Hi,
We are a couple of Aussies coming to Ireland for three months to work, any ideas of how to get around? Should we buy a second hand car and then try and resell it or do you know of any rental firm which would not be too expensive for that period of time?

Its a pain in the neck to buy here as Insurance is high and more if you do not own an Irish License. Also you need to pay car Tax and it needs an NCT (You can get away with it for 3 months if you don't have it). Car tax depends on the type and power of the car and can be from 1-200 per annum You can't just pay 3 months of this it must be paid for the year when it expires. Try to get a rental deal with an agency. They may strike a deal with you.

I just think you will spend more buying and have a harder time getting rid of the car. You need a reliable car if you are driving around the countryside.

Sounds like a good time though....

Siobhan - car tax can be paid for just 3 months! I just renewed mine last month and only paid for three months because I'm buying a new car.

That said, though, buying a car just for three months probably wouldn't be worth it. Where are you planning to live? You may not need a car all the time depending on where you're going to be.

Thanks a lot for your advice. We will be living in Letterkenny most of the time but want to travel around so will definitely need wheels.

Look into leasing/renting and maybe contact some car dealers in Letterkenny maybe they will do a deal and rental agents. You don't want to end up with a car you can't sell. Have a good time
