This thread has been great - I received so many tips and can't wait to try the different restaurants. Thanks to all, especially Joan! Looking forward to meeting you in Paris, Joan! -Roberta |

weekender....
You should have planned a trip to Paris instead of London!! Joan |
Hi Joan,
I have loved reading about your time in Paris. Thanks so much for all of the great info! I'm in Paris right now and was looking for some unique Halloween candy to take home as gifts to some children on my list. I tried at La Grande Epicerie and they have theirs in stock but will not be putting it out right away. :-( By any chance, have you seen any in the stores in your neighborhood? We had dinner at Violon on Saturday night and I should have paid closer attention to the shop windows. I usually find really cute things this time of year. Thanks for any help and enjoy the rest of your time here! Peg |
Joan:
The original plan was to fly to London, spend a day, and take the Eurostar over to Paris for a few days and fly home from Paris. Don't quite know what happened to that plan! Plan B is 3 days in London. So, now, I will be arriving in London just about when you are departing CDG. We want to hear all about your fancy dinner tonight, too. Weekender |
Peg,
I haven't really noticed, but I will take a look at the chocolate shops as I go by. I would think that they would have them now... Hope you are enjoying your stay.. Joan |
weekender,
You have not had the pleasure of a meal at "Fables"? If you like seafood, you will be very pleased. I was there a couple weeks ago with the Dudleys. We all enjoyed it. Tiny place. Some "manifestation" going on. A traffic mess returning from lunch in Montmartre with friends. Champ de Mars was blocked and many gendarmes. It may cause problems for friends arriving and also the 2 gov. people. Hope we make our reservation time! Not much I can do about it. Don't know about the gov. people..they may want something after dinner...could take them to Cafe Constant for cognac or livlier action at Cafe Max! We shall see. You might have missed a fun evening out in Paris! Another time, perhaps... I'm sure you will have a good time in London. The Eurostar is still messed up because of the fire. a bientot.... Joan |
Joan,
I am missing all the wonderful things you are doing in Paris. I will sure try to get there in the spring to join the group at a Spring dinner in Daniel's new location. Will have to wait and see. How was the lunch with Elle, Pat and Jim in Montmartre? I wonder if you had it at Le Cafe Qui Parle. Small but really nice place with good food, Pat and Jim's corner cantine as they call it. Enjoy the rest of your time in Paris. April is not that far away so the wait is not very very long..... By the way, are the Dudleys from the San Francisco area? I saw a thread on a GTG in San Francisco scheduled for October 24th. It would be the last day of my annual conference with the tribes but I might be able to join (if not too exhausted)to meet some Fodorites. Bisous, Lilia |
Hi there Joan-in-Paris,
Thank you so much for checking that corner of Bosquet! Please do tell this terribly non-french speaking individual what on earth are/is Cancale huitres? Just to join in with all this Paris talk of gorgeous restaurant fare I sat on my terrace at sundown this evening and enjoyed two glasses of very cold Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin! It was divine! |
Oysters from Cancale, in Brittany, are supposed to be the very best!
|
Tod,
Grandmere has told you...yes, hutries are oysters and Cancle is where they came from. I just had some excellent ones at "Fables" tonight. This is the timr of the year for them. We had an excellent dinner..nice company, nice comversations, good food and great wine!! I'm also sleepy! a bientot..... |
The weather is warmer..might hit 70 this weekend...but I won't be here!!
Our dinner was really great last night. My friends arrived about 5:30 and the 2 from DC about 6:30. We had some champagne here and then walked over to "Fables". 2 of us had oysters as an entree....they were big, fat beautiful and delicious oysters!! 3 of us ordered the St. Pierre and raved about it. One had scallops and I don't remember what Jean-Paul had...We all enjoyed everything. Stayed there and visited for some time. Walked back to apt..pointed the two fromDC in direction of Ecole Militaire to catch metro. We visited a bit and went to bed. Jean-Paul went down to the corner wonderful boulanger and we have the nice expresso coffee maker with those little insert things. We enjoyed our breakfast and they were off. I went out for some last little gift buying and needed to stop by Cafe Max to tell Valdo about the 3 gals who are arriving tomorrow and that they might be stopping by. Also that I was leaving on Friday...nothing I could do but say I would return for lunch today..he will fix me the truly excellent salad that I have enjoyed there. I called my friend who has been joining me on some of my dining and asked if she would like to meet me at Cafe Max..I think she will. I called an reconfirmed dinner tonight at l'Epigramme and also called Spring..Daniel always answers...to double check arrival time for lunch tomorrow.... When am I going to pack...driver picks me up at 6:30 Friday morning!! a bientot............. Joan |
Peg,
I happened to be on r. Cler this morning. The candy shops were gearing up with items...one had very cute stuff and peeking inside looked like there might have been Halloween items..... Joan |
Aah Joan,
I don't hear any regret yet about having to leave fabulous Paris - must be because you already have return plans guanranteed! You are SO lucky! As October has passed the first week please tell me if the foliage is turning gold yet? I desperately want to come over for a photographic shoot next year but don't want to mis-time the best of the Auntumn leaves. |
Joan:
The restaurants in Asheville must be in a panic when you are gone....do you keep them afloat the rest of the year? Looks like I will have good weather in London-a perfect fall weekend. Weekender |
Tod
The change is beginning. I actually thought I might see color here and be home for our color which is usually late Oct. This year was so dry it was thought to be earlier. weekender Two or 3 restaurants that are regular places for me have kept up somewhat on my trip. A co-owner of one is coming to Paris next April with wife, 2 children and in-laws. I helped them with a Paris Perfect apt. This is a first trip to Europe for all of them. I will be here for a few days of their trip! Needless to say they are excited! I will have a Cafe Constant apron waiting for me when I arrive in April. I will have to see who is going to get it!! Yes, I think you are going to have good weather for your trip to London. I'm sure you will have a good time! Bon Voyage! a bientot.......... Joan |
Hi Joan,
Thanks so much for the update on confections! We spent the day in Honfleur so I haven't had time to look around myself. I shall get over to Rue Cler in the next couple of days and stock up. Thanks again and have a safe journey home. Hope to get to meet you on one of these trips in the future! Peg |
Hi Joan,
I will be in Paris with my 15 year old daughter from November 17 to 23. I have sent an e-mail to Gallery Lafayette for reservation at their fashion show (no answer after 2 days), but after reading your review I think we will prefer the Bristol, however I can't find the way to make a reservation in their webpage. I will appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks a lot! |
