AM

I second Relais St. Germain and restaurant Le Comptoir (hotel guests snag seating first). Lovely hotel and, like Julie, I love the location.

celticmoon May 17th, 2008 05:55 AM

I would recommend Hotel de l'Abbaye and stay in a suite. Our courtyard room was enormous with a large marble bathroom. Beautiful decor and convenient walking to most sites.

hkgirl May 18th, 2008 03:36 AM

Thanks Weekender, I just had a look at Hotel Saint Vincent and it looks really lovely plus they have offered us a really good rate of 210 euro for a superior room. Are you staying here over Luxembourg Parc in December? Has anyone stayed here before? Also, RobinMM the Villa D'Estrees looks great - do you all rate these above Luxembourg Parc and D'Aubusson? Getting more confused I think!!!!

gruezi May 18th, 2008 08:26 AM

hk,

I stayed at the Luxembourg Parc in March. I had a front room that was newly renovated and was beautiful and charming with a great bathroom. The room was small but fine for my daughter and I. I saw some larger rooms in the back while there with king beds. Our room was 2 very small twins. (Seemed narrower than a US twin to us.) But, very clean, cheerful and charming. I think we had room 405 but can't really remember...

The location was not as good for me as the Hotel D'Aubusson, but I didn't like our room at the Hotel D'Aubusson. Tired and dark. I had the superior room there. It was spacious and with very nice linens, amenities and service but for the price was a bit underwhelming.

Breakfast at both places is nothing to die for...with the HA being better although with poor service.

Overall the concierge at HA was excellent.

I'm in the process of finding a room for one night in June and thought I'd try another spot. I looked at the Villa d'Estrees mentioned above but it is 300 Euros a night...I may try for a better price - I'll see what L'Abbaye and Le Regent are offering.

good luck!

gruezi

francophile03 May 18th, 2008 08:54 AM

Not a budget place at all L'Abbaye is charging 367 euro/night for a large double and suites begin at 461 euro/night.

flsd May 18th, 2008 10:34 AM

ira must have that same post on speed dial. "We always stay at the Hotel Bonaparte ..."

anneeby May 18th, 2008 12:57 PM

Since Weekender spilled the beans then I must confess I have been holding out on you all about the St. Vincent. My husband and I went to Paris in January to find the "perfect" Paris hotel. We stayed in 4 lovely hotels and looked at countless more rooms, explaining that we were looking for a hotel for a future trip. Then we stumbled on the St. Vincent. It is exquisite! Wonderful linens, beautiful furnishings, marble bathrooms with towel warmers, and a "lobby" that is more like the living room of a fine home. Enjoy the fireplace and the best coffee I have ever had! Just please, keep it between us, the European business people have discovered it and book it way in advance. A group from German Vogue came in after us and booked the whole hotel.

anneeby May 18th, 2008 01:07 PM

The St. Vincent is actually in the 7e right near the 6e.

Travelnut May 18th, 2008 02:02 PM

anneeby, that and some other 'new' hotels were outed by my France Today magazine, which I shared back in March...

At the Madison, corner rooms facing the Blvd. St-Germain are absolutely wonderful--and large, too.

shooshy May 19th, 2008 12:30 AM

I'm really interested in the comments regarding the Saint Vincent as I am also holding a booking there for mid June. I'm thrilled to see it described as "exquisite".

Do let us know what you decide hkgirl!

hkgirl May 19th, 2008 04:06 AM

Well I've made my decision and gone with Hotel Saint Vincent. They have given us a discounted rate for two rooms for two nights in December - 210 euro per room per night for a Superior Double. They have been very helpful and prompt via email and I just spoke to them over the telephone and they were helpful and friendly. Now - where to eat??? I have a couple on my list, any comments and/or additions would be appreciated...
Le Petit Troquet
L'Epi Dupin
Cafe Roussillon
Le Florimond
Any ideas for a great breakfast - pain au chocolate, croissant etc?
Also any favourite wine bars...Thx!!

JulieVikmanis May 19th, 2008 05:07 AM

For wine bar, make it a point to try Lavinia, on Blvd. de Madeleine just off the Madeleine square. It's actually more of an enormous wine shop with an attached restaurant. They will sell you any bottle in the house (and they claim to have 3000 different wines) at retail cost to drink with your lunch (they only do lunch--or snacks, because they close at 8 p.m.) We love their charcuterie plat and you feel wonderful dining surrouded by wine.

hkgirl May 19th, 2008 05:29 AM

Thanks JulieVikmanis, I will have a look. Also has anyone popped into either Au Sauvingon or Juveniles?

GiuliaPiraino May 19th, 2008 05:35 AM

BM for october trip!

amyb May 19th, 2008 05:39 AM

hkgirl, I ate at L'Epi Dupin last month and loved it. I would also recommend looking into Le Christine which was our favorite meal of the trip. Both I have written up here in my trip report which you can get by clicking on my name.

For breakfast, run, don't walk, to Bonbonniere du Buci on rue de Buci for their famous eclairs. We did this on more than a couple days, walking nearly 15 minutes from our hotel based on a recommendation I read in a food blog and they were, hands down, the BEST eclairs I have ever had (and we tried others in and around Paris and they never came close). And I dare you to try the foot-long one...that is my only trip regret, that I didn't try (although it probably would've been breakfast AND lunch!)! ;-)

JulieVikmanis May 19th, 2008 06:03 AM

I second the recommendation for Le Christine. You can see my review by clicking on my name and scrolling down to the post entitled--To reserve or not 12 mostly happy meals in Paris

Weekender May 19th, 2008 06:12 AM

hkgirl:

I will be at the Luxembourg Parc in October and the Saint Vincent in December (perhaps when you are there.) Fireplace will be perfect in December.

shelly_m May 19th, 2008 06:18 AM

>run, don't walk, to Bonbonniere du Buci on rue de Buci<

This was right around the corner from our apartment, and we went there every night for our pastry du jour. I did not try the eclairs. Bummer!

I did, however, try a chocolate mint candy. It was truly the best piece of chocolate I have ever had. I almost took the metro from Ecole Militaire on our last night (we were staying in the 7th on that last night) just to get a few of those chocolates to take home, but we ran out of time.

The guy who was working there every night was very nice, and insisted that we try several of their candies. YUM!

In July 2006, we stayed in a decent place in St. Germain Des Pres (6e)named Hotel le Clement. The cost is 120 to 140 euros per night, breakfast extra (10 euros). It was clean, centrally located, but don't expect a large room as you will find rooms in Paris very small in comparison to N America. Ask for a twin room as they are larger. It is a close walk from there to the Seine, St. Germain des Pres cafes, pretty much everything. We walked to Notre Dame, Tuileries, the Louvre, and the Seine. To eat, recommended is Bergamot restaurant on the corner which had fixed priced menus in the 25euro range. Closest Metro station is Mabillon. I was there in summer, so can't speak as to the winter activities. Enjoy your trip! We liked Paris so much we are returning this June!

GiuliaPiraino May 19th, 2008 01:25 PM

We rented this apartment for October. It's in an excellent location, and it has a lovely view. It has a double bed and a sofa bed, but you may want to opt for a 2 bedroom, since sofa beds can be hit or miss as far as comfort goes. The area is wonderful, on the Ile St Louis in the 6th, close to lots of fun stuff. Great place near green spaces for relaxing, or sit by the Seine and watch the world go by. I loved workign with this company, they are very professional and everything is very above board and predictable, I like that. http://www.parisaddress.com/paris-ap....php?ref=ORLE4
The cost was about 210 euros per night. But if your budget is 600 euros per night, you can surely get a large 2 bedroom. You may want to try guestapartment.com, they have gorgeous properties in many areas. http://www.guestapartment.com/apartment_list.html
