Paris in March

I will be staying im the St. Germain area for a week in March. Since the weather will be on the cool side, are there any cafes, jazz clubs, spring fashion shows, or other activities anyone can recommend. I also would like to take a train to Versailles one day. Thanks for any suggestions...

Sandy Feb 26th, 2001 03:44 PM

Hi Patt,

When are you going to be in Paris . . . we'll be there Mar 21-24 . . . we've already found Fodorites to meet for drinks on the 21st and 24th, if you're there then, want to join us? We can compare travel stories.

Sandy

ldsant Feb 27th, 2001 12:09 AM

Hi Sandy. I'll be in Paris (coming back from Belgium) on March 21 - 23. Would enjoy hooking up with you guys if possible. Please email me. Thanks.

dorene Feb 27th, 2001 01:03 AM

Stayed in the same area a couple of yrs ago in March. Being from Hawaii, it was rather chilly, occasionally drizzly but nice without the crowds. For a week stay, you will find excellent food drink and sights, so just stop in where ever it suits you. The only "bad" experience I had was on my last day, a "local" expat in the Mouftard open market recommended a must try...Chartres...nothing more than a tourist trap. Versailles is worth the trip.

Dana Feb 27th, 2001 03:11 AM

I will also be in Paris 3/22-3/27. Would love to meet you all too!!!

s.fowler Feb 27th, 2001 03:29 AM

Any takers for March 16-20?

wintkat Feb 27th, 2001 04:10 AM

We'll be in Paris 15-19. Would like to get together for drinks.

Sandy Feb 27th, 2001 06:44 AM

Dear Dana & Idsant,

I emailed you both at your yahoo address. Hope you both can join us . . . and anyone else out there who will be in Paris on Mar 21-23!

Sandy

Tony Feb 27th, 2001 07:14 AM

We will be there the 17th through the 24th. Hotel Muguet. Please email me. Sounds fun.

Sue Feb 27th, 2001 07:56 AM

Sandy misspoke... We're meeting on March 23, not 24, the day we arrive and the day before they leave. Hope others can join us. (Dana, Idsant, Tony, etc.) We have pageszoom URL of Cafe Francais where we're meeting (Place de la Bastille). Sandy will keep me informed.

Sandy Feb 27th, 2001 08:37 AM

Thanks Sue,

Yes, I got my fingers on the wrong keys . . . everybody . . . we're meeting at Cafe Fracais, 3 de la Bastille, on Fri, Mar 23, at 6:00 p.m. We'll have our blue ribbons . . . be there or be square (guess that dates me)!

Sandy

Lynne Feb 27th, 2001 04:32 PM

I'll be there March 23-29, with 2 pre-teens in tow. I am seriously interested in ideas to keep us all amused, happy, warm and dry if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Patt Feb 27th, 2001 05:04 PM

Hi Sandy and other Paris travelers. I'll be with a travel agent friend in Paris March 7-12. I found a hotel through placestostay.com which is my first experience booking an international hotel through the web. Is everyone using websites to book int'l hotels? Just curious.

StCirq Feb 27th, 2001 06:04 PM

<< Chatres....nothing more than a tourist trap..>>

I'm sorry, but I have to raise a big red flag for this comment. Chartres is one of the grat wonders of the world, and anyone who dismisses it is missing out on some of the best Medeival history available to us. Malcolm Miller's tours are exceptional, but even if you can't avail yourself of one of these, if you can't go and stand in that nave and appreciate what went on so many hundreds of years ago to make it possible for you to see what you are seeing, you are a dunce and an ingrate.

Gene Wright Feb 27th, 2001 09:43 PM

StCirq, While the negative comment about Chartres caused me to raise an eyebrow and wonder what kind of bad experience the writer had (caught in the middle of a busload of noisy tourists or some equally awful or perhaps had OD'd on cathedrals at that point), I don't think she deserves or needs to be insulted. While I don't write much on the forum, my wife does, but I do read it fairly often and I am always amazed when I run across an intemperate, nasty or rude comment written by some poor insensitive and insecure soul. And no, you don't have to write back to fang me and tell me what an ass I am and how wonderful and secure you are. I know all that already, which I guess certainly makes me an ingrate.

Sandy Feb 28th, 2001 05:57 AM

Lynne,

Please join us on the 23rd!

Patt,

I don't usually make hotel reservations at all beforehand, I prefer to wing it but when I do ('cause I'm arriving at night or I know someplace I want to stay, etc.), then I have found booking on line a GREAT way to go. I most always get prompt and courteous replies and I've yet to be disappointed with my choices. Sorry you can't join us on the 23rd, will be lots 'o fun.

Sandy

Michelle Feb 28th, 2001 06:08 AM

Great to see so many will be in Paris in March. My husband and I will be there the 20th-23rd. I'm counting the minutes! Hope you all have wonderful trips and lots of stories to post when you return!

Ishoo Feb 28th, 2001 06:42 AM

My wife and I will be in Paris March 20-26. Would be interested in meeting those who have contributed to the forum. Please email me if you are interested.

Sandy Feb 28th, 2001 06:04 PM

Hey all you Fodorites . . . you don't need a formal invitation, do you? If you read this and will be in Paris on Fri, Mar 23, then meet us (we're up to about 11 people by now) at Cafe Francais, 3 place de la Bastille, 6:00 p.m. We'll have our blue ribbons plus an American flag on the table.

Hope to see you!
Sandy

topper Mar 1st, 2001 06:20 AM

Why not?

Madeleine Mar 1st, 2001 12:23 PM

Best bet is to just ignore StCirq. She prowls message boards all over the web so she can declare others whose experience and/or opinions are contrary to her own names like "dunce" and "ingrate" and, usually, much worse. Where does a supposed wife and mother of two who "runs a business" find so much time to bother others?

Sue Mar 2nd, 2001 02:05 PM

Any more takers for March 23 at Cafe Francais? The more the merrier.

Gina Mar 2nd, 2001 02:11 PM

Sounds like a great time--I'm afraid I'll miss the gathering by just a week! A friend and I will be arriving on March 31 and leaving April 7 (we lucked out on that great Icelandair two-for-one special). Will anyone be around the first week in April?

Ursula Mar 3rd, 2001 02:38 AM

Good website: www.parisavenue.fr. Also in English with inputs, what to dos and latest hot spots. I like to stroll through. Sponsored by daily newspaper "Le Figaro" so also valid for non-tourists. I would compare it a little to "nytoday.com" by NY Times. Have a look through. It's worth it.

Mary Mar 3rd, 2001 08:13 AM

I want to meet for drinks with you guys, too! You sound like so much fun, plus we could all enjoy a little intellectual conversation, too! Will be in Paris for a very short stay, (Mar 18th - 20th) and am planning to dine at Au Pied de Cochon (they have VERY late hrs). Any takers for late-night dinner/drinks/dessert?

Lonely Mar 5th, 2001 12:20 PM

Sounds like you are going to have a good time the evening of the 23rd. Wish I could be with y'all! Hoist un demi for me, please. Have fun!

janice Mar 5th, 2001 06:39 PM

My sister, mother, and I will be in Paris March 27-April 9. Any takers for a fodorite meeting during those two weeks? email me and we can set up a place

sandy Mar 8th, 2001 07:18 AM

OK, gang, we're getting down to the wire, some of us are just one short week away from our grand vacation in France.

I'm trying to get a count on who all is meeting us for drinks on Fri, Mar 23 at 6:00 p.m. at Cafe Francais, 3 pl de la Bastille. Sue is going to call CF and warn them that we're coming so we can get a big table.

You can email me, reply here, or just show up. I can hardly wait to see all of you.

We'll have on our blue ribbons and big grins.

Please come if you are in Paris then.

Sandy

Dana Mar 8th, 2001 07:47 AM

We'll be there!!!!

Can't wait!!!

See you soon.

Dana

So what are you folks who are going to Paris in the next week or 2 going to pack? Is it cool? cold? Do we need winter coats? Hats and gloves? Raincoats? Just sweaters? I can't get a handle on the packing - how to be "properly" dressed for the weather, the activities and the culture!
Sandy Mar 8th, 2001 09:14 AM

I'm taking a jacket w/zip-out fleece vest, a pr of silk longjohns (top/pants), turtleneck for layering, long-sleeve shirt, wool socks, two prs shoes (in case one pr gets wet), and of course . . . black pants. I think (hope) I will be dressed for any kind of weather. If not, I can always buy something and have a wonderful souvenir.

Sandy

Michelle Mar 8th, 2001 11:44 AM

The coutdown is on! One more week until we leave for London/Paris! Can't wait to meet our Fodor Friends on the 21st...wish we could be there for the big group gathering on the 23rd, but sadly we'll be on our way home!

As far as packing - taking clothing items in noir, sweater sets (for layering), rain gear, gloves, and of course some comfortable shoes! I have everything in one carry-on bag.

I'll be looking for those blue ribbons in London and Paris.

~Michelle

p.s. - I'm even listening to a Paris radio station as I type this (M-FM).
Georgio Mar 8th, 2001 11:50 AM

Hello Americans,

Welcome to Paris. But please do not bring your guns and/or your "uncivilised" gun-todding adolescents with you.

Bye-bye

GA
Paris

Nonplussed Mar 10th, 2001 05:48 AM

Good heavens, why would we bring gun toting adolescents? We travel in March because they are all home in school. Looking forward to the meeting in less than two weeks. Will be there will bells and ribbons on!

Take me to the top, Scotty....

Phil Bregman Mar 10th, 2001 06:40 AM

My "wife" (wow) and I will be on our honeymoon in Paris March 30th - April 7th. My wifes first time in Paris my third. Cant wait! Staying at George V, lucky us. Will review when back! Our friends are staying at the Franklin Roosevelt, will also review!

s.fowler Mar 10th, 2001 06:43 AM

I've emailed privately the people who are overlapping with us in Paris, but wanted to post here to catch anyone else who might have indicated an interest in getting together. Alas I think I'm going to have to take a "rain check". I am "shepherding" 6 other people, including 5 friends from Macedonia. It's their first trip to Paris, so my first responsibility is there. And because of the "balkan spirit" planning ahead is not an easy task:) I will be at Hotel La Motte Picquet So if you DO set a time and place feel free to leave me a message. I just can't promise to make it:(

Kelly Mar 11th, 2001 05:47 PM

I will be in Paris March 21-27th. It would be great to meet up on the 23rd. This is only my second time in Paris so I am not sure where this is you will be meeting. Can someone e-mail me directly with more specific information. I decided just a few days ago to make this trip and I'm having a hard time finding any rooms in a two star hotel....does anyone have any suggestions. I would appreciate any help.

Shawn Mar 11th, 2001 07:42 PM

Hello all Paris travelers-one restaurant recommendation I can make is for Le Petit Zinc in the St. Germain district. It was the only good meal I had the entire time I was there (yes, I'm picky). Reservations are hard to come by; maybe your hotel can help. One museum recommendation: the Musee Picasso-very interesting, educational and not nearly as tiring as the Louvre. One clothing recommendation: bring the gloves and scarf. My husband and I damn near froze to death last March until we bought some warmer clothes. Fashion before function only works when its above 40 degrees.

Sandy Mar 12th, 2001 06:24 AM

Kelly,

Glad you can make it! Cafe Francais is at 3 Place de la Bastille. There is a metro stop (Bastille) and I bet that CF will be very, very close. See you at 6:00 p. on Mar 23!

Sandy
