Paris budget hotel help for October trip

I'm thinking of a weekend in Paris October 20-23. Obviously that's very soon, and many places I've asked are already full. Based on recommendations here and availability, I'm down to a few hotels:

1) Porte Dorree - 54 Euros per night. Gets great reviews and a great price, however is a bit far out. I don't mind taking the metro through.

2) Hotel de France Invalides - 78 Euros. I like the location, although it's kind of in the middle of being close to lots of things without really being that close to anything in particular. Rate is a little more than I'd like.

3) Andrea Rivoli - 70 Euros. Good location. Rate is still a little more than I'd like.

4) St. Jacques - 55 Euros with WC/shower in the hall. Great location and good reviews, not sure about sharing the facilities though. I've e-mailed to ask how many other rooms it's shared with.

Thanks.

annhig Oct 1st, 2006 05:33 AM

Gosh -you are cutting it fine, especially with your budget. Have you tried "lastminute.com"? I would always pay extra to have own facilities, especially if you are by yourself, [you don't say] for security reasons.

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 05:47 AM

Thanks. Yes, I am alone, a male. There is something about private facilities that really appeals to me. I wouldn't care so much about the hotels in the 70 Euros, but with a few options in the 50s this is a bit of a difference, and would add up over three nights.

It turns out the bathrooms at St. Jacques are shared with 3 people. (I'm not sure if I count as one of those people, but anyway ...)

Hi,

Try the Hotel de Sevigné, rue Malher. Single rate on their website is 64 euros. I stayed there for a week a year or so ago and liked it a lot. It is right off rue Rivoli and near Place des Vosges and the Musée Carnavalet. It is a fun area in the Marais.
I also like the Welcome Hotel on rue de Seine. I was there in May of this year. It is around 73 euros but has a fantastic location. Both are very comfortable two star hotels with friendly staff. Welcome as no A/C but I didn't mind that. Am going to Paris again in May 2007 and may try La Louisiane, down the street from the Welcome Hotel.

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 06:59 AM

Thank you. Sevigne was one of my top choices, but already booked. I think I've e-mailed Welcome to ask for their availability, but I haven't heard back yet. I just sent a request to Louisiane; thanks, I hadn't heard of that.

Travelnut Oct 1st, 2006 07:08 AM

I don't know about the facilities, but <b>Hotel de Nesle</b> in the 6th has singles for 55-65&euro;.
http://www.hoteldenesleparis.com/

There is <b>Hotel Kensington</b> in the 7th that I've seen mentioned occasionally:
http://www.hotel-kensington.com/

In the 13th, edge with 5th:
Hotel Residence Gobelins
http://www.hotelgobelins.com/

I've seen (online)a couple of 1-2* in the 14th that might work for you:

Hotel Mistral
http://www.hotel-mistral-paris.com/

Hotel Agenor
http://www.agenor-paris-hotel.com/

Hotel Tipi
http://www.tipihotelparis.com/

Hotel de la Loire
http://www.hoteldelaloire-paris.com/

Most have some feedback on Tripadvisor; if not, try Venere.com

Randy Oct 1st, 2006 07:58 AM

You might try the Hotel Jean Bart near the Luxembourg Gardens. I stayed there a few years ago and they were 55 Euro for a double bed and private bath. There was an elevator and if I remember correctly the breakfast was included in the price. I don't think they have a web site and you will have to call. Hope you speak French, or you might get lucky and some will answer who speaks english. When I was there they did not take credit cards, had to pay in cash.

Hotel Jean Bart
9, rue Jean Bart

Two blocks west of Luxembourg Gardens

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 08:10 AM

Thanks. I'm ruling out Gobelines, as I've stayed there before and want something different. I also think I'll pass on Nesle as I'm a bit concerned about the eccentric host and bookings being dropped. I'll try the others you've suggested.

I have one more possibility: Tourisme Hotel in the 7th for 70 Euros.

I think I'll rule out France Invaldides as it's the most expensive.

JeanneB Oct 1st, 2006 08:42 AM

Have you tried Hotel de College de France (5th)?
http://www.hotel-collegedefrance.com/chambres-us.html

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 09:06 AM

Yes ... that was another of my top choices. It's booked.

Du Midi is offering a room for 61 Euros. Any thoughts on this? Only a couple of reviews on Tripadvisor, both good.

Christina Oct 1st, 2006 09:29 AM

There are probably several Hotel du Midi in Paris. Which one are you talking about? There is a 3* one right about at place Denfert Rocherau, and if you can get that for 61 euro, I'd take it. That is a good location with great transportation because of several metro lines and the RER right there, as well as buses, etc. And there are lots of cafes and places to eat around there. I knew that hotel was fairly cheap because it's not that wellknown and not in the very central tourist area, but I'm even surprised they have rooms during a peak hotel period for 61 euro. YOu are obviously very price sensitive and asking for a lot for that rate, during a period with few vacancies, so I'd take one I found acceptable (like that one). The Porte Doree wouldn't be bad, either, if you don't mind taking the metro.

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 09:53 AM

It's this one:

http://www.leshoteliersdeparis.com/L...l-du-Midi.html

Thanks for the help, Christina. Maybe I'm overobsessing about small differences in price. Obviously, 54 is lower than 70, so it's a question of am I okay with Portee Doree or is it worth it to go to 61 or 70. My thought is I'll probably be taking the metro anyway from wherever I go except for the areas right around the hotel, so it's not like I'd be avoid a ton of metro expenses for a closer hotel ... I'd probably buy a carnet anyway.

I guess I'm surprised that late October is peak season, but obviously it's making it harder for me but planning on such short notice. Thank God there are lots of hotels in Paris!

WillTravel Oct 1st, 2006 09:56 AM

111op is on his own trip right now, but he always recommends the Hotel Tiquetonne. Did you try that? It's at the low end of your range.

Travelnut Oct 1st, 2006 10:19 AM

Joe, Tripadvisor doesn't have feedback for Hotel du Midi in the 12th; I think you saw the profile for the one by Denfert Rochereau in the 14th. (I put in &quot;Midi&quot; and there was only one choice).

&quot;Your&quot; Hotel du Midi (12th) is pretty well-situated, though, by Daumnesnil/Ledru-Rollin. Interesting flea market at Place Aligre, and near the elevated Promenade Plantee.

bardo1 Oct 1st, 2006 10:40 AM

Joe,

Call this place (no internet or email):

Hotel de Chevreuse
3 rue de Chevreuse
75006 PARIS
Phone: +33 1 43 20 93 16
Fax: +33 1 43 21 43 72
RER B station: Port-Royal
Metro: Vavin (2 short blocks)

Three stories, no elevator, no AC but they speak English and the (small) rooms are VERY clean with new furnishings and have en suite bathrooms. Price could be anywhere from 50 - 75 Euro, depending o how full they are and how you negotiate.

Great location close to Metro, RER, restaurants, cafes and the Luxembourg garden - definately worth a phone call.

Mara Oct 1st, 2006 12:23 PM

I stayed at the Hotel Picard some years ago - it was not what I would call charming but it was clean and well located and had rooms with private facilites.
http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75003picard.htm

The website shows a room with private facilities for 56 Euro.

Olegis Oct 1st, 2006 12:40 PM

We stayed at the Maubeuge hotel back in 2003 - it's nice, clean and has very good location - 5 minutes walk from the Gare du Nord station, on a relatively quiet side street.

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 01:46 PM

Thanks for the tips. Is there a website for Tiquetone? I've thought of them but didn't find anything on-line.

Travelnut Oct 1st, 2006 02:24 PM

You need to call Tiquetonne - no website and I don't know how they are with email (or you could fax).
http://www.eurocheapo.com/paris/hote...iquetonne.html

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 02:43 PM

Wow ... what a great rate for the 1st eme! I've just e-mailed. I'll check out their tripadvisor comments.

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 02:58 PM

Hmm ... trip advisor comments are kind of mixed and negative. I guess that's why prices are so low for such a great location. Thanks for that tip though; I'll see if they have a place.

crepes_a_go_go Oct 1st, 2006 03:37 PM

I stayed here in May for 56&euro; for a single. Very nice, clean, extremely helpful staff who speak English. En suite bath, although tiny, it worked out fine.

No website, but they respond immediately to email or fax.

Hotel du Mont Blanc
28 Rue de la Huchette

E-mail: [email protected]

JoeTro Oct 1st, 2006 03:44 PM

Thanks ... looks like they do have a website, although they list 65 Euros.

http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75005montblanc.htm

I'll e-mail them to ask!

crepes_a_go_go Oct 1st, 2006 04:51 PM

Oh my, yes I see the price has gone up. Perhaps you can get it a bit cheaper by contacting them directly. Sometimes that works for me.

JoeTro Oct 2nd, 2006 08:08 AM

Unfortunately they are booked. I have a few other options I've learned of today that I'll e-mail for feedback.

JoeTro Oct 2nd, 2006 08:42 AM

Here are a few more choices that have openings:

Hotel de la Loire**
39 bis rue du moulin vert
75014 Paris

52 EUROS PRIVATE WC/SHOWER

HOTEL DE ROUEN
42 RUE CROIX DES PETITS CHAMPS
75001 PARIS

46 EUROS with shower, shared WC.

COSMOS HOTEL
35 Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud
75011 PARIS

43 EUROS with private shower/WC

Cosmos seems great for the price but there are no reviews. Any thoughts? I'm a bit worried about the Rouen as I've read several negative comments about cleanliness, although the price and location are great. I think with la Loire, I might be better off with the Porte Doree as both would require metro to get into the center and Doree is a known good entity from so many great reviews.

Thanks!

Christina Oct 2nd, 2006 10:09 AM

There was a thread on here not too long ago about a guy looking for a real cheap hotel for his son, and I think he ended up at the Cosmos and another place I suggested nearby. I believe he told us what his son thought of both places.

This is the thread
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34779198

YOu might also check out hotel Marys or the Mondia in that area, as well as the Cosmos and Nevers.

The Nevers is hard to get on its website, but I know it's in your price range (rooms start at 49 euro for a room with both WC and shower).
http://www.hotelsparisonline.com/hot...ers/tarifs.php

JoeTro Oct 2nd, 2006 10:39 AM

Thanks as always, Christina. The Cosmos seems great .... 7 very strong reviews on travel library (I didn't even know that site existed ... learn something new every day).

So can anyone tell me something about its location in the 11th? I'm not very familiar with that area. It seems to be a good spot for transportation with convenient connections on a number of lines, but is that part of town safe, especially at night? Too loud or crazy? Seems like it's pretty close to the 4th and obviously more closer to the center than Porte Doree in the 12th.

BTilke Oct 2nd, 2006 10:47 AM

Another option is the Hotel Ribera in the upscale Auteuil residential neighborhood in the 16th. Rates are right in your ball park. Basic but clean, nice staff, has a friendly cafe on-site. When we had an apartment in this area, my husband used to pop into the cafe from time to time.
http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75016ribera.htm

JoeTro Oct 2nd, 2006 10:52 AM

Is it too close to St. Denis? I've heard that's kind of shady.

BTilke Oct 2nd, 2006 10:54 AM

By the way, these recs may help you out a bit. I think they're slightly out of date, but still useful:
http://www.jack-travel.com/Paris/Par...get_Hotels.htm

The Ribera is one of the hotels recommended.

Christina Oct 2nd, 2006 11:09 AM

no, the Cosmos is in a good location near Oberkampf metro in the 11th. That's a great part of town for a young single guy. There are lots of places with a younger clientele around there (clubs, cafes, shops). I think you'd enjoy it more than being out near Porte Doree. It isn't even near rue St Denis, which is near Les Halles, or do you mean the suburb of St Denis? It's not even close to that, either, which is way on the top of Paris across another layer of arrondisements.

Christina Oct 2nd, 2006 11:11 AM

sorry, I realized you never said you were that young, just alone. Well, the Oberkampf area may not be as thrilling, but it's still a decent location and not very far from the Bastille area, or even the Marais.

JoeTro Oct 2nd, 2006 11:29 AM

Thanks. Yes, I'm young (23) but not that interested in the Paris nightlife in terms of clubs. I do like cafes, through ... the big concern is safety walking around the area, especially at night. I guess it seemed a little close to rue St. Denis, but maybe the map's scale just made it seem that way.

Christina Oct 2nd, 2006 11:41 AM

oh, the immediate area should be safe enough, with proper precautions (okay, it can be a little more questionable than some others, but it's not terrible). I've heard there can be some problems around the Republique metro late at night -- but I do like place Republique which has some good cafes around it and sometimes things going on in it. The Cosmos hotel isn't near rue St Denis at all (which I have walked down, but in broad day light -- it's just not a nice area very much). That is in the 2nd, and is probably about 1 km away at the top part. Actually, were you aware the Tiquetonne is only a block or so from rue St Denis?

I understand the not big on nightlife, but the area should be fine whatever you are looking for in that regard.

amandab Oct 2nd, 2006 12:12 PM

Hi, we are staying at the Hotel International (Republic area) in January - price 52 euros per night for a double room, including ensuite. Reviews seem to be quite good and most rooms have been redecorated. I found it on venere.com.

ita Oct 3rd, 2006 04:44 PM

I don't have the details which I am sure another poster can supply. There is a hotel in one of the hospitals that has sounded different. I recall that it is a good location.

DeborahAnn Oct 3rd, 2006 05:18 PM

Joe, If you haven't found a hotel yet. One I can recommend with some &quot;reservation&quot; is Le Home Latin. It's on rue Sommerard in the 5th. I love the location. The hotel is just ok, but it is pretty large and might have availability with a decent price. It's near Boul. St. Michel and Saint Germain with good metro service. A short walk to Notre Dame and many other sights. We stayed there in 2001. Deborah

DeborahAnn Oct 3rd, 2006 05:25 PM

Joe, sorry I just went online and Le Home Latin does not have availability. Good luck in your search. Deborah
